Car blocking crossing and hand signal telling me to go

I'm walking to the Drs minding my own business with my baby in his bassinet.

A car wants to turn direction so drives into a side street to do it. The side street is a dead end and like all drivers they want to turn their car at the entrance to the road.

I stop a couple of metres from the crossing as the car starts to reverse into the pavement and goes up it a little bit. I'm unsure if the driver sees me.

The passenger winds down their window and hand signals to me to pass.... When they've blocked the dropped curb as well as are making my journey harder.... basically the car bonnet was facing the pram and the direction of the pavement. I don't see why a pedestrian should be inconvenienced by a car, especially with a bassinet.

Aibu for not following the orders/direction of the car driver?

Sorry If it doesn't make sense

We're going to need a diagram. That's the rule around these parts.

Fooksticks · 09/03/2024 02:39

Of course not. If it didn't feel safe to you, stay where it does.

MinnieMountain · 09/03/2024 06:24

Another child got run over after a driver had signalled to her that it was safe when I was at school. I always make my own decision.

rwalker · 09/03/2024 06:31

I really couldn’t get excited by this
there were limited dropped kerbs when our kids were in pram always managed to cross the rd anywhere without them

pootlin · 09/03/2024 06:43

I don’r really get it but YANBU to trust your own judgement and ignore the beckoning hand.

My driving instructor always said never signal to cars or people that they can go, just wait.

HotChocWine · 09/03/2024 06:51

Bassinet?

Don’t you ever flash to Indicate another car can go? That’s totally standard and irritating if you don’t. The other car doesn’t have to go if it’s not safe. Your driving instructor may be technically correct but it’s de facto not normal.

OP I also don’t get what you are saying but sounds like YANBU!

Piggletta · 09/03/2024 07:07

Maybe they thought they were being helpful by letting you go first?

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 09/03/2024 07:13

I can’t picture it but no you are correct.
Always use your own judgement.
I regularly cross a busy road with 2 lanes of traffic. There are several crossings for the various roads this leads on to.
I always wait for the green man before crossing.
Sometimes a driver will stop whilst it’s on red man and wave me across, I never cross. Reason being I can’t see the other lane and more often than not another vehicle comes zooming along and drives over the crossing.

Mummame222 · 09/03/2024 07:17

Why did you not want to go? Was the driver not saying ‘just go so you don’t have to wait for me’?

I don't flash other drivers, for the reason the OP gave. There is a reason driving instructors tell their pupils this: it is not always clear what the 'flashing' driver means. There have been times when the other driver has flashed as a warning rather than permission and I have had near misses which are hairy to say the least! I will try to make eye contact and nod or some such thing but not flash.

Car was in that position, blocking my path and I needed to go around him..

He was blocking my path. Why should I have to go around a driver who decides to pull into a pedestrian walkway and I take extra time and effort to go around a car who has already reversed up the pavement and quite possibly didn't see me.

I really don't get why you didn't just go round him. It was a small detour, not a trek across the alps.

If the driver was as bad as you imply, surely you'd want to get well out of his way?

Strugglingtodomybest · 09/03/2024 09:22

I'm confused. What's the actual problem? Either you walk around the car or you don't? It really doesn't matter. I can't believe you're making such a big deal out of nothing.

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 09:26

Because why should I move around a car that's blocking dropped curbs and I have to put myself in further danger either going in front of behind the car?

The car could literally just move....

OP posts:
TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 09:28

And yes not all pavements have dropped curbs but there are some here and I don't see why a vehicle that can move without an effort of the driver, shouldnt move. Why should humans have to move around a car that is blocking their path?

No way will I ever drive into oncoming traffic based on the risk assessment and visibility of a random stranger. If I can't see for myself that the way is clear then you can flash your lights as much as you want but I'm not moving.

Because you can make it clear with your positioning / speed if you are letting someone out. No need to flash anyone.

I rarely use my flash unless as a warning e.g round the bend there is a broken down car etc… if your driving is clear then it isn’t needed.

😂 extra time and effort. Ffs.

You sound like hard work to be honest. You've taken longer moaning about it than it would to walk round it.

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 09:34

See the replies clearly show no concern for pedestrians or those with less mobility.

What world do people think it's ok for a car to block a pedestrians path and a pedestrian has to walk around the car.

Normal people would think the onus is on the car driver to not block paths and to drive considertatly.

Instead it's ok for passengers to hand gesture for mother and prams to go into the road traffic instead of the car not blocking dropped curbs.

Next time you have no facilities for women or children, remember that this car was blocking the dropped curbs and you thought it was ok for the pram to not be allowed to use the dropped curbs because cars.

Weird

@Catapultaway ah the good old "hard work" argument. And you wonder why women aren't respected
