Woke up to deflated tires because I drive an SUV.

Jealous, petty wankers.

Anyone got got this morning?

@Cazpar so a single parent takes their child shopping with the pram and needs a bigger car to do this and you think that's a convenience? They live miles from the supermarket so what are you suggesting they do to appease you?

None of this matters while Taylor swift, Rishi Sunak and the like are private jetting around like it's nothing.

Cazpar · 29/02/2024 18:07

I wouldn't class a camping trip or shopping en famille as "needs" tbh. Wants and convenience, sure.

By that logic, very few people 'need' a car.

Also, the risk of being killed by a car, whether you are a child or an adult is less than .2 of 1%.

How big a car do you think one adult and one infant need? They'll hardly be shopping for an army.

So no, they wouldn't "need" an SUV to go shopping.

And this is ignoring the option of supermarket deliveries, of course.

We're not talking about cars full stop. We're taking about SUVs.

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 29/02/2024 18:17

Everyone saying the protesters are brainless, don't have jobs etc. I think this kind of sabotage is doing exactly what they want it to, which is drawing attention to their cause and getting people talking (this thread being a case in point). They're hoping to make SUVs become socially unacceptable, the way that drink driving is.

Obviously it's illegal, and in my opinion turning more people away from their case rather than being constructive. But I think you're really showing your character by assuming that anyone who dislikes your lifestyle choices is jealous. There's lots of things I dislike about other people's lifestyle choices: fake grass, hot tubs, gender reveal parties, but I'm not jealous.

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 18:17

@Cazpar well a mini or similar small hatch wouldn't cut it. You'd need a large hatch or something with a big boot.

My point which is being missed by most is that a saloon/estate is not much different than an suv but they are demonised because people don't understand.

A Tiguan is a gas guzzler. So is a Mondeo. So is a captur.

Anyone who drives a Range Rover doesn't care about any taxes bestowed on them to do so. They care about the image.

Braksonsboss · 29/02/2024 18:26

My SUV is an unmarked emergency vehicle kitted out to be able to access remote areas. I had the tyres let down on it and luckily it didn't impact on my work but it could have done. Some people have SUVs for necessity rather than choice.

LlynTegid · 29/02/2024 18:33

Two wrongs don't make a right.

@Braksonsboss you are probably about 1% of all SUV drivers. I would make anyone who wants to drive an SUV take their test in one. I bet numbers would reduce.

You can see a child much more easily and at a shorter distance in an estate car.

Didn't you read the letter they attached?

Guarantee none of it stems from jealousy

It doesn't matter what it stems from. It's criminal damage.

You are right, in cities, very few people do 'need' a car

I disagree. I drive several different vehicles and the SUVs offer the best driving position and visibility.

Would they be mile's from a supermarket in a city, and couldn't they have their shopping delivered anyway?

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 18:40

@Braksonsboss I think what @ClaudiaWankleman is getting at is the blindspots and suv may have that a smaller car may not - similar to a lorry having blindspots. However, I don't agree. I nearly reversed into a mother and a child in my mini. They were in my blindspots as I looked left and right they sort of travelled across. The size doesn't affect it if it's a very small child it will be hidden anyway.

The answer is... parking sensors.

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 18:42

@Allfur you know a big refrigerated van delivers the food right? How economical do you think they are? Driving around all day every day.

And yes, miles away to do a weekly shop would need a car.

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 18:43

@Allfur sorry didn't explain fully. You can be miles away from a Tesco in a city. I am.

Cantara · 29/02/2024 18:50

What about those of us who drive an SUV due to living rurally and needing one? Should we have extra, smaller cars if we happen to need to travel to a city?
Regardless, anyone who puts someone else's tyres down is a criminal and idiot of the highest order.

HungryForUdon · 29/02/2024 18:51

The only suitable car for my needs on the motability scheme happened to be an SUV.

I read upthread that a blue badge doesn't deter these arseholes.
Great!

spookehtooth · 29/02/2024 18:51

I don't have a problem with it. Far too many cars on the road. Not only are the numbers on the road endlessly going up but so is the size. We cannot deal with the climate and ecological emergency without turning this around. EVs are no solution, the mining involved is a disaster and there's no serious investment in recycling and recovering the minerals.

The advertising on the street and the people demanding them are all fair game. Why go to the manufacturers, they'll stop selling when people stop buying. Extinguisher campaigns in some areas have led to a drop in demand.

On a more personal note, where I live there's too many residential roads that have parking on the pavement, it's still legal in most of the country, they make it hard for people to walk or disabled people to wheel along the streets, and they also damage the pavement too. Why is it these people are allowed to do this? Quite often they're forcing vulnerable people into the road to continue their journey

It's making private use of public land. They'd soon complain if I installed a bicycle stand for locking up my bicycle yet it's basically the same thing 🤔

Braksonsboss · 29/02/2024 18:38

The higher up your bonnet is, the less you can see. SUVs have this intrinsic flaw. You possibly just haven't noticed that you can see less.

This is what I'm talking about here

I have a Rav4 which we use for doing big shops, bringing back large bags of animal feed / garden supplies and going camping with.

It's also a self charging hybrid.

Would they take offence to that or would they leave that part of my personal property which they have absolutely no right to touch alone?

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 19:04

@ClaudiaWankleman thanks for that. We don't have anything near a Cadillac Escalade in this country tho.

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 29/02/2024 19:06

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 18:42

@Allfur you know a big refrigerated van delivers the food right? How economical do you think they are? Driving around all day every day.

And yes, miles away to do a weekly shop would need a car.

Refrigerated vans going from house to house on a planned itinerary are far more efficient than multiple households driving to the shop and back.

And if you "need" an SUV to fit one adult, two children and a week's shopping then what you actually need is a better pram. I never had any problem fitting two children, two adults, a double buggy and a week's shopping in a Ford Focus (on the very rare occasions when we did it in person - generally when we were en route to a holiday cottage).

AcridAndStanLee · 29/02/2024 19:16

@AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent

Do you have figures? I'm sure there are arguments either way but they are not economical vehicles at all and the drives they are saving may be smaller and more economical. I don't think it's as simple as saying one doing all the journeys is better.

A Ford focus is a solid car (I've had two and love them) but I don't think that's the kind of car other posters are suggesting people get. The same size car but taller is an SUV - which people are frothing at the mouth to stop.

dottiedodah · 29/02/2024 19:23

Whatever the rights and wrongs of an SUV ,surely letting tyres down counts as criminal damage? Bloody idiots .Is there nothing the police can do?
