Posters you still think about

Proof I probably spend too much time on here but does anyone else have posters they still think about every now and again?

Mine is the Australian poster whose son was in the abusive relationship and her many threads about helping him get out of the relationship and realizing she was toxic.

Can’t find the threads at all now but I hope her and her son are still doing well!

Does anyone else have stand out posters or threads that stick in their minds?

The night bus Oddsocks was a homeless sex worker. Went to MN meetups. Stayed on a Mumsnetter's sofa and had to be encouraged to leave after outstaying her welcome.

I don't think all the sympathy and support on MN was actually helpful to her., she seemed to often respond to it by escalating and posting more and more worrying things.

I remember one thread where another poster in a similarly difficult set of circumstances was receiving help and Oddsocks came onto the thread saying how she was walking in the road and getting into a vehicle with a random man before disappearing again. Felt like she wanted the attention diverted back to her, good or bad.

She obviously needed more help than MN could offer, I hope she got it.

SilverDoe · 10/03/2024 20:54

The thread is 16 pages in by the time I've seen it so apologies if it's already been mentioned and my description is off, but I remember a poster whose username was something like SeaOfDespair, who said her little girls had been taken away from her by social services.

She seemed genuinely heartbroken and desperate to get them back, but also seemed evasive which was really counterproductive to her own thread as people really seemed to be trying to help her avoid getting them removed permanently.

Her circumstances seemed to keep changing when users speculated on what the actual issue may be.

It's so so sad. I have somebody in my life (relative) in a situation where they are struggling to parent their children and the tumultuous mix of emotions involved for even me on the side lines is terrible, so to imagine being a parent in that situation, it's just harrowing.

I do so hope she managed to sort things out, and if sadly not, I really hope her DC are okay and in the best place.

The one whose daughter was in ICU and she posted the wrong name at one point (Claire vs Clara). The thread was deleted and reinstated a few times before being deleted for good. Most likely someone with Munchhausen by Internet but it was one of the more believable long-running hospital sagas on MN.

And the thread from a few years ago who had a bizarre houseguest who refused to leave her room. Apparently they were only friends with the husband and didn't know the wife at all who hid in her room the entire stay. Also binned food that the host gave her. There never seemed to be a conclusion to the story as the guests presumably left. Would love to have know why she never left the room!

The one who's daughter died? She wasn't real??

NotGoingToLie · 10/03/2024 20:59

Oh so many memories.

MrsKoala - utterly chaotic life with a useless DH and feral children

Bonsoir - nasty piece of work who felt superior to the rest of us because she lived in Paris

Ghost spirit - god help her

All the airheads on the long gone MN Vogue threads

Want2bsupermum - high flyer with impossibly high standards who lived in NY

But I mostly remember the decent women who were in despair: as someone mentioned above the poor lady whose husband had that hideous fish tank in their sitting room, there was another woman whose husband threw away her much loved childhood books and did not care, and then the lovely poster who was so isolated in NZ. I hope all these women are in a better place now.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 10/03/2024 20:59

There was one about someone who was convinced someone was getting into her outhouse to use her washing machine, can't remember the outcome.

Often think of Clares mum, so sad, and so sad so many people tried to pick holes and didn't believe her.

I had wondered where Bluntness had gone, rarely agreed with her though.

GreenYoshi12 · 10/03/2024 20:59

not the point of the thread but I never actually think any of you actually remember anyone on these threads - it’s like when people say ‘oh I’m thinking of you OP’ or ‘you’ll be in my prayers OP’ - I always think bullshit

Normallyfine · 10/03/2024 21:00

Gosh the post that I still remember was the lady who married a New Zealander, moved there, had a child and was basically stuck in NZ with no friends or support. There were a few updates but not sure what she ended up doing. I still think of her and hope she’s well

GlitchStitch · 10/03/2024 21:00

I always wonder about the step children of one poster. They slept on the landing in a bit of an alcove.

Yeah I remember her well. She even posted a photo of where one of the stepdaughters slept and it was literally a tiny cupboard. IIRC she had 2 very young sons and the eldest wasn't her partners but he was expected to be treated as such showing her double standards.

Her partner was a really shit Dad and one of the stepdaughters had a brain injury which varied in seriousness depending on her argument.

HuntingoftheSnark · 10/03/2024 21:00

Despite Bluntness once calling me "disingenuous", I quite often agreed with what she was saying in principle.

HelenaDove - haven't seen her for a long time.

JesusInACabbageVan - I think they wrote that brilliant summary of MN fighting over a charity shop purchase, referencing a thread at the time.

The thread about seasonal duvets.

And the one about hooting like an owl (can't recall either user name).

Hedjwitch · 10/03/2024 21:02

Cat Thief Keith. The funniest poster ever. Sadly passed far too soon.

Arborea · 10/03/2024 21:03

I remember an extremely funny poster called DorisDingleberry or Dangleberry or something similar. She seems to have name changed then vanished/had all posts even mentioning her deleted. I loved your work Doris 😫

RosesAndHellebores · 10/03/2024 21:03

Oh so many spring to mind and I often wonder is they are here with different names.

May I add Fru to the list of those we have loved and lost please.

GetOrfMoiLand - I think hers was the first post I ever read on here and I still remember her stories of kicking tins of Pal round the local co-op as an after school activity. I hope she's well.

ComposHat
Portofino
Fabby Chick (or was it Chic)
MrsDeVere
FrankWhippery and other iterations
LeQueen - never ever nasty about other posters or rude to people
Riven
ZukieCat
Mrs Morton (the dentist)
TheAmazingBouncingFerret
Quintessential
MaryZ

The site has changed a great deal and I don't know what to make of it too often now.

Marlena1 · 10/03/2024 21:04

When I first started reading MN (2017?) there was a poster called something like Ruby127. She was pregnant by a guy who didn't wash. A while later she started a new thread. She had terminated the previous pregnancy and was pregnant again by same guy. I always wondered how it turned out.
There was a lady in a really controlling relationship where he had bought her a flash car (that she didn't want). She had to be close to him at all times.

TattiePants · 10/03/2024 21:04

I remember a child falling out of an (upstairs?) open window. It was a large chaotic family where the children didn’t sleep, would that have been MrsKoala?

Yes, I agree.
I think I remember that thread.

Raccaccoonie · 10/03/2024 21:06

A poster whose mum(?) had died but her brother had faked an update to the will. She spent so much money contesting it and he got away with it in the end by producing a suspicious eyewitness. He had convictions for fraud as well. Just really sad as it spanned years of unpleasantness and wasn't worth it for the OP.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/03/2024 21:07

The lovely lovely IAmTheZombie took the time to tell me to get myself off to book my mammogram - yes it's not the best way to spend 20 minutes but get on and do it )

When I posted back thank you , and thankfully everything was fine , she again took time to say Good result , now don't miss any in future kind of thing .
She gave lots of good advice and encouragement while she was so unwell herself .

KaitlynFairchild · 10/03/2024 18:26

The American lady (I cannot remember or find her username) on the Feminism threads, who was living rough. I haven't seen an update in a long time and hope she is okay.

She always had "Detroit" in her username, taken from the Joni Mitchell song.

The last time I saw Richard was Detroit in 68.

I wasn't convinced it was real.

BIossomtoes · 10/03/2024 21:08

Anyone else miss BertrandRussell? I miss her on political threads. We argued for ages once about whether a Tiger Lily costume was cultural appropriation!

HelenaDove posts under a different name now, but very easy to spot. Just look out for the subject she talks about a lot. (even on threads about something completely different)

Sleeposaurus · 10/03/2024 21:09

I often think of a woman around 10/11 years ago who posted about her children. Her eldest had cystic fibrosis and was dying from it meanwhile her two younger sons (twins) had shown no real signs of it (and weren't diagnosed by the heal prick test). One had asthma they thought, but turned out he had a more unusual gene mutation for cystic fibrosis and then his twin had it too. They hoped that treatments would become available so they wouldn't get as unwell as their older sister. I wonder now that some of those treatment are available how things are going for her family.

Oh the daughter had a VP shunt didn't she! And the dad had a bizarre coke (fizzy drink) habit.

SecondHandFurniture · 10/03/2024 21:10

GreenBeret. Spent years ranting about "The X" and how she'd been shafted in court. In Sept 2019 she was kicking her twins out to uni and moving to a tiny cottage in Wales. Probably didn't anticipate lockdown...

Claire was real. I already said this on the thread but her poor mum ended up posting the death certificate because of people constantly not believing her and the last time I saw her posting she put it up again because of people still saying it was fake when it wasn't. I know it hurts her when she's on here and sees people still spouting this shit.

No, I don't know her, but I'm local enough that when I was looking for a friend's death notice in the paper, I saw Claire's. With enough detail that I could have gone along to the funeral to pay respects (but I thought that would have been weird for Claire's mum). A family member of theirs has posted on this thread too.

EdithStourton · 10/03/2024 21:13

Wasn't it CatThiefKeith who once started a thread about a school cake sale. The whole thing was completely bonkers, and escalated rapidly.

I miss the knowledgeable posters booted because of their comments on the feminism boards.

I had a run-in or two with BertrandRussell, several name changes ago.
