Car blocking crossing and hand signal telling me to go

TomorrowToday · 09/03/2024 00:55

I'm walking to the Drs minding my own business with my baby in his bassinet.

A car wants to turn direction so drives into a side street to do it. The side street is a dead end and like all drivers they want to turn their car at the entrance to the road.

I stop a couple of metres from the crossing as the car starts to reverse into the pavement and goes up it a little bit. I'm unsure if the driver sees me.

The passenger winds down their window and hand signals to me to pass.... When they've blocked the dropped curb as well as are making my journey harder.... basically the car bonnet was facing the pram and the direction of the pavement. I don't see why a pedestrian should be inconvenienced by a car, especially with a bassinet.

Aibu for not following the orders/direction of the car driver?

See the replies clearly show no concern for pedestrians or those with less mobility.

What world do people think it's ok for a car to block a pedestrians path and a pedestrian has to walk around the car.

Normal people would think the onus is on the car driver to not block paths and to drive considertatly.

Instead it's ok for passengers to hand gesture for mother and prams to go into the road traffic instead of the car not blocking dropped curbs.

Next time you have no facilities for women or children, remember that this car was blocking the dropped curbs and you thought it was ok for the pram to not be allowed to use the dropped curbs because cars.

Weird

Talk about over reaction 🤣

Don't follow drivers instructions either.

Well that does depend, and falls under the only do so if you feel safe. But you should never follow a passenger's instructions as they won't know the intention of the driver either.

True. I wouldn't ever trust the driver either. They might mow you down

He was blocking my path. Why should I have to go around a driver who decides to pull into a pedestrian walkway and I take extra time and effort to go around a car who has already reversed up the pavement and quite possibly didn't see me.

Don't worry, you are not unreasonable.

Drivers in my town are (insert swear words of your choice).
Today cars were blocking ambulance for few minutes, I guess lights and sirens are just a funny feature no action needed.

@schloss mate it was literally all I did. I stood still, raised my hand to say no thanks. Verbally told them I need the dropped curb. Used my hand to tell them to go. Everything. The cat wouldn't move.

That's because it is a well known fact that there are by laws about moving a cat.

Cars however....well you either wait, or go around. Cars are allowed to be on roads. Hth

puzzledout · 09/03/2024 18:38

@Change2banon as I thought...... why I asked

AIBU - yes!

I'll up the anti then and add stuff that didn't happen!

No no no, there was only one route OP could take and it wouldn’t have been pretty!

@schloss I wasn't given the option of staying where I was. He forced me to move. The best option would have been for him to get out the way as I requested. I wasn't in his way, he had already reversed on the curb.

No, the best option would have been for you to back up away from the back of his car and let him complete his manoeuvre to leave. Your fucking around, because HOW DARE he inconvenience you, probably took at least three times as long as using a bit of common sense instead of entitlement would have🤷‍♀️

Then again, doing that would have made this non event even more of a non event and where is the MN post in that? 🙄

You mean I was supposed to know he was going to mount the curb, I should have walked forward, so I could walk back.

There was enough room for him to pull out, he had already mounted the curb.

I prefer as pedestrian to wait and let cars get themselves fully out of the way, and then carry on with my planned route when there’s plenty of time.

I don’t like it when drivers stop and waive me across the road, and prefer to wait until they’ve gone.

So I’m with you OP.

Its not a good way to teach children to cross the road either - in my case, obviously in yours your baby is too little to know.

I tend to step back from the edge to make it clear I’m not going to go until they’ve gone by/ finished their manoeuvre.

BIossomtoes · 09/03/2024 23:52

@TomorrowToday you’ve been wittering on about this non event for nearly 24 hours now. I really hope your life I is a bit more exciting than this thread would indicate.

Stop acting entitled

Oh, the irony of the OP saying this Grin

NewName24 · 10/03/2024 00:12

this is another of those threads though, where I can't understand how come 71% of people who have voted are saying the OP i NBU, and yet at least 95% of replies on the first 7 pages are all agreeing she is being completely OTT / ridiculous / daft / making mountains out of molehills.
I get some people vote and don't post, but the discrepancy can't be that much, surely ?

OutOfTheHouse · 10/03/2024 00:21

I swear there are people (and by people I mean men) who go on to ChatGTP and ask it to write a post for MN, hence the initial post not making any sense and using the word bassinet.

TomorrowToday · 10/03/2024 01:01

Curb

Again I'll ask why does the title and first post talk of hand gestures and then it's both car occupants shouting at you?

Which is far more aggressive than hand signals?

Frenchdressing · 10/03/2024 05:16

Some horrible replies on here. Standard for MN. ‘You sound hard work’ and HTH. Why do some people have to be so unkind?

i think the car driver was probably trying to be helpful. However it’s poor driving behaviour. I see so much of it. Cars blocking drives, ignoring double yellow lines, double parking, parking where it impacts visibility etc. parking on pavements.

CJsGoldfish · 10/03/2024 11:35

Apparently Americans spell it the other way. Given the timing of the OP and the reference to a bassinet, I suspect this happened outside the UK.
