I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

On the back of another thread, I resolved to get more small sharp knives as mine are always dirty and waiting to be washed, so thanks to the poster who recommended the Victorinox ones.

Crushed23 · 25/02/2024 08:02

Running socks.

£14 a pair but they have revolutionised my life.

Same goes for all good quality exercise clothes and shoes - they can enhance performance and are a joy to wear.

If I am getting up at 5:30am to make it to a HIIT class, I want to be in high quality, comfortable & pretty gear! 😃

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 25/02/2024 08:16

@CalmConfident ask any instructor who is the best boot fitter in town and go to them. If you do this at the end of the season you can often get once worn rental boots at a big discount.

Miele dishwasher, forgot about this because it just sits there unobtrusively doing a perfect job every time. I was horrified at the cost but it's been so much better than previous ones.

Wusthof kitchen knives.

Not sure whether this counts, but specialist cookery courses. I bought DH a fish course at Billingsgate for a birthday present and we benefit from what he learned pretty much every week.

ChristmasFluff · 25/02/2024 08:19

A house by the sea! Walking on the beach or sea front every day clears my head, brings perspective and makes my life so much easier. I read on the beach every sunny day in summer and swim if there are no jellyfish about.

Also a beautiful glass chopping board. So much easier to clean than plastic or wood, and it lifts my heart every time I see it.

Fleetheart · 25/02/2024 08:23

Muck boots. proper warm wellies have improved my life no end. Now no fear of cold wet feet on dog walks.

I bought me dd with eczema a Baavet and it really helped with her Night time itching. I ended up buying myself one too just because I loved the feeling of hers and I absolutely love it, I will never go back to a down duvet now!

I got one of these when I was starting menopause and was having hot flushes at night. This baavet stopped them immediately

TheGreatGherkin · 25/02/2024 08:35

@BeanyBops

Didriksons coats are the dogs. I recently bought a new one as my original one was looking a bit tired after 12 years. They are not cheap but worth every single penny.

Trysull · 25/02/2024 08:38

I adore our automatic Volvo. I will never buy any other make of car. We'd had Fords and Seats for years and then we had to get an automatic for health reasons.

I just don't know why you would drive a manual car. We drive to The Lakes a lot across the Pennines which used to he exhausting. Not now.

My FIL has a 14yr old Fiesta manual and has hip problems. He has 100s of ks in the bank and drives a lot. I have no idea why he doesn't get himself a new car.

1990thatsme · 25/02/2024 08:47

Agree with Isabel Marant bags. So beautiful and well made but understated.

Also a fan of Egyptian cotton sheets, makes such a difference.

My biggest extravagance is outsourcing domestic tasks as I have cleaners and a gardener, but I’m so absolutely rubbish at both, it’s definitely worth it.

MightyGoldBear · 25/02/2024 08:51

Robot hoover is great. Looking at Robot lawn mower too. Anything that gives me time back is just wonderful.

Soberthoughts · 25/02/2024 08:54

<cries in poor> 🤣🤣

Tiredalwaystired · 25/02/2024 08:59

Fridge freezer with plumbed in water dispenser. There’s no going back from drinking ice cold fridge water!

bouncydog · 25/02/2024 09:02

Quooker tap (after trying cheaper versions that weren’t up to the same standard)
Electric bikes
Magimix steamer (used daily and super quick) - glass and stainless steel so hasn’t gone brittle
High thread count bedding
Wool duvets and Hypnos beds
Tefal steam generator iron

Twiglets1 · 25/02/2024 09:08

Air con in the bedroom (SO grateful for it when we have hot summers but I don’t tell anyone irl in case they think I’m bragging) and a super king bed with vi sprung mattress.

We got a present of this plate type thing that you can put a pot just off the hob on. It’s amazing!! Also we have a good small knife for peeling and I love it!!

Can you give us more details of the plate thing please.

Letsrunabath · 25/02/2024 09:10

Dyson hairdryer. So fast
Instapot does everything
robovac on or 2nd lovely to get up and he’s done all down stairs.
Dubarry boots, 13 years old and I can still wade through streams and have dry feet, will replace as soon as they start to leak.
kitchenaid mixer, food processor and chopper. All robust but the little chopper has really came into itself now I cook for just 2.
Good soft leather gardening gloves.

Lifebeganat50 · 25/02/2024 09:16

Boiling tap
My AE heat pump dryer-cost £1200 but doesn’t make clothes crispy, amd no more shrinkage
A VERY decent mattress
Dunlopillo latex pillows

Alaimo · 25/02/2024 09:18

Better quality food storage containers. Always used to buy the cheapest 20-pack at IKEA and then complain that the lids don't properly fit. Have now bought better quality plastic and glass ones (still from IKEA...) and can now take soup to work without worrying that it will leak.

A better quality bike + paying for an annual service. I always used to have bikes from Halfords and skimp on maintenance and then complain that they were no fun to ride. About 10 years ago I bought a better quality bike, and now pay for annual maintenance/service, and I still use it to cycle to work every day.

AInightingale · 25/02/2024 09:20

I realised when I was (too old) that women's umbrellas were shit and spent £20 on a small, folding umbrella sold in the men's section. It's got a very strong spring and proper metal spokes and even when it blows inside out, it stays intact. Had it for about 5 years now. Made me realise what an absolute take-on the flimsy ones sold to women are, I have gone through dozens in my life and they've been destroyed on the first blustery day.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 25/02/2024 09:24

Moving from a mid-terrace house to a detached house. It's not large or particularly luxurious, but not having to listen every time the neighbours have an argument or flush the lavatory has made life so much more pleasant.

Heated duvet. Bliss.

Robot vacuum cleaner.

Vitamix food processor-reduces nuts to powder in seconds but can also do all the more gentle stuff.

Lentilweaver · 25/02/2024 09:29

Delonghi coffee maker. Use it 3 times a day.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 25/02/2024 09:31

Cross body bags (and carrying less stuff round with me) have done wonders for my neck and shoulder pain.

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 25/02/2024 09:34

miele triflex stick hoover, stands up by itself in the corner so I can just unplug it to use little and more often than before. Beats lugging a Henry down a flight of stairs…
