To think it's just weird that a pub restaurant is refusing to share costs or a sample menu?

Is it just me who thinks this is really bizarre?

New managers of a local pub, who despite being repeatedly asked for a menu, even a sample menu with an idea of costs, are refusing to share ANY information.

We visited there regularly when the previous managers had it, and we would like to go again.

But AIBU to want to see the kind or food they are serving & an idea of cost?

Well given that they are advertising it as a mystery menu, that's the whole point surely? Can't see one person on there that's asked for a menu or a price.

I don’t know how you can go without knowing a price, I get the curiosity menu bit.

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 12/03/2024 15:38

V weird for village pub too, I'd probably be looking for steak pie, a roast, decent burger etc, pub grub.

Sarvanga38 · 12/03/2024 15:38

No issues with a mystery menu for me, but no price guide is just ridiculous.

TinkerTiger · 12/03/2024 15:38

Well I'd expect that they take payment upfront, or they're putting themselves at risk of people walking out and then wasting money. I'm sure there'd be T&Cs somewhere, maybe when you make the booking.

YABU, you're being ridiculous. It's called the 'Menu of Curiosity' for a reason, they're trying to stoke up interest as part of a marketing campaign.

It won't be the Menu of Curiosity once you've blabbed it to half of Northampton!

But you’d still expect an idea of price, eg: 5 course opening curiosity menu- £39.99

That would be more acceptable.

Saymyname28 · 12/03/2024 15:41

I wouldn't expect a menu for an "event" like that. I've been to plenty of things where the whole point is that the menu is a secret. But I would expect a general price range or a set price.

Redglitter · 12/03/2024 15:32

But the ginmick is its a mystery menu. Showing a menu would totally defeat that.

It's strange for a restaurant under normal circumstances but it makes sense when you read how they're marketing it

It’s the no price bit that is the issue I think. Insane.

But it’s their USP! It might not appeal to some but they seem to be making a success out of it at the moment 🤷‍♀️

They have just opened, and were almost full for Mothering Sunday lunch. Hardly a benchmark.

idontlikealdi · 12/03/2024 15:44

The no price is bonkers.

wurlycurly · 12/03/2024 15:45

I thought by law, a restaurant had to display its prices outside?

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 15:46

@GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight
Exactly!
I have always been prepared to pay good money for decent food.
But they aren't prepared to divulge the costs, or an idea of costs?!

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 15:46

@wurlycurly interesting...

Mystery menu fine, and I’d be interested to try it, but no prices is so anxiety-inducing I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the food. Unless they do that “pay what you think it’s worth” thing. Even then though, not for me. Good for people without a budget I suppose.

purplehotdogs · 12/03/2024 15:47

Just look at the reviews on TripAdvisor, you can see what people ate, photos of the food, and some of them state the prices they paid. It all seems very typical of pub food, tbh, nothing special or interesting at all.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 15:48

@CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson
I'm the same, my standards are very different to the next persons..... so how do we know?!
And, we don't know the cost?!

Uricon2 · 12/03/2024 15:48

From the pictures the food doesn't look likely to be too experimental, but the lack of any kind of price guidance is just silly.

A very established place with regulars who know what is usual might get away with this but not under new ownership.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 12/03/2024 15:49

It's just a gimmick, and it seems to be working for them so good luck to them.

MobileStationery · 12/03/2024 15:49

It's a 'More Money Than Sense' type situation.

A reminder that there is no COL crisis, it's a wealth distribution problem.

loudbatperson · 12/03/2024 15:50

Not giving a menu preview is ok, if it is a "mystery" or blind set menu.

Not sharing the price is odd though, and I would think people may be put off.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 15:51

@purplehotdogs only 1 review so far this year on Tripadvisor

ancienticecream · 12/03/2024 15:51

I've always loved the idea of a restaurant where you eat whatever is served. However, having even a vague idea of costs involved is a good thing.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 15:53

@ancienticecream I have had many tasting menus, where you do not know what you will get.
But, the chef has a solid reputation, there are plenty of reviews & I have ALWAYS known the cost!

God, I hate the whole 'pay what you think it's worth' thing - had a place doing that for takeaway of restaurant quality food during Covid. Drove us mad working out what was 'not offensive, but not paying too much'.😂 Just give me a price, FFS LOL.

LutonBeds · 12/03/2024 15:55

Wouldn’t do for me. I’m one of those people who studies the menu days before I go anywhere 😁

ScarletILumination · 12/03/2024 15:55

You need a price estimate before you go. But considering that write up contains a few typos and is a bit immaturely written, I'm not sure I'd personally trust them to run a mystery menu professionally so would give it a wide berth - especially without a price estimate.
