How much laundry do you have piled up?

I know I’m bad but curious if I’m average bad or bad bad.

Bathroom laundry bin is full and overflowing (30l). Both kids laundry bags are half full (25l). Mine and Dh’s laundry bin (30l) is three quarters full.

Our dining table is fully covered in washed laundry that needs to be folded and taken upstairs. Paying one of my kids to do that today. Table has become a bit of a de facto cupboard as we all often go there first to find clean clothes.

I'm going to,sound smug but I have one duster in the washing basket and that's it! Everything else is washed and put away.

I make use of the timer on the washing machine so I have a load washed and ready at the time we wake up (put it in the night before and set the timer) then put another load on while that one is in the dryer. Sheets and towels washed at the weekend and it just keeps it right down.

peachgreen · 29/02/2024 13:43

None, but that's because I am a terrible person who uses the tumble dryer all the time and doesn't iron anything. You can't have it all!

LBOCS2 · 29/02/2024 13:44

There's a small load of adult lights in my wash basket, and three days' worth of uniform in the DDs' wash basket.

Where we fall down is putting stuff away. We mostly get dressed in our utility room because that's where our clothes live 😬

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/02/2024 13:44

Clean laundry has been left on the armchair this morning because we are both wfh so I took it out of the dryer and haven't had time to fold it. Apart from that there's a few towels. Couple of delicate items and a very small amount of others. Wouldn't even make a load but I don't like getting behind with it and was off yesterday

Get yourself a heat recovery tumble dryer, they use MUCH less electricity because they recycle the warmth they create instead of expending it straight out during the process.

I second this! Last month we got an AEG heat pump dryer and it is outstanding and so cheap to dry. Costs about 30p ish a full load in the heat pump dryer. Compared to about £1.40 in a condenser dryer. It is so much quicker than I was expecting as well, all the reviews so they cam be slower (but cheaper) than a condenser but I'm not finding that.

Growlybear83 · 29/02/2024 13:45

I usually do a wash each day, and try to get it ironed within a couple of days.

Happierwithouthim · 29/02/2024 13:48

Towels dried ready to put away, one wash on line in shed to be brought in, laundry basket still fairly empty which can only mean my children have clothes & underwear scattered on floors in their rooms Grin
Need to ask about this tonight as I'm away at the weekend.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 29/02/2024 13:49

One load in the dirty basket, one in the washing machine and one in the dryer. No clean washing waiting to be sorted and put away, if I had seen this a few hours ago though the answer would be different (3 overflowing baskets of clean washing sorted and put away this morning). It's one of those jobs that easily gets away from you.

NotFastButFurious · 29/02/2024 13:49

get some of those spikey drier balls too

Whereshallwelivee · 29/02/2024 13:51

Honestly, I have to do one load of washing and drying a day. There are 5 of us and if I let it pile up, the washing bit is okay, but I hate putting it away and it will be piled out of the clean washing basket. A small load is far easier to deal with.

Meadowfinch · 29/02/2024 13:51

One of the joys of working from home. I can put a wash on at 8am, on the line at 12.30 and bring it in at 6.

Alcyoneus · 29/02/2024 13:52

Why is laundry such a big job, according to MN? The machine washes it. the machine dries it. And the you put it away. It’s only a huge job of you iron everything before putting it away.

TM1979 · 29/02/2024 13:53

2 adults & 3 kids here. This morning I had to wash a work jacket for dh. It took up the whole machine. Then I stuck a dark load on and I have another load going on now. There’s a few white bits but they’ll have to wait til there’s more to warrant a wash. Always loads of washing here. Both Dh & Ds19 have manual outside jobs so lots of dirty stuff there.
The 4 laundry baskets in the bedroom are empty now. I use the dryer and a clothes horse. I don’t iron unless once in a blue moon if someone needs a good shirt or something
I Fold and put away clean clothes asap. I actually quite like laundry as jobs go.

Theoldwoman · 29/02/2024 13:55

I like doing the laundry too. Easiest job by far!

What about stuff you can't tumble though? Like DS sports joggers that cost me a fortune and will shrink in the drier?
Or my work trousers that will also shrink? Pjs shrink.....
I have a new drier, so it's not the drier. Maybe it's user error 🤔
I'm genuinely asking, not being sarky.
Do you tumble EVERYTHING?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 29/02/2024 13:56

We live in a flat with no garden so I use a tumble drier. Wash, dry and put away. No effort at all. The one shared washing basket is half full.

I only wash clothes that are in the basket. If family members (teenagers) leave clothes on their bedroom floors they don't get washed.

BeretRaspberry · 29/02/2024 13:57

I have about five loads backed up because my tumble dryer broke and its replacement is coming in a few days.

I can do some of it but I like the dryer for bedding and towels.

TokyoSushi · 29/02/2024 14:00

I've just done a big blitz, hamper was overflowing this morning, so I have done 3 loads, changed DD's bed and put 2 loads away that have been hanging around since the weekend - go me!

Peekaboobo · 29/02/2024 13:10

None. I follow "A Slob Comes Clean" advice and do all the laundry on one day - yep one day, not a load a day that seems popular with most people.

It's a game changer getting it all done in one day and having 6 days where I don't worry about it.

Go have a look at her website for inspiration she's got other good ideas too.

I would like to do this but how do you get it all dry in a day. That's my problem it takes a good 12 hours to dry one load

Mauhea · 29/02/2024 14:05

I tend to do one load a week of all the pants, socks, workwear, and tops that don't pass the sniff test (important to note that only the tops are subjected to sniffing!). At the moment the laundry basket is nearing on full, which is fine. What is not fine is the three loads of clean clothes currently on display as a modern art piece by the end of the bed. Early pregnancy has destroyed any desire to fold and put away until energy levels are back and regular service resumes!

GrouchyKiwi · 29/02/2024 14:07

I have one load (towels and things) to fold, two loads on the washing line, and another load waiting to be done this evening and hung up on the pulley airer overnight. Then there's most of a load ready for tomorrow.

In this case i'd aim to get it done in 2 days. so one day wash it all and hang it out, thats the easy bit then the following day iron and put away and thats it done for 6 days

I don't have a tumble drier. I use a heated airer which works well but it takes a few hours for things to dry. A lot of my clothes aren't suitable for tumble drying anyway. I've never found it an issue to just pop a load of washing on each day and then I try to find time after I've finished work every couple of days to get the ironing done - it usually takes less than an hour to iron a couple of loads.

minipie · 29/02/2024 14:18

Drying - does your machine have different settings for different fabrics? Is the machine definitely turning as it dries? My dryer is only ever half full max as we have so much non tumble stuff … guess that helps

I currently have two clean & dry loads awaiting folding

A few dirty bits in the basket but not much

and I bet the Dc still haven’t put away their clean and folded stuff from the last round…

I have a dryer (well, I will when the replacement comes), but I wouldn’t put everything in either. I use it for towels, bedding (but not our cotton stuff as it comes out creased - the kids’ character stuff is usually polycotton so that’s ok), undies and some pjs that don’t shrink.

Everything else goes on an airer with a dehumidifier or on the line when dry outside.
