I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

Walking boots that keep feet dry and warm all weathers - dog walking
Superking feather down duvet
Decent car after many cheap ones - now have a heated steering wheel which is bliss on sore cold fingers and the windscreen and back just magically de-ice almost at the touch of a button.

Hard agree.

I didn't even know heated steering wheels were a thing until I bought my current car.
It's absolute bliss when leaving for work on cold mornings, or when coming back to your car in the evening to drive home.

Roomba robot vacuum cleaner. We only use it in the kitchen, but every day

Black & Decker heated airer (more robust than Lakeland version)

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 25/02/2024 09:42

GetOutGetOutGet · 24/02/2024 22:32

4 season king size duvet (made up of a thicker and a thinner layer that you can button together or use separately)

Proper skincare regime from The Ordinary

Getting the car cleaned inside-out every few months for 15£, just not worth doing yourself

Fishbox delivery every 2 weeks - has made me do lots more interesting cooking

Cleaner every fortnight, she also tidies up and folds the laundry!

Could I ask where you get the fish box from please?

Thanks. 💐

Buy yourself a decent steel to sharpen all your knives. Then you'll be even happier 🤣

Expensive appliances. My Miele hoover is 15 years old, top of the range Bosch dishwasher is making me nervous with funny noises at 12 years.
I bought a cheap washing machine when our 18yo AEG broke, and it's had 2 repairs in 3 years, and doesn't even get the washing as clean.

ReginaG · 25/02/2024 09:51

What brand knives are people using?! I just have some from IKEA!

mrsdarthlord · 25/02/2024 09:52

Contigo auto westloop flask. Only that specific one. I've bought countless for gifts and years on people are still using them.

Isabel Marant Nessah cross body bag. It's ruined bags for me as it's perfect and all my other more expensive bags don't get used as much.

My kenwood chef is good as new 12 years on and I use it at least twice a week.

North Face parka. It's the largest kids size and along with the Contigo has made football practice and matches for DSs so much more bearable. It's warm, waterproof and good as new 6 years on.

I've just come back from skiing and hired the most amazing boots. I skiied for hours every day and not an ache or pain. And they are step in and out too. Started a savings pot on Revolut for them!

If you like skiing I highly recommend buying good quality ski boots (seems like you found them! What are they out of curiosity?), but ALSO get them custom fitted (they ‘melt’ the boot so it’s shaped to fit your feet perfectly). It changed my life, I’ve only done it though after I felt I ‘deserved it’ lol. Years of skiing once I got to the advanced level and now I have boots for life.

Electric car with electric charging point at home - charge overnight on cheap rate - also put tumble drier on and dishwasher on overnight. Electric bill has actually reduced having an electric vehicle.

TravChief · 25/02/2024 09:53

Heat pump tumble dryer. I use it every day in winter.

Also Didriksons long coat and Panasonic breadmaker. Mens socks and waterproof thermal gloves.

Iphone. Heated throw for sofa and electric blanket for bed.

GreyDuck · 25/02/2024 09:55

I'm interested in the contigo insulated mugs.
I've got YETI flasks with the hotshot caps, which are fab. It's like drinking from a cup rather than a spout. Great insulation. They come apart and go in the dishwasher so get properly clean. The drawback is that they're really heavy.
Has anyone tried yeti and contigo?

mrsdarthlord · 25/02/2024 09:55

A good accurate electric thermometer (a life saver since having a baby!)

Also, maybe not perfectly answering the question on this thread but getting proper instructors for swimming and skiing (and not being self taught). Once you learn the wrong technique it’s so difficult to unlearn plus it is so much safer (especially for skiing/snowboarding).

We’ve paid for air con to be installed in our bedrooms. It’s a game changer on those boiling summer nights we’re getting more and more often. It was indulgent but I regret nothing!

can't you open the windows/adjust bedding?

Not always. When I moved into my house after a separation 9 years ago, I needed a tumble-drier urgently and could only get a Beko. I had my doubts about it, but it's still working perfectly. It gets used nearly every day for half the year too.

On the other hand, a Sony TV I bought two years ago decided to give up the ghost on Boxing Day, and I was a bit pissed off at that.

My Beko washing machine isn't the most sophisticated thing but is also fine. Got it cheap end of line from one of the online places. I got nattering to a salesguy in John Lewis when off to buy a new Bosch fridge freezer and he also said Beko was decent stuff. I did buy another Bosch fridge freezer - cheaper than the old one in real terms - it's better.

the fuck? If your bedrooms aren’t getting to 30c in these heatwaves then you’re lucky. We have an air con unit for my son’s bedroom for this reason. Opening the window doesn’t make enough of a difference.

Decent kitchen knives. Which reminds me I must sharpen them, I've never actually sharpened them since I bought them 5 years ago.

I love cooking and baking so whilst certain things like knives were expensive they're worth every penny. I could never afford them now though, I bought them when we sold the marital home.

Do you have a link for the kitchen knives? I'd love some that I don't have to sharpen every 5 mins.

@CalmConfident ask any instructor who is the best boot fitter in town and go to them. If you do this at the end of the season you can often get once worn rental boots at a big discount.

Miele dishwasher, forgot about this because it just sits there unobtrusively doing a perfect job every time. I was horrified at the cost but it's been so much better than previous ones.

Wusthof kitchen knives.

Not sure whether this counts, but specialist cookery courses. I bought DH a fish course at Billingsgate for a birthday present and we benefit from what he learned pretty much every week.

Thank you for the miele dishwasher - currently new kitchen and have splashed out on a miele dishwasher as fell in love with it in the showroom ( I am very sad 🤣) himself wasn't too happy. thos one comes with those powder reeks that allocates what ut needs to clean each time and you replace every 2 or 3 months also

if you open the windows during the day of heatwaves you actually letting all the hot air come into the hoise then when close in eve the hot air stays in your house. keep windows closed during heatwaves to keep your house cool. also when have air conditioning on too. I think given the rise in extreme wearher we are having this is quiet smart

I sent our knives away to be professionally sharpened. That was definitely worth the money.

Where do you send them, please?

I've arthritis in my hands and can't do them any more. I tried taking some to someone who messed them up.

I'd appreciate a recommendation. Thank you!

WhyDoesItAlways · 25/02/2024 10:24

We're having aircon installed next week. Knowing my luck it'll be a cool wet summer!

Eufy robovac
Flymo robomower
A large light up makeup mirror
A spray mop

I want to get one of those cars that you can use your phone to turn on the heaters and demisters so it's ready to drive as soon as you get in. Will also be looking out for a heated steering wheel and possibly massage seat after this thread!

Bin liners thick enough that they will not rip and cause mess.

JosephJoseph bin totem bin that has recycling under the rubbish. Game changer in a small kitchen.

ThrallsWife · 25/02/2024 10:26

Expensive heels.

Ever wonder why celebrities walk effortlessly in heeled shoes for hours? It's because they contain padding that your average heels just don't have.

I work on my feet and I am notorious for wearing interesting heels daily. It's because I spend a lot of money on them and they are comfortable!

WhyDoesItAlways · 25/02/2024 10:26

recklessgran · 25/02/2024 05:47

Scoville oven trays and pans.
Indestructible and never stick - wish I'd found them years ago.
Fleecy dog coat with legs - game changer especially with all the rain we've been having lately as no more muddy dog in the house.
Ditto magic mats and runners at all outside doors for the same reason.

Can you link to the fleecy dog coat? Ddog hates being towel dried so one of these might be good for him.

stayathomer · 25/02/2024 10:32

LindaDawn
So someone above told me it’s called a trivet- I looked it up and it’s hard to find one that looks as durable as ours but they possibly all are! Got it from someone a few/ two (?) years ago and was told they got it in arnotts in Dublin in the bargain basement, only about 40euro (I say only, if I’d seen it I’d have walked by it but it possibly is the best present we’ve ever gotten!!)

To spend lots of money on things that make day to day life easier.

Yes, Britain, where it's very humid and the heat feels oppressive and sticky. Give me 40 degrees in Turkey over 28 degrees here any day.

I finally caved and bought an air con (with an exhaust hose, not a fitted unit) last summer because I was in tears of misery due to the heat in my house. I have a 1-tog duvet for summer and even that was too much. Opening the window does nothing and even a normal fan just pushes hot air around.
