Apparently it was the wrong gravy. AIBU?

Dinner this evening was ostrich steaks. Something a bit different that my DC were willing to try.

I’m fortunate that I’ve amassed an array of different gravy granules - beef, chicken, pork and lamb. I don’t however have ostrich gravy. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

So, after a deliberation in my own head, I decided beef gravy would be the most appropriate, as to me, ostrich is more like a non-fatty red meat than anything else. This choice triggered a 10 minute discussion on the nuances of the ostrich genus, chickens and the T Rex.

My DCs begrudgingly used the beef gravy, but have asked me to buy turkey gravy for the next time.

Was I being unreasonable for using beef gravy? Is turkey gravy really the answer?

If in doubt, always go with chicken

Ostrich is a red meat.

Still tastes like turkey, though.

It also needs redcurrant sauce.

NonoLePetitRobot · 26/02/2024 07:31

Use vegetable stock cubes and add some of the meat juice.

Toetouchingtitties · 26/02/2024 07:33

Thank you all for the responses.

It appears I asked the wrong AIBU, but as ostrich produces very little juices and life is too short for cornflour, I was not unreasonable to use granules.

The DCs loved it, which I suppose gives me a future opportunity to do a head to head taste test of all available granules.

I hope your kitchen shelves are large enough to keep all available granules! And we will, of course, need an update with your full report, please.

🤣🤣🤣

I remember the Seinfeld episode about the Soup Nazi. I think Mumsnet has some Gravy Nazis.

Toooldforthis36 · 26/02/2024 07:51

Gravy granules are vile. Literally any other sauce would have been preferable.

therealcookiemonster · 26/02/2024 08:07

I find ostrich quite gamey so it goes well with a robust red wine (I use cranberry or grape juice, because halal) sauce rather than gravy

Shodan · 26/02/2024 08:14

DS2 did an ostrich steak thing for food tech a couple of years ago and made a 'monkeygland' sauce. You could try that next time.

(It's a tomato based sauce, according to the recipe, and although it was ok I couldn't quite reconcile myself to the name.)

Raincoatsandwellies · 26/02/2024 09:33

I'd have come to the same conclusion using the same logic as OP. Ostrich is a red meat (I think) and I hear it's compatible to steak but more tender and healthier?

But I wouldn't put gravy on Ostrich in the first place to be honest.

I can’t imagine OP got any juice out of Ostrich steak, by online accounts, they don’t have much fat in.

We had ostrich steaks the other day with what seemed to be a delicious sauce on them. I asked DH what he'd made, and he said nothing, that was their own cooking juices reduced down. It was lovely, slightly sweet, very umami.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/02/2024 11:21

It also needs redcurrant sauce.

It reminds me of venison🤷‍♀️ agree about the sauce, though.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 26/02/2024 11:23

I've never had ostrich so would probably have done chicken gravy.

So I have learned something new today!

Ach, The vegans have arrived.

I love ostrich it's really good for you. Definitely should have been a bird based gravy though.

I've used a thin chicken gravy in the distant past with ostrich meat, I'd totally forgotten about them til this post though!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2024 11:30

If a meat doesn't have enough or appropriate juices to make proper gravy (commonest case is a gammon joint), then imo the least worst alternative is to just have a tub of veg gravy granules in the cupboard as all the meaty ones are rather grim. Either that or a white/parsley/cheese sauce if apt for the rest of the meal.

ohtowinthelottery · 26/02/2024 11:39

We used to cook our Ostrich steaks rare. I remember DS, when he was younger, asking if the juices on his plate were "Ostrich juice". We told him they were. He proceeded to dip his chips in it and declared it delicious. No need for gravy! But if I was making gravy I would have made beef gravy rather than chicken.

Picklestop · 26/02/2024 11:43

I sometimes make gravy from granules if I am having something like a pie that needs it. But never with a piece of meat, I would have made a sauce!

BudgetFoodie · 26/02/2024 12:19

Gravy granules are vile, regardless of flavour!!

Gravy should be made from meat juices.

Every day is a school day.
I never knew people had gammon with gravy.

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 12:41

Well I like the beef gravy on everything so I'm not the best to askGrin

In honestly though, you can sometimes get a masala wi e gravy mix (in sachets) in larger supermarkets and that went amazingly with game, so I think it would work with ostrich too. I've only had ostrich in burger form myself

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 12:42

Masala wine that is

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 12:44

@BudgetFoodie

I love gravy made from granules, I do pours the juices in if there are sufficient (rarely I find)

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 26/02/2024 12:47

I've voted YABU because I don't think beef gravy goes with ostrich.

But it's hardly the end of the world. Like you said, there is no ostrich gravy!

GalileoHumpkins · 26/02/2024 12:47

Your definition of fortunate and mine are very different.

BishyBarnyBee · 26/02/2024 12:49

Toddlerteaplease · 25/02/2024 21:46

Any type of gravy is wrong. On any meat!

Who are you? Gravy on meat, gravy on chips, gravy is the food of the gods.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2024 12:51

@BishyBarnyBee urgh! Soggy food!

Suchagroovyguy · 26/02/2024 12:53

Why go to the effort of cooking an ‘exotic’ meant, only to swamp it in vile synthetic gravy granules?
