To think it's just weird that a pub restaurant is refusing to share costs or a sample menu?

Is it just me who thinks this is really bizarre?

New managers of a local pub, who despite being repeatedly asked for a menu, even a sample menu with an idea of costs, are refusing to share ANY information.

We visited there regularly when the previous managers had it, and we would like to go again.

But AIBU to want to see the kind or food they are serving & an idea of cost?

I need some idea of price
I don't mind not knowing the menu

Nots456 · 12/03/2024 16:02

I can only think it would appeal to wealthy alpha males who want to show off to their friends/family that money is no object. The whole thing smacks of privilege tbh.

TinkerTiger · 12/03/2024 16:05

I've had a look at their regular menu on their website. Prices look fine so I'd be expecting to pay up to the cost of the most expensive items for each course.

trampoline123 · 12/03/2024 16:06

It's clearly an event and is explained well in their post...don't really see why you're querying it.

However, I love a menu and will always look in advance of going anywhere and usually book a place on their menu.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 16:07

@TinkerTiger that is the previous owners menu!!!!
Not the current owners

You’re being a bit ridiculous, OP. It’s the whole point. Just don’t go.

Sparklfairy · 12/03/2024 16:09

I quite like the mystery food aspect. It would give me an opportunity to maybe try things I hadn't before.

For them to give absolutely no idea of price though... That's a mistake. Even if you knew the restaurant and their ballpark prices normally/previously, there's absolutely nothing to say it won't be way more than that. This would put me off. I'm not eating random food with no idea of the price.

Why not just say 'Mystery Menu £xxx'. I think that's a great marketing campaign. But 'Mystery Menu with a blank cheque for your bank account'? No thanks.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 16:09

@Nots456
Unfortunately yes it does.

So they haven't updated the website? The Menu of Curiosity is only one type of menu that they do, surely if you want to go for dinner on a Wednesday evening you just have whatever the normal menu is?

Lord. I'm coeliac. DH is vegetarian and Ds1 has a peanut allergy.

We are not THAT unusual in the scheme of things. People like us- or even entire parties with people like us within them would steer clear.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 16:12

@TinkerTiger there is no normal menu, there is no menu at all... for anything... that's my point... nothing to compare against...
Just the mystery 🙄

TinkerTiger · 12/03/2024 16:12

@Allthefoodandwine have you actually rung them asking about their normal menus? The website still allows you to make a booking, so I I'd take it as the current website and menus

Hadalifeonce · 12/03/2024 16:13

I would be happy to have a mystery menu, but I would like to know the price range I am expected to pay for it.

Allthefoodandwine · 12/03/2024 16:14

@TinkerTiger there is no current website.

The wording of this part of their post suggests otherwise.

The Menu of Curiosity is described as an event, so it's not the norm every night.

Have you rung them? Or is this some weird marketing ploy to get interest?

@Sparklfairy my thoughts exactly!

@TinkerTiger definitely not a marketing ploy on my part! Just want prices & an idea of a menu.

Have. You. Rung. Them.

WatchandWaitorNot · 12/03/2024 16:23

They lost me at “the food our Chef’s have prepared”.

We went to Dines Le Noir, in London, and had no idea what we were going to eat. Couldn’t even see it in fact! The only difference was we knew the price beforehand. I’d probably try something like this as I know how fun Dines Le Noir was 😋 😋

zingally · 12/03/2024 16:28

It's a gimmick being aimed at a certain demographic of posers.

Shrug and go elsewhere.

Ok so you haven’t repeatedly asked them for a menu then.

I wouldn’t expect to know the menu for the curiosity event, but I’d expect to be able to see their main menu with price list in order to gauge whether I’d like to try the secret one.

The Chef's have prepared some starter's. Sound's tasty.
