Dinner this evening was ostrich steaks. Something a bit different that my DC were willing to try.

I’m fortunate that I’ve amassed an array of different gravy granules - beef, chicken, pork and lamb. I don’t however have ostrich gravy. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

So, after a deliberation in my own head, I decided beef gravy would be the most appropriate, as to me, ostrich is more like a non-fatty red meat than anything else. This choice triggered a 10 minute discussion on the nuances of the ostrich genus, chickens and the T Rex.

My DCs begrudgingly used the beef gravy, but have asked me to buy turkey gravy for the next time.

Was I being unreasonable for using beef gravy? Is turkey gravy really the answer?

Grim...poor things.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/02/2024 21:46

Any type of gravy is wrong. On any meat!

Theimpossiblegirl · 25/02/2024 21:46

I'd go half and half...

BloodandGlitter · 25/02/2024 21:47

Ach, The vegans have arrived.

I love ostrich it's really good for you. Definitely should have been a bird based gravy though.

Rainbowshit · 25/02/2024 21:47

Shocking. How could you?!? Surely chicken is the default?!

Multipleexclamationmarks · 25/02/2024 21:47

Mix of beef and chicken together

LovelyTheresa · 25/02/2024 21:47

Grim...poor things.

Why? It sounds as if the DC were willing to try something new. I've never tried ostritch, but if someone were to offer me some, I would willingly try it. It's not as if OP force fed them!

YourWinter · 25/02/2024 21:48

There’s a clue… ostriches have feathers.

Cameraclick · 25/02/2024 21:48

I would have opted for chicken just based on the fact it is also a bird

ODFOx · 25/02/2024 21:48

I'm going to recommend a peppercorn or Diane sauce with ostrich rather than gravy.

cardibach · 25/02/2024 21:48

All gravy granules are disgusting, so it’s irrelevant. Real gravy or nothing.

Revelatio · 25/02/2024 21:50

I’ve never heard the words ‘fortunate’ and ‘array of gravy granules’ in the same sentence before and pray I never do again.

HonorGold · 25/02/2024 21:53

My first thought was Turkey. We have it for Christmas. It is in a Purple container if using Bisto (think it’s Bisto…) I have all of them. Chicken is too chicken… and I would imagine Ostrich to be more gamey? Defibrley go with Turkey next time.

beef is all wrong…

helpfulperson · 25/02/2024 21:55

I think that given all the starving children in the world any food should have been gratefully received. (or at least that is what my mother used to say), That said what I had used would have depended on what I had in the cupboard which currently would have meant vegetable gravy.-

Itslegitimatesalvage · 25/02/2024 21:58

You need to make a red wine gravy next time. Flour the steaks, fry in the pan with onions then remove the streaks and deglaze with red wine. Add some stock (you can debate beef or chicken but I’d go beef) and seasoning and herbs. Let it thicken, pop the steaks back in to warm through and then yum!

Toetouchingtitties · 25/02/2024 22:00

Mixing gravy introduces other complications, such as guessing the viscosity of the final product. In my experience, different water to granule ratio is required between products.

Seeline · 25/02/2024 22:01

I would use beef too.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 25/02/2024 22:01

Gravy with steak?!

Blasphemy!

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 25/02/2024 22:03

There is nothing better than a good gravy (personally I prefer lamb gravy) but Ostrich steaks I would serve as a steak, not a meat roast, so garlic butter or mushroom or peppercorns sauce.

Crunchingleaf · 25/02/2024 22:04

Having tried Ostrich before I would have thought beef was the natural choice.

Renamed · 25/02/2024 22:04

From googling, apparently you should have prepared a Red Wine or a Calvados sauce. Shame on you

Atlaswasafool · 25/02/2024 22:10

Not a dilemma I will ever have, but some of the Sainsbury’s reviews are scathing:

Dreadful
Dry, tough, flavourless. Threw mine away. Very poor, certainly won't be buying again

Made me and my partner sick
We got these for dinner and cooked following the instruction's "2.5misn each side then rest", about 6 hours later both of us where very un well for about a day. I'm 99% sure these where the cause. Based of other reviews assuming we just got unlucky but wouldn't risk again.

Ostrich is more beefy than chickeny.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 25/02/2024 22:13

I’ve never had ostrich but I can understand your reasoning.

But I probably would have gone with vegetarian gravy if I had it because that is my default. My mum used onion gravy as her default.

In the absence of those, I can see turkey as preferable to chicken for ostrich.

Did you consider lamb as an alternative to beef? Having not tried ostrich, I feel that could have worked too.

Having considered the full Bisto range, I mostly just think that if anyone criticises the food I provide, they get to cook the next time.

How was the ostrich? I’d imagine tougher than turkey and, as you said, gamier too.

MadMadamMimz · 25/02/2024 22:15

If in doubt, always go with chicken.
