I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

Boiling water tap
👌🏼
worth every penny

I'd love one when we do our kitchen refurbishment. DH is against it...I just need to try to persuade him that not only do we need one but that it's his idea...

A Horl knife sharpener has recently changed my life - or at least my knife skills. I could never get the pressure right on a pull through sharpener and ended up serrating half my knives in a really unhelpful way. Steels scare me and I lack the dexterity to get the angle right on a whetstone. This provides the right angle for me and with just a few rolls back and forth my knives are razor sharp.

I’ve recently promised myself that I’ll buy the nice thing that I want rather than trying to find a cheaper version, being disappointed and then buying the real thing after all. It has resulted in lots less waste and lots more time.

Didriksons winter coat. Has revolutionised my winter experience - I'm very rarely not warm, dry and protected from the wind! Such a game changer!

Me too! Never cold, it's long and covers all, so I don't particularly care what is underneath. Always looks great.

A hood and huge pockets - I have stopped taking a bag.

Sickoffamilydrama · 25/02/2024 10:48

the fuck? If your bedrooms aren’t getting to 30c in these heatwaves then you’re lucky. We have an air con unit for my son’s bedroom for this reason. Opening the window doesn’t make enough of a difference.

sweary response seems a tad over the top on a domestic thing. But how the other half lives/poor planet - and yep I do wonder how many days you might "need" in britain. I have slept for weeks through southern europe virtually african nights with little real problem. Son is going to suffer when he leaves home I think.

Not always. When I moved into my house after a separation 9 years ago, I needed a tumble-drier urgently and could only get a Beko. I had my doubts about it, but it's still working perfectly. It gets used nearly every day for half the year too.

On the other hand, a Sony TV I bought two years ago decided to give up the ghost on Boxing Day, and I was a bit pissed off at that.

I'm a bit nervous about it to be honest. I wonder if there might have been a prime time for appliances, and that new ones might not be as durable, regardless of the price point.

Some posh well fitting bras

Getting my front teeth resurfaced

Blue Yeti microphone

redalex261 · 25/02/2024 11:12

Pots! Really, really good quality pots! None if mine match as I have bought them one at a time in January sales etc. as I could afford them. Oldest one must be 28 years old still great.

Ninja frying pans, best pans I’ve had
Hypnos super king mattress
linen sheets from Piglet in bed
Phillips Hue light, absolutely love this lamp.
Mac book air

weekly food/meal box Delivery , The green box, means I’m eating low carb with lots of vegetables including. So easy and I wouldn’t be without it.

Can I please ask what you like about the mattress? Is it cool? Ours seems to be really hot which I hate, can you feel the other person in bed move?

Dance54 · 25/02/2024 11:15

Robot vacuum

ihatethecold · 25/02/2024 11:19

@Bey

it took a while to settle in. Felt too firm for a while. I seriously worried that I’d spent far too much money on a mattress that wasn’t right.

it doesn’t get hot. It’s not got any memory foam in it.

mydamnfootstuckinthedoor · 25/02/2024 11:26

Kitchen Aid mixer. game changer (but it's so heavy, you do have to let it live permanently on the worktop)

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/02/2024 11:28

800 thread count bedding. Going to bed feels luxurious now.

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · 25/02/2024 11:39

@fabio12 what car

Shufflebumnessie · 25/02/2024 11:42

Super-king sized Ottoman bed. The fact you just lift up the mattress part and there is so much easily accessible storage is amazing!

Not necessarily expensive (ours are just cheap) but having several chopping boards and potato peelers makes a huge difference in our house. I can't imaging going back to just having one of each.

A heated steering wheel!!! What kind of car do you have? I get terribly cold hands when I drive.

I have a Land Rover and it has a heated steering wheel .

I bought me dd with eczema a Baavet and it really helped with her Night time itching. I ended up buying myself one too just because I loved the feeling of hers and I absolutely love it, I will never go back to a down duvet now!

Yes!
And baavet pillows and pet beds.

The Garnier micellar water with the pink cap. Takes all my make up off and is cheap as chips.

At the other end of the scale, I really, really value our cleaner. I’ve hit the jackpot as she is incredibly good and reliable and I trust her completely. I love Friday afternoons as she comes in the morning and it improves my mood no end.

Edited

Garnier Micellar water is the best, won’t use anything else

westisbest1982 · 25/02/2024 11:56

MacBook Pro and iPhone. Both sync seamlessly, are ridiculously easy to use, and the former is still going strong after ten years.

JungsWordTest · 25/02/2024 11:59

Global kitchen knives, including a chef's knife
Miele washing machine and dishwasher
Epic Water Filters (from the US)
Horizon treadmill and Concept2 rowing machine
Chest freezer
Baavet duvet and pillow
750 thread-count bedding
Hypnos mattress
Mosquito nets - essential for where we live in the countryside

Octomingo · 25/02/2024 12:17

King size bed. Old House was too small for it. Got expensive mattress but cheaper, ottoman base. Realised we'd been having the wrong type of mattress for years. I thought I was hard, but I'm actually medium soft. My hips don't hurt when I roll over.

Airfryer.
Eti hairdryer. 12 years old and still going strong.

Decent running trainers.

Yes, Britain, where it's very humid and the heat feels oppressive and sticky. Give me 40 degrees in Turkey over 28 degrees here any day.

I finally caved and bought an air con (with an exhaust hose, not a fitted unit) last summer because I was in tears of misery due to the heat in my house. I have a 1-tog duvet for summer and even that was too much. Opening the window does nothing and even a normal fan just pushes hot air around.

Brits can't cope with the heat because they have no idea how a fan works, windows, curtains and blinds closed after a quick airing everyday, Then turn the fan on and close the room door. Having a window open and the fan on is just sheer madness.

Dancingontheedge · 25/02/2024 12:26

Slightly different, but I’m a retired teacher. I now have a lot more money on a monthly basis, because I used to buy things for class to make my life easier and now I don’t.
Pencils, pens, glue sticks, colour pencils, paint and art equipment, toys and puzzles, class library books, a laminator and pouches, a paper trimmer, a class set of protractors, mirrors, set squares…notice boards…

So now I have a Lakeland air dryer for clothes, a set of decent pans and a good set of knives, a subscription to ‘Which?’ to inform my choices, and I plan something new every month.

To be clear, I don’t open my window when it’s hot and I keep the blackout curtains closed during the day. I was replying to that poster’s suggestion of opening the window to cool down.
