I don't meal like bugs, heights, death ... I mean something strange.. unconventional.. something that might need a bit of explanation.

I'll go first -

Water towers ... the thought of them makes me shudder.

Mould on food. If I see it,immediate panic attack

Poundshop · 11/03/2024 10:02

Dog poo. Cat poo.

LadyAsnowt · 11/03/2024 10:02

Slugs.
Especially the big ones. I found one in my fridge once. That was a difficult day.

Me too @Keepingongoing . I trod on one in the kitchen in socks one night (I had socks on, not the slug). I feel your horror.

pootlin · 11/03/2024 10:06

I have trypophobia, which must be common, but it’s horrible.

The thought of crumbs dust down the side or back of public seats, especially train seats. I can't lean back on a train journey. I perch on the front of the seat.

I think crumbs are the least of your worries!!

brian cox
hair in drains
people with waist length or longer hair
wooden ice cream spoons
men with long finger nails

I'm astounded that others have a phobia of certain people.

I've never met anyone else who has a phobia of a person before.

Glad to see it's relatively normal.

bwage · 11/03/2024 10:22

Things shaped like sharks - planes, the hulls of large ships. I can look at pictures of them, I can travel in them, I just can't stand alongside them without my heart racing

KrushedIvy · 11/03/2024 10:26

Rivers . I always think they are treacherous. Deceiving. They can look so calm and inviting just paddle in the shallows and then bang ❗️ you're gone , pulled under by the current . I don't even like looking at them.

@BeretRaspberry my nan has this about getting her blood pressure taken. She's had it since she was young. She calls it white coat syndrome... I think it is a thing.

White coat syndrome is usually when it’s taken in the doctor’s but ok at home, I think. I’m the same anywhere!

My husband checks his periodically at home as he’s on meds and as soon as the monitor comes out of the cupboard I can start with anxiety and sometimes panic. It’s baffling and awful, especially as it seemed to come out of nowhere.

Rainydayinlondon · 11/03/2024 10:44

Mine is people who have a “frog” in their throat and not clearing it and continue to speak in a squeaky voice so I can imagine the catarrh impeding their voicebox 🤢

foodglorious · 11/03/2024 10:51

You know the really really soft velvety type fleece material.

I cant touch it, it makes me loose my breath, really odd feeling and have never known anyone to have it

If i accidentally touch it need to rub my hands on something rough to get the feeling away and i cant breath, so bloody odd!!

Trypophobia is mine, but it think its a common one. Its a fear or aversion to small holes, clusters or bumps. 😫 Just typing that made me cringe.

Me too. And how many people are obsessed with aversion therapy to try to overcome it???? I just can’t!

The Sanex advert triggered me, panning under someone’s arm to all those people. Has a visceral reaction. I feel nauseous and ill.

The bits in the bottom of the washing up bowl

Me too. Fortunately, we have a dishwasher and my husband deals with any washing up that has to be done in the sink.

Unfortunately, my "phobia" extends to any bits of food where they shouldn't be.

I avoid stacking dirty plates, because I hate finding bits of food stuck on the underside. I have to move quickly when guests attempt to be "helpful" by stacking plates with leftover food on top of each other... 🤢🤢🤮

MrsAvocet · 11/03/2024 13:18

Mugs with black interiors. I find it really difficult to drink from them. I don't like coloured insides in general but I can tolerate paler or brighter colours just about. But if someone gives me a cup of tea in a black mug I will physically struggle to drink it, and I love tea!
Actually, come to think of it I feel similarly about coloured crockery in general, but mugs are the worst. In an ideal world for me all crockery would be white and virtually no food would be.

People in animal costumes.

Yes!! This! Especially monkey or gorilla ones.

peachescariad · 11/03/2024 13:21

Morris dancers

ConsumedByCake · 11/03/2024 13:25

The little oval stickers on fruit. I'm going cold just thinking about them. I worked with someone who used to peel them off and stick them around her PC monitor. I couldn't go near her desk.

Also - bananas give me the shivers. I can't bear to touch them. And I'm horrified by fruit that's showing any sign of discoloration or decay, and by fruit detritus - apple cores, banana skins and so on.

Wind turbines.
Creepy bastards.

I hate wind turbines too. They make me think of War of the Worlds.
And I hate seeing film of oil refineries , there's not a living soul to be seen
I also hate ATS tyre place and cardigans that fasten up to the neck..
I'm really weird aren't i

LightSpeeds · 11/03/2024 13:50

WhimsicalMoth · 11/03/2024 09:54

@LightSpeeds when you stood under the wind turbine... did it make a noise ??? I think that would make it more scary for me. I'm thinking of a particular type of noise that would just make me want to die. Enlighten me

It was a long time ago but I remember that when I stood under it, my whole body and head started to feel REALLY weird. It was very unpleasant and frightening. I got my boyfriend to get out of the car too to give it a try. He felt it too.

Would love to try that again 😂 (it took us ages to find the turbine base as we were driving around).

1offnamechange · 11/03/2024 13:55

Flowers. And a lot of plants. Apart from trees, they are fine.
Used to be any flowers but I can deal with very small ones now.

Anything bigger than say a daisy I still wouldn't like to touch but can at least walk past say a bouquet of roses now without flinching.

but proper huge flowers like sunflowers/big tropical things....no way can't go within feet of them.

People think its an odd fear but there have been a surprising amount of films and TV shows about deadly plants so there must be others with it too!

DoYouSmokePaul · 11/03/2024 13:56

The Kelpies!!! I get a full body shudder if I’m unfortunate enough to spot them whilst driving towards Stirling.

I was about to Google them just now to post a photo but I actually was too scared to. The thought of them even gives me the absolute heebie jeebies. Horrible things.

Tarkan · 11/03/2024 13:58

Yes to whoever said clicking fingers.

There have been a few things on TV where they click fingers instead of clapping and it freaks me out.

MoisturiseYourMoose · 11/03/2024 14:02

Not a phobia per se but Macy Gray’s voice makes me want to vomit. It’s very strange and has been going on since I was teenager!
