Dinner this evening was ostrich steaks. Something a bit different that my DC were willing to try.

I’m fortunate that I’ve amassed an array of different gravy granules - beef, chicken, pork and lamb. I don’t however have ostrich gravy. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

So, after a deliberation in my own head, I decided beef gravy would be the most appropriate, as to me, ostrich is more like a non-fatty red meat than anything else. This choice triggered a 10 minute discussion on the nuances of the ostrich genus, chickens and the T Rex.

My DCs begrudgingly used the beef gravy, but have asked me to buy turkey gravy for the next time.

Was I being unreasonable for using beef gravy? Is turkey gravy really the answer?

I wouldn't have served it with gravy at all.

ODFOx · 25/02/2024 21:48

I'm going to recommend a peppercorn or Diane sauce with ostrich rather than gravy.

Yes I'd also have made a sauce and not a gravy
But agree with those saying use a bird based gravy for ostrich

CactusMactus · 26/02/2024 13:27

Not sure I would eat ostrich... really not sure why not though!

TheDandyLion · 26/02/2024 13:28

All those gravys and you haven't got the all rounder just onion gravy?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/02/2024 13:31

I think I’d have used chicken gravy, given that they’re both birds - or turkey, if available. I’ve tried ostrich in S Africa and TBH wasn’t impressed - it was very dry.

11NigelTufnel · 26/02/2024 13:47

I would have paired bird with bird in a gravy situation. I wouldn't choose gravy with beef steak though, peppercorn sauce all the way. Not that kids are that likely to eat that much pepper.

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 26/02/2024 14:03

I think you chose right. I have passed ostrich off as beef to my fussy youngest before (also venison).

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 26/02/2024 14:40

I don't do gravy, but I would have eaten it with a redcurrant sauce.

Lassiata · 26/02/2024 14:56

Well this vegan has arrived. Gross. But far more gross that people take cows' babies away from them and let them keep lactating so humans can drink milk, and chop down the rainforest for soy for animal feed. Then coo over dogs and cats.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/02/2024 14:58

I wouldn't have gone for beef gravy with bird meat, but in fairness I'm a vegetarian so what do I know! I probably would have guessed chicken.

Ginandjuice57884 · 26/02/2024 14:59

You have four types of sodding gravy. Why?! When will the madness end?

RunningFromInsanity · 26/02/2024 15:07

You would assume ostrich is poultry so chicken or turkey but it is more a red meat so I would go beef.

This is a serious decision though.

Ostrich shouldn’t be dry if it’s cooked properly. Medium rare if you must, but
game meats of all kinds are best enjoyed rare. Same goes for any kind of antelope.

Nobody suggested pouring ice cream or soya custard over it.

So we're all good here.

“Ostrich meat is red because it contains myoglobin, a protein that turns red once exposed to oxygen. The USDA classifies ostrich meat as technically poultry, but it looks and tastes almost exactly like beef and is a perfect 1-1 replacement for beef in most recipes that call for red meat.”
from www.americanostrichfarms.com

  • It’s a red meat
  • It tastes like beef
  • It’s used as a replacement for beef
So beef gravy.

Your DC are making an assumption because it’s technically “poultry.” But it’s actually red meat that contains myoglobin so either beef gravy or red wine sauce. Or maybe peppercorn sauce.

Ok, so my learnings so far.

  1. Roughly 60% think I was being unreasonable for using beef gravy.
  2. Ostrich is regarded as both poultry and red meat.
  3. Ostrich is both dry and juicy.
  4. Gravy is and isn’t an accompaniment to ostrich steaks. Some sauces also might be. Ice cream and soya custard not so much.
  5. I have both too many and too few gravy options in my cupboard.
  6. (edit) - Gravy granules may or may not be acceptable under any circumstances.

Thanks, this AIBU has really helped me.

Ocado flash sale? Our family also debating the right sauce for ostrich steak as it was so cheap on offer - ended up being a mix of mint, mushroom and sweet chili (not all together).....

wafflingworrier · 26/02/2024 19:40

YABU
Obviously u need a red wine reduction with ostrich, or light shavings of parmesan/truffle

😊

Cheeesus · 26/02/2024 19:42

I’m pleased that’s clearer, OP 😁

Any type of gravy is wrong. On any meat!

Yay at last I thought I was the only person in the world who doesn't need gravy.
I mean what is the point of it?

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 19:59

@Toetouchingtitties Grin

Every day is a learning day - I too have 4 varieties of gravy granules. Btw if you stir a tbsp of redcurrant jelly into beef or lamb gravy made with granules and a bit of chopped rosemary you can fool even purists that you made the gravy Grin

We had Ostrich steaks last week and DH and I really disliked it but DD5 loved it and ate mine as well. We did a pepper sauce.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 26/02/2024 21:38

Yes, ostrich steak, the clues in the word steak. You’ve just reminded me that I have some in my freezer.
