Dinner this evening was ostrich steaks. Something a bit different that my DC were willing to try.

I’m fortunate that I’ve amassed an array of different gravy granules - beef, chicken, pork and lamb. I don’t however have ostrich gravy. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

So, after a deliberation in my own head, I decided beef gravy would be the most appropriate, as to me, ostrich is more like a non-fatty red meat than anything else. This choice triggered a 10 minute discussion on the nuances of the ostrich genus, chickens and the T Rex.

My DCs begrudgingly used the beef gravy, but have asked me to buy turkey gravy for the next time.

Was I being unreasonable for using beef gravy? Is turkey gravy really the answer?

All gravy granules are disgusting, so it’s irrelevant. Real gravy or nothing.

You mean OP should have made gravy from the juices in the enormous tin she roasted her ostrich in?!

I mean she could make an onion gravy or some other sauce - pepper for instance.
Bisto (and other granules) for fake gravy always makes me feel sick for the rest of the day as well as tasting vile.

Every day is a learning day - I too have 4 varieties of gravy granules. Btw if you stir a tbsp of redcurrant jelly into beef or lamb gravy made with granules and a bit of chopped rosemary you can fool even purists that you made the gravy*

I think not.

Please tell your children that taxonomy does not equal gastronomy. Just because they're evolutionarily closely related doesn't mean they taste good together.

For me steaks wouldn't have gravy...And I don't think I've ever seen Turkey gravy granules in the shops? Chicken I guess would be closest, but Ostrich is much more 'beefy'. So yeah, guess I'm on your side. I might use red wine and mix it with the ostrich juices?
Or tell them they can get their own gravy next time!
