Car blocking crossing and hand signal telling me to go

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 00:55

I'm walking to the Drs minding my own business with my baby in his bassinet.

A car wants to turn direction so drives into a side street to do it. The side street is a dead end and like all drivers they want to turn their car at the entrance to the road.

I stop a couple of metres from the crossing as the car starts to reverse into the pavement and goes up it a little bit. I'm unsure if the driver sees me.

The passenger winds down their window and hand signals to me to pass.... When they've blocked the dropped curb as well as are making my journey harder.... basically the car bonnet was facing the pram and the direction of the pavement. I don't see why a pedestrian should be inconvenienced by a car, especially with a bassinet.

Aibu for not following the orders/direction of the car driver?

It's, "kerb".

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 09:37

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain no way I'm driving based on others flashing.

The car was wrong I agree, but I wouldn't have got upset about I would have just walked a few paces down the side street and crossed further down. There were far fewer dropped curbs when DD was small so always had to bump the pram up and down.

Ah. This clears up everything about your OP.

Sausageplusmash · 09/03/2024 09:42

The car shouldn't have done it but I'd have walked around it tbh

SoupDragon · 09/03/2024 09:43

to go into the road traffic

It was a dead end. You would have been no more in the traffic than when crossing the road.

all it needed was a pointed eye roll and head shake at the driver as you walked round.

@Catapultaway ah the good old "hard work" argument. And you wonder why women aren't respected

😂 where did I say you sounding like you are hard work in any way related to you being a woman.
Just another example of you being hard work 😂

ColleenDonaghy · 09/03/2024 09:47

The car wasn't blocking your route was it though? Just like moving traffic isn't. It was completing a manoeuvre. I would have either waited for them to finish or just gone behind them if I didn't feel safe to cross in front.

@HotChocWine bassinet = carrycot = lie flat pram for a little baby.

I was waiting for him to finish and get out of my way... Instead they decided to tell me to go and wouldn't move until I walked in front of their car and into the other lane of traffic.

Edited

When I was busy making sure he wasn't going to drive into me (already mounted the curb in my direction) as well as check the other line of traffic and get back on the curb...

Or the driver could just move out the way

ColleenDonaghy · 09/03/2024 09:50

Ok, in future if you don't feel like going, step back from the corner and pretend to be busy on your phone.

They were just trying to help that's all. It's ok if you didn't want the help but it's not a big deal.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 09/03/2024 09:51

Is this a reverse? If not, you were not being unreasonable to rely on your own judgement. I've been signalled to cross sometimes while the driver is clearly oblivious to another car coming in the opposite direction!

Picklestop · 09/03/2024 09:52

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 09:26

Because why should I move around a car that's blocking dropped curbs and I have to put myself in further danger either going in front of behind the car?

The car could literally just move....

Don’t be so bloody ridiculous. You were not in any danger. Non issue of the day.

Helping in what way... Blocking the dropped curbs, blocking the safer way for me to cross the road, and instead I'm forced to changed my direction and enter into a new road because this car did a u turn?

I had no option. The driver wouldn't move their car despite me waiting for him to move. So I had to not use the dropped kurbs and go into the other road.... All because a car wouldn't move out of the way.

Have you actually seen the picture? The car was blocking my route and I had to go around the car.... I wasn't able to use the dropped curbs, I had to go around the car .. and why.

He shouldn't have made life difficult for you, but once he had, you need to consider the best and safest way for everyone to get out of the situation, not just stand your ground.

It looks from your picture as if he couldn't complete his turn without backing up further, so he needed the space you were standing in. Maybe he shouldn't have got into that position, but once he had, it makes sense for you to move first.

I think it's common and understandable for pedestrians not to see things from a driver's perspective and sometimes the driver has to ask the pedestrian to move. I live on a street that has a lot of pedestrian traffic. I stop for pedestrians as I'm pulling out of my drive, but often they then just stand there blocking my view of the road, I don't think they realise they're doing this, so I wave them on, otherwise we'd be there all day.

Oh god you're really overthinking this. They realised you wanted to cross the road so they were letting you go first. If they don't regularly push a pram or wheelchair they won't have copped about the dropped kerb (although it's a nice to have rather than a necessity for most pushing a buggy). They were trying to do a nice thing. If you don't think it was actually helpful, fine, there's every chance I wouldn't have done as they said either, but you're really really overthinking something that was intended to be helpful. We all get it wrong sometimes.

Going a little way down the cul de sac to cross behind them is hardly changing direction or having to enter a new road.

None of this matters in the slightest.

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 09:56

@Catapultaway you wouldn't dare say to my face "you sound like hard work" it's only on mums money, a site for mums or females at the very least. Men never come out with such phrases and no wonder they are easier to deal with.

No you misunderstand. The car in the picture - that is them, they actually blocked my way. My path was blocked by the car. They weren't being "nice" they blocked me way and expected me to go around their car.

But it's not like the car was parked. They were turning around, not doing anything wrong. If you can't cross the road because a car is driving down it, they're not blocking your path, they're just driving on the road.

So the car was turning but stopped to let you cross? They were being nice. If you don’t want to take them up on the offer just wave them on.

Sometimes, as a pedestrian, you have to wait to cross the road. Into every life a little rain must fall.
