To think it's just weird that a pub restaurant is refusing to share costs or a sample menu?

Is it just me who thinks this is really bizarre?

New managers of a local pub, who despite being repeatedly asked for a menu, even a sample menu with an idea of costs, are refusing to share ANY information.

We visited there regularly when the previous managers had it, and we would like to go again.

But AIBU to want to see the kind or food they are serving & an idea of cost?

The owners seem to be trying to recreate what Shannon Bennett was doing at Vue 15 years ago.

@Minymile no, it's a village in Northamptonshire

I checked the thread again properly and my question was not relevant anymore.

@notwavingbutdrowning1
Why? You don’t have to put your prices or menu online before hand. They just need to give out the menu with the prices on the night, before people order.

Trading Standards info, according to The Caterer: 'A menu must be clearly displayed at or near the entrance so that customers can look at it before they enter the eating area.'

So no, it's not acceptable just to hand out menus to customers once they're seated.

easilydistracted1 · 12/03/2024 19:54

@StrawberryJellyBelly I think this is probably probably a small village in possibly not the most progressive area of the midlands trying to do trendy without much of a reference base. I actually think the food is probably going to be a lot cheaper than people worry about which will make people happy in the local area. The food looks pleasant but very dated they even reference using the 70s as inspiration at one point and there is some deconstructed rhubarb dessert that appears to have a chunk of Easter egg chocolate on top. But we're all talking about it so maybe it did work after all

What happens if there’s nothing on the menu you like or can eat.
Being a veggie a bit of an issue as I can’t stand
blue cheese
goats cheese
mushroom stroganoff
All pub classics for a vegetarian

I don’t have any dietary needs but still dislike a lot of things, so I just wouldn’t try this? Not everything is for everyone.

I didn’t say once seated. I just said before they order. So yes, the menu needs to be available on the night. It doesn’t need to be on the door. Most places don’t have menus on the door. You go in, look at the menu and then you order or leave.

Stop looking for an issue when there isn’t one.

JacquiDaytona · 12/03/2024 20:04

I wouldn’t go purely for the bizarre use of apostrophes!
And absolutely agree, feels like an attempt at ‘high end’ without much knowledge of how to approach it.

DoAWheelie · 12/03/2024 20:23

If you don't like it then just don't go. They have their own unique twist and plenty of people who are up for it.

You are simply not their target market and they don't need to change to suit you.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/03/2024 20:48

Well it's a finish which doesn't work if they tell you the answers. Competitively priced so I'd sooner miss range for that type of menu, which you can guess by the photos. Items will be individually priced on the night so it's not like you'll order a small fries and pay £300. I wouldn't go with the mugs or fussy DH but would with a group of easy to feed friends

Tattletwat · 12/03/2024 21:07

Sounds like wanky pretentious crap to me, sounds like something from the film the Menu

But it wouldn't be my cup of tea so it's not aimed at me.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:11

@Tattletwat that film was horrendous!!!!!!

This is a bonkers way to do business.

IMO they won't stay in business long.

I just couldn’t be arsed with it

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:22

@Otterspoolpromenading I genuinely hope they do well, I just do not understand the 'mystery', it's irritating!

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:25

@FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren I have done this many times, and have loved it.
But like you, I have always known the price & have seen a wine list.

OP posts:
pontipinemum · 12/03/2024 21:30

Is it just a one off event? Or well maybe every so often event? But normally they will have a menu with prices?

I wouldn't go to it, firstly I probably wouldn't eat half of it! Secondly I wouldn't be comfortable at all not having a clue on the price. But I can see how at least the first part could appeal to people.

In a small village though if that's all they offer I don't see it lasting too long

VictoriaPink · 12/03/2024 21:31

That would utterly piss me off and I just wouldn't go.

Sorry, you're not special enough for me to go without any idea of pricing or food. Nowhere is that special, but certainly not a random village pub.

MumblesParty · 12/03/2024 21:32

I’d happily go, as long as I could have a bit of mystery myself too, and not tell them whether I’d be paying the full bill or not!

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:34

@pontipinemum I think they have been open a few months, and never a menu.
I (and others) have responded to their posts asking for menus & pricing, and nothing.

OP posts:
Baghera · 12/03/2024 21:34

Don't go then. You will soon see if they get enough people to play their game.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:36

@VictoriaPink I applaud local business owners, especially lately, but just let us know your pricing & a bleeding menu! Even a sample menu would do.

Not sure what they are 'trying' to achieve!

OP posts:
Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 21:36

@MumblesParty brilliant!!!! Might try that!

Hi, @Itslegitimatesalvage, the advice I quoted said 'A menu must be clearly displayed at or near the entrance so that customers can look at it before they enter the eating area.' I didn't even mention the door.

It really doesn't seem worth getting het up about

Snowflakeslayer · 12/03/2024 21:42

HotChocolateNotCocoa · 12/03/2024 19:19

I can’t say this gimmick would be for me either. But that’s exactly what it is - a gimmick. Some people will love the idea; others will think it’s daft. Either way, it’s all pretty simple - go if you like the idea, don’t if you don’t. You seem oddly affronted/bewildered that a business would introduce a concept that doesn’t appeal to you personally. On that basis, no one would ever open a steakhouse because vegetarians won’t want to go.

Maybe it will become a cult hit with a waiting list of months. Maybe it will be an utter flop and fold within weeks. Either way, it doesn’t affect you, does it? So let them crack on. The most likely outcome is that it will be a novelty for a while and then, once everyone who really likes the idea has been once or twice, business will tail off and the mystery menus will become a weekly or monthly thing instead of their only option.

Think you missed the point, it’s easy to
understand what they are doing, but very odd that the price aspect is a mystery, the fact everyone here appears to agree, would suggest it is indeed odd. Completely different to a vegan or steakhouse scenario you mention.
