To think it's just weird that a pub restaurant is refusing to share costs or a sample menu?

Is it just me who thinks this is really bizarre?

New managers of a local pub, who despite being repeatedly asked for a menu, even a sample menu with an idea of costs, are refusing to share ANY information.

We visited there regularly when the previous managers had it, and we would like to go again.

But AIBU to want to see the kind or food they are serving & an idea of cost?

Would be interested to know what the food is like now, ate there a couple of years ago and wasn't hugely impressed despite reviews to the contrary....

MartinsSpareCalculator · 12/03/2024 21:44

You can see clearly that their Sunday roast starts from £19.99 so could fairly accurately gauge the cost of a 3 course menu.

I can't see "lots of people asking" either.

Rattenbury · 12/03/2024 21:44

A surprise menu wouldn't particularly put me off but the lack of idea on pricing is a bit off putting

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:47

@Rattenbury it used to be 'ok', under the previous owners, but then went downhill & closed.

We were excited to hear it was reopening, but now disappointed with their odd concept.

Might help business if they put an address & phone number on their FB page!

Oh no! This is anxiety-inducing for me. I am a vegetarian with allergies and strong dislikes. I would need to know what my food options are before going.

I can understand the gimmick (although not appealing to me) of not know what you’ll get to eat but the price missing is insane. I need to know how much it’s going to cost me before I commit because I’m not made of money!

Woofappreciationday · 12/03/2024 23:22

I live near .. shall i book and report back?

SpringtimeBunny · 13/03/2024 08:19

So basically they just feed you whatever crap they have at the back of their freezer?!

Containerhome · 13/03/2024 08:25

its an event. Not an every day thing and is a mystery menu. So yabu wanting a menu.

However.... prices should be available and shout be a set menu price. That wouldn't fly in my restaurants or my town. Yanbu wanting a price

I hope they ask for allergies etc before presenting the mystery dish!

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:34

@pontipinemum I think they have been open a few months, and never a menu.
I (and others) have responded to their posts asking for menus & pricing, and nothing.

If they have been open a few months they are doing better than many new food businesses so enough people must be going to make money.

I don't get the angst - if it's your kind of thing go, if it isn't don't.

Think you missed the point, it’s easy to
understand what they are doing, but very odd that the price aspect is a mystery, the fact everyone here appears to agree, would suggest it is indeed odd. Completely different to a vegan or steakhouse scenario you mention.

Yes, it’s a different scenario - but I think YOU’VE missed MY point. The OP seems to be taking the actions of a restaurant she is under zero obligation to visit weirdly personally. So it’s odd that they don’t mention their prices - so what? Just. Don’t. Go!!

Not going somewhere is incredibly easy. You literally just do nothing. I’m not going to this restaurant as we speak. I’m not going to any others either. And do you know what else I’m not doing? Banging the same drum over and over about how irritating it is that they don’t have their prices on display; that they refuse to share a sample menu. It’s a bizarre level of over-investment.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 13/03/2024 09:20

@HotChocolateNotCocoa are you new to the internet?; 😁
That's kind of what people do , especially on here - post a scenario and then it gets discussed
Or should it be "no pricing is weird" "ok I agree"
The End
lol

HotChocolateNotCocoa · 13/03/2024 09:24

I know, I know… but it’s the obsession! The refusal to get that somewhere that bases its entire concept on a mystery menu is not going to share sample menus!!

Aaaaand… breathe 😁

At the risk of saying it all again though lol -
Mystery menu, fine.
Mystery pricing - batshit.

Springisroundthecorner · 13/03/2024 10:04

Have you driven past and seen anyone in there? Could it be a front for money laundering?

Allthefoodandwine · 13/03/2024 10:13

@GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight

Exactly that!
Glad someone gets it!

No obsession on my part, I have way more interesting things to think about....
Just asking a question.

OhcantthInkofaname · 13/03/2024 18:02

It would keep me out.

pollymere · 13/03/2024 18:45

The answer is expensive and pretentious. I wouldn't eat anywhere that couldn't give me allergy information on food items - which is also a legal requirement! Imagine turning up to find you couldn't eat any of it!

FeetLikeFlippers · 13/03/2024 20:36

It sounds like a stupid gimmick for food snobs and/or rich tossers. Not for me so I wouldn’t care.

As an allergy sufferer myself, I'd stay away from a mystery tasting session and hope others with allergies would have the sense to as well!
It's surely for people who can eat absolutely anything and therefore don't mind what they get.

I'm glad someone else thinks the same as me.

I'd be interested in a mystery menu, just like I'd probably enjoy a tasting menu. I want to know what I'm paying though because I wouldn't want to book something that's outside of my budget, or end up booking something cheap that's likely to be rubbish and a gimmick.

Exactly, you need to have a rough ballpark figure price otherwise you run the risk of worrying you're going to have to pitch in with the washing up or do a runner 😂
Or end up with a piss take of a menu that probably cost a fiver but charged you silly money.

Londonrach1 · 13/03/2024 21:29

One place to avoid...not too far away. Price surely you don't know the price it could change depending on the person... I understand the menu mystery as long as allergies given to chef before but price needs to be given before. Not sure how this fit legally if you go into something not knowing the price...it could be £10-£1000 per dish...

You’re new here aren’t you!

The question about no pricing being odd was asked once (by the OP), not over and over. It then gets discussed. That’s how this platform works.

You need some peppermint tea I think.

BatShitCrazyGran · 13/03/2024 21:33

don't agree with any kind of price subterfuge. For a non-food related item, I don't understand why seemingly no taxi service in the UK publicises its charge per km or pricing schedule - or rather, why they're allowed to not do so.

The local licensing authority should be making it a requirement that each taxi has a tariff list in for customers to see. I was in the taxi business for 25yrs and our licensing authority does this. Every taxi, private hire/hackney has to have a tariff list in it.
