Are leggings really comfy?

If they were genuinely comfy then why wouldn't men wear them?

While we are on the subject of leggings, can anyone recommend a decent pair of the cotton type? I used to wear H&M high waisted, wide waistband thick leggings but they’ve definitely changed the material and are no longer thick. I don’t like the workout material leggings.

Thomasina79 · 02/03/2024 21:18

My favourite pair is from marks, dark blue velvet, a bit stretchy, warm, comfortable and I love them, but not sure if they are jeans, jeggings, trousers or leggings, but who cares!

Soupit · 02/03/2024 21:19

Leggings are the world's most uncomfortable garments. I have never yet found a pair that don't edge down within minutes leaving the crotch several cm below where it should be. I've tried all sizes, cheap and expensive. I tolerate them for pilates but still have to hitch them up at regular intervals.

Juanita999 · 02/03/2024 23:01

I'm really confused by all the comments saying leggings are uncomfortable and wondering if I'm speaking a different language, because when I wear leggings I don't even think about them as they're so comfy. Like, literally I put them on and that's it, I forget I'm wearing them till I go to the loo or to bed. Primark, Pep &Co, some from an outlet somewhere. None more than a fiver. And I'm flummoxed by the idea that they could be "anti-feminist", what's that about??

PoweredByFairydust · 02/03/2024 23:20

@Juanita999 I completely agree!! I buy from the same places as they're as comfortable as PJ bottoms to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

They do for running. Otherwise men need pockets.

shearwater2 · 03/03/2024 08:18

My leggings have pockets.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 03/03/2024 08:25

In the same way men don’t generally choose to wear dresses and tights; I think it’s just one of those items of clothing that women tend to wear.

I didn’t put DS in them when he was a baby as the one time I tried he, quite frankly, looked ridiculous! He was skinny (still is) with skinny legs (which are now becoming muscular due to gymnastics) with an enormous bum as he wore cloth nappies. It was not a good look on him 🙈

However, my DD wears them all the time now. Whereas DS wore joggers and jeans or chinos she tend to wear leggings or jeans with the occasional pair of joggers or chinos. I’m not headlined on ‘boys’ or ‘girls’ clothes and she frequently wears her brothers hand me downs and choose them out the drawer herself but I found legging looked silly on DS. But then have good friends who put leggings on their young boys and they looked fine in them.

pensione · 03/03/2024 08:27

I find leggings a bit too warm and clingy, except in very cold weather, when I wear them under trousers.

What I don’t get is how people can sleep in leggings year round. I wear pyjamas but they are loose.

Yes I see lots of men running with shorts over those active quick dry leggings.

But I’d say everyone needs pockets, not just men.

I LOVE leggings, the comfort is incomparable to jeans. I buy the cheap ones from primark or even the pep&co Poundland ones from primark. My usual day to day outfit is this (this is what I'm wearing today) with Ugg boots, trainers in spring.

I have loads of tops this length that I wear with leggings like this, and t shirts the same length when it's a bit warmer.
I'll wear this for round the house, shopping, and baby groups, and to and from work. I would maybe wear jeans for a day out or meeting friends but would change into joggers when I got home!

I don't think I'm your typical Mumsnet user by the sound of things haha!

Looks very comfortable!

PhunkyFantom · 03/03/2024 08:31

I only wear them for the gym or travelling and only with a top that covers my bum.
I really hate the trend for wearing leggings and crop tops. I have no desire to see the outline of anyone's fanjo or their wedgied arse, it looks particularly awful in the skin tone colours that seem to be popular, and for that reason it's a very good thing that Men don't tend to wear them because I don't want to see the outline of a random blokes Frank and beans either.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/03/2024 08:33

I absolutely love leggings and I wear them all day every day. I haven’t worn jeans in years as I find them stiff and uncomfortable.

I am also a feminist. I find I am still able to have feminist thoughts and conversations while wearing my leggings.

Someone asked upthread for recommendations, my favourites are from Bam. They’re pricey but I wait for the sales and/or used discount codes:

My friend (American) has a real bugbear about this "Leggings are NOT pants!!"

She means, they are basically underwear Grin and people should not be using them as trousers (unless you're at the gym, but tracksuit bottoms/yoga pants are acceptable too)

To be fair, I see her point - I tend to wear them with longer tops, or under a skirt/dress, or as an extra layer under trousers if it's really cold. I think they reveal a bit much for my own comfort around the bum area and would prefer for it not to be showing.

Men and women have different shaped bodies so what's comfortable for one may not be for others.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/03/2024 11:41

I think men should absolutely wear leggings if they want to and find them comfortable but I think they generally don’t because
a) They are seen as feminine clothing (because they’ve pretty much only been worn by women in recent times)

b) A male ‘outline’ in leggings is noticeable which men might be self conscious about and
c) Many women wear long tops/tunics over leggings so the crotch and bum areas aren’t visible. It’s harder to imagine this style on a man.

CurlewKate · 03/03/2024 11:43

@Waitingfordoggo I mentioned earlier that my ds has to wear them sometimes and he finds it incredibl embarrassing. Poor little soul.🤣

Rollinroller · 03/03/2024 11:44

My son does gymnastics and they wear longs, similar to leggings but with a stirrup. They get more uncomfortable wearing them as they get older, so id say the reason men dont wear them is that they would fully show their genital in enough detail you could draw them

nanamoo · 03/03/2024 13:13

I live in leggings 24/7 lol. I've got bedtime ones i wear at PJ's and daytime ones that are a bit thicker and don't show your undies to all and sundry lol

I've got fibro and pretty often even my skin hurts, so i need clothing that is soft and comfortable, for me that is my leggings.

Do they not fall down? Do you wear them really tight or loose?

I wonder if I am just the wrong shape? I'm 5'8" and a pear shaped size 14. I've bought large, small and medium in all kinds of brands. They fall down. Bought some Llama leggings because I loved the pattern but even after carefully pulling them right up to the crotch they fall down as soon as I walk.

I've had tights fall down in the crotch but never leggings. I'm a 5'4" apple, maybe my belly keeps them up 😂

QueenMegan · 03/03/2024 14:32

No idea I guess due to their appendages.
I used to wear in 80s and only started again due to menopause belly. Jeans are no longer my friend

Peoplecoveredinfish · 03/03/2024 22:23

Because men expect trousers to have pockets and a fly for quick wees. Basically, they are used to a great deal more convenience as standard than women. They aren’t going sacrifice that to look good. Women are expected to (and this women’s clothes are made to) put looks first, and comfort and convenience second.

BertieBotts · 04/03/2024 08:24

Pockets is fair, but in terms of the convenience of a fly, I find it easier to just pull an entire pair of trousers up/down rather than have to undo things. Different anatomy, I suppose.
