Is Keir Starmer right?

AdamRyan · 28/02/2024 13:31

Today he called the Conservatives "the political wing of the flat earth society" following Liz Truss' comments about the deep state in the US.

I am a big starmer fan, so want to sanity check my opinion, which is that the Conservatives seem to have bought into a lot of conspiracy theories recently, such as "no go" areas in Birmingham, London being "controlled by Islamists", the civil service being run by transactivists as well as Truss' comments.

Or do you think this is a smear and the Conservatives are being reasonable?

If I had a third option I'd also include a "meh - not interested" option for people

Video for people who want to listen to what Starmer said.

YABU - the Conservatives are not getting sucked into conspiracies, this is a smear

YANBU - the Conservatives need a large consignment of tin foil ASAP

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow they think they are looking all anti establishment and it will appeal to northern red wall voters. Pushing the boundaries.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/02/2024 10:04

Absolutely.

I hated her, but she did have SOME integrity. It’s just bonkers now. Which crazy person is going to speak next and it just be normal?

Truss, Anderson, Boris, that education secretary who gave photographers the finger, Bridgen. It’s like a zoo

Andrea Jenkyns - who's a fan of Trump.

Which is all very well.

Until you are the establishment

It should be fuck all surprise that countries that are unstable enough to fall to one coup or revolution tend to very quickly fall to another unless the incumbents go very (with emphasis on "very") hardline with dissent.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2024 10:28

He's got his own flat earthers. He should call out the trend for denying reality and punishing people who don't fall for it.

He should carry on exactly as he is. The lunacy displayed on the benches opposite is making it like shooting fish in a barrel and he’s absolutely right to point it out - as the 20+ points lead in the polls shows.

TempestTost · 29/02/2024 10:31

There are some real idiots in the CP. There are a good number of bonkers people in the LP though too.

We are in a difficult period for conspiracy theories, I think they are flourishing more than normal. There is a lot of stuff that goes on that seems cray, except rather than being made up, it's true. Stuff like the Denton document, or even things like the way FB collects data, etc. Some of the cray stuff that went on worldwide with covid seems like a conspiracy theory, except it's not. It makes it a lot harder to know when to be skeptical.

Starmer is just looking for a way to make the other party look bad though, which is normal enough coming up to an election. He needs to distract from his own party idiocy, gay giraffes etc. It's fair enough I guess, but I wouldn't tend to take the claims at face value.

DuncinToffee · 29/02/2024 10:34

The government is pulling Tuesday’s vote on banning MPs accused of violent and sexual offences from parliament after some Tory MPs put up a fight

Yes, they know what a woman is

Which claims?

Truss's speech has been recorded so you can check for yourself

Fact are of no interest to conspiraloons. There's hours of YouTube footage of Bible Bashers being read sections of the Bible where God tells people to have abortions (https://ffrf.org/component/k2/item/25602-abortion-rights) and either saying "that isn't in the Bible" (it is) or just walking off.

Diefrausagtnein · 29/02/2024 10:45

@TempestTost looking for a way to make the other party look bad ? Ah yes, because that’s so difficult. Like gay giraffes and are worse than actual corruption 😂

Cornettoninja · 29/02/2024 10:55

Starmer is just looking for a way to make the other party look bad though

he’s hardly ‘looking’, the Tories scandals and gaffes are practically shoved in his (and the rest of the country’s) face on a daily basis. It would be odd if he didn’t comment on them and use the floor to hold them to account. He is leader of the opposition, he can’t just ignore the antics of the cabinet even if he wanted to. The fact is their incompetence has such wide reaching consequences he’s obliged to address these things rather than use his platform to push Labours agenda.

Don’t worry though, Rishi is more than happy to use the same platform to push his own campaign rather than answering a question.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/02/2024 10:57

Does he need to look? It’s right under everyone’s nose. He doesn’t have to look very far realistically.

Until very recently, the legal definition of woman was based on science. Until very recently.

I am no conservative. I'm a left wing feminist. However I think Starmer has an absolutely fucking hide suggesting conservatives would believe in flat earth. You know what, they probably do, knowing what conservatives are like. But Starmer is the last person who should talk about flat earth. If you believe women have penises (legal or in physical fact), you're a science-denier. And more likely to be a flat-earther than anyone. I bet he'll regret popping his head up on this. He should have kept his mouth shut, given how anti-science he is. Pot calling the kettle black, indeed.

Yes this.

See that this thread has descended on to some sort of bizarre circle jerk amongst the same old posters who worship Starmer. One even declared love for him on another thread!

Worship Starmar you say? Are you suggesting some sort of cult? Do they slaughter virgins or have taco Tuesdays?

just asking. For a friend.

And my take on it is that certain posters insist on bringing self ID into threads where the subject is different in order to derail them into their preferred agenda.

Never enough of them for the obsessive GC posters. All threads have to bend to their will, even if they are about something else.

JimBobsWife · 29/02/2024 18:29

OP claims to want to 'sanity check' her opinion. Judging by all the emojis and faux sincerity, I think she actually just wanted an echo chamber thread with a load of other Starmer supporters.

Sorry, shouldn't have assumed OP was a she (with or without a penis)
