Dinner this evening was ostrich steaks. Something a bit different that my DC were willing to try.

I’m fortunate that I’ve amassed an array of different gravy granules - beef, chicken, pork and lamb. I don’t however have ostrich gravy. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

So, after a deliberation in my own head, I decided beef gravy would be the most appropriate, as to me, ostrich is more like a non-fatty red meat than anything else. This choice triggered a 10 minute discussion on the nuances of the ostrich genus, chickens and the T Rex.

My DCs begrudgingly used the beef gravy, but have asked me to buy turkey gravy for the next time.

Was I being unreasonable for using beef gravy? Is turkey gravy really the answer?

You lost me at granules.

Email bisto and ask

Op, you really don't need granules. All the goodness is right there, the juices literally come off the meat. Thicken with cornflour, or dilute with stock depending on what else you've done with the meat. Maybe it's an age/cooking experience thing, but I don't know anyone who uses granules any more.

phishy · 25/02/2024 23:07

I can’t imagine OP got any juice out of Ostrich steak, by online accounts, they don’t have much fat in.

WildBear · 25/02/2024 23:08

This is why I point blank refused to eat Kangaroo... The gravy dilemma was just too painful.

;-)

PickAChew · 25/02/2024 23:11

I had ostrich steaks once, many years ago, and they were extremely dry. If I did try them again, I would be more inclined to slice thinly, velvet with cornflour and stir fry or as per OP, break out the gravy granules. Vegetable for me as there is a limited choice of gluten free ones.

How was the wild bear? Wink

CatamaranViper · 25/02/2024 23:54

I missed the word ostrich out of the first sentence of your OP so this whole thread had been wild for me.

I can't abide bird gravy. The only gravy I will have is bisto beef (yes, even on a roast chicken) or homemade so I'm with you OP.

Ah but a kangaroo burger is brilliant

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2024 23:59

Surely with kanga you make a roux?

ReadingSoManyThreads · 25/02/2024 23:59

YABU to use any gravy granules.

Who the hell has gravy with steak anyway? There are some lovely, simple sauces that can be made that go perfectly with steak. My favourite is peppercorn sauce.

lizzowhiz · 25/02/2024 23:59

Granules? No just no! Make a proper gravy or not at all! Gravy is a few minutes prep and then let it simmer away for a while, dead easy. Granules are an abomination

There’s a clue… ostriches have feathers.

MadMadamMimz · Today 22:15

If in doubt, always go with chicken

Ostrich is a red meat.

I assume you would have to serve that with beetroot. Aussies do many things well but I can’t get on board with beetroot on burgers, no matter what the meat.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Granules are a life saver and consistently ideal.

Very very good.

You jumped onto that one!

DinnaeFashYersel · 26/02/2024 01:03

How was the ostrich and the gravy?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 26/02/2024 02:47

Why didn’t you make the gravy from the ostrich drippings…then you would have had ostrich gravy?

badwolf82 · 26/02/2024 04:45

Gravy? On an Ostrich steak? Ostrich should be cooked medium rare at most - rare is better. Otherwise it will look and taste like an old shoe. And it should be served with a sauce not a gravy - something like a green peppercorn cream sauce or a red wine reduction.

If you aren’t making your own gravy you do not deserve to eat kangaroo. Kangaroo and bisto or gravlax … no!

Please do this and post the results.

Or ask them on the socials? Maybe someone could tweet them this thread and they could get back to us. Might go viral.

Yabu for using granules instead of making it from scratch with than pan juices
