I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

indoor plumbing, flushing toilet, electric shower.....oh better than having to get at 6am and start the fire or having to go outside to the toilet at the end of the garden.... bliss

Ap42 · 25/02/2024 15:26

Cordless hoover, I hoover a lot (kids and a dog) and good quality skincare.

BigSkies2022 · 25/02/2024 15:31

This is a great thread! It's like a subscription to Which, but free. I have had Dridrikson coat on my list for a while, and this is convincing me to buy. Thanks also for the recommendations for Victorinox knives and the posh German sharpener - great ideas here as well for the increasing numbers of GenZs I know that are gradually setting up home.

Lots of love chez BigSkies also for linen bedding and PJs (Piglet in Bed, Zara Home, Heals and La Redoute, all good). Also bespoke storage (wardrobes designed around what we actually owned and needed to store, shoe cupboard, floor to picture rail bookshelves with adjustable shelving) and when we've been really flush, bespoke furniture.

Ercol furniture - I have items that are 60 years old and more, still beautiful, fit into any setting.

Eric Bompard cashmere jumpers. Freight cushioned sole alpaca socks.

SparklyOwls · 25/02/2024 15:38

A decent supportive pair of shoes. My feet have mucked up walking in cheap pair.

SparklyOwls · 25/02/2024 15:39

I always calculate things like this... If I bought a jumper for £200 and wore once it's worth £200 a wear.

If I wore it 1000 times it's worth 20 pence a wear.

Me too! Never cold, it's long and covers all, so I don't particularly care what is underneath. Always looks great.

A hood and huge pockets - I have stopped taking a bag.

Edited

Can you tell me which one you have please?

JosephJoseph bin totem bin that has recycling under the rubbish. Game changer in a small kitchen.

Yes I came on to say this. DH went from "please don't tell me how much it cost" to "please don't tell MIL how much it cost" to telling all and sundry how wonderful it is.

Also wool duvets, adjustable wool pillows, Egyptian cotton bedding.

Heated airer combined with a Meaco dehumidifier

Ecoegg laundry eggs

DontWasteMyTime · 25/02/2024 16:04

Waste disposal unit - all food waste goes goes it, instead of stinking out the bin.

Ninja airfryer - this one air fries, grills, bakes and roasts. We never use our oven now.

This one! The hood kind of unfurled from being a cosy collar.
It is a good lenght, zips from the bottom upwards too and isn't quite as wide at the waist as some padded coats.

I was lucky enough to buy it at sale price last year.

My Reisenthel shopping trolley. It’s sturdy and so well made. With the trolley I rarely use my car to shop. I can pick up potatoes and tins and whatever and it’s a breeze rolling it home. I do live 5 minutes from a Lidl so that helps.
It’s been well worth the initial investment. 15 years of constant use! Doesn’t look like a pensioner’s trolley. I get a lot of people asking about it. I have the Carrycruiser in bright red.

These look great! Expensive, however if they last for ever ...
Do you have the lid? Where I live it rains most days.

We have a heated steering wheel in our ford focus - lovely!

I have a fiesta but it must be too old for this feature 🤣

if you open the windows during the day of heatwaves you actually letting all the hot air come into the hoise then when close in eve the hot air stays in your house. keep windows closed during heatwaves to keep your house cool. also when have air conditioning on too. I think given the rise in extreme wearher we are having this is quiet smart

The rise in extreme weather is in no small part due to things like air conditioning.

Houses need to be better designed and insulated.

Newer builds are however majority of people live on older builds or some badly built house and cannot afford to retrofit. also weather in UK has changed dramatically in past 20 years

Cordless everything, especially in the garden.

My husband would agree with this. I think he has every product Ryobi make and has set up solar panels and an inverter in the shed to charge them all. 🤓

Sadly fiestas just don’t have as many extras. I have a fiesta and I love it, but the focus of the same age def has more.

Notellinganyone · 25/02/2024 17:38

Prima Donna bras. Expensive but absolutely worth every penny if you are large of nork. Just upgraded my Eufy Robot hoover to one that actually maps the rooms and it’s brilliant. Decent mattress, ours was 1700 pounds but bought on 4 years interest free credit and v comfortable. Large cashmere scarf that’s been a lifesaver as I commute to work on train and bus and it gets v cold on platforms. Le Creuset. My first one died last year but I’ve had it since 1992 so bought a new one.

A kitchen composter bin. Not ££ exactly and not a necessity but the pleasure in putting all of our veg/fruit/teabag scraps in then transferring them once a week to a compost pile in the garden is priceless.

The trick is that is has a thick charcoal filter in the lid, so even in the 35 degree heat last summer there were no fruit flies or any smell whatsoever.

Am so excited to start using my new velvety compost this year! Went outside last weekend to turn it over with a fork and there were huge fat worms gorging themselves (doing all the work!)

Electric car with electric charging point at home - charge overnight on cheap rate - also put tumble drier on and dishwasher on overnight. Electric bill has actually reduced having an electric vehicle.

Even cheaper with an air source heat pump, solar panels and battery!

Ofcourseshecan · 25/02/2024 18:13

Silk underwear. Not sexy stuff but practical camisoles, singlets, T-shirts, leggings. It’s light and thin, and makes clothes hang smoothly and move smoothly.

Above all it’s warm. It’s actually sold as thermal underwear, but without any bulk. I first discovered it when spending a lot of time outdoors in the winter. It’s like a very thin layer of insulation that you can hardly feel under your clothes, really comfortable.

I bought mine from John Lewis and Patra.com. It’s expensive but lasts well if you look after it. I machine wash it in padded bags (bought mine in Lakeland) on a delicate cycle, and hang it to dry outdoors or in a warm bathroom. Never on a radiator or in tumble dryer.

robotbella · 25/02/2024 18:16

One of those Dyson hairdryers. I’d been wanting one for years but couldn’t justify the expense. Then I came into some money and decided to treat myself. It’s not 100% life changing but certainly dries my hair a lot faster and with less damaging heat.

fabio12 · 25/02/2024 18:35

@PerhapsaSillyQuestion heated steering wheel and seats in my new Volvo XC40 - game changer for stiff fingers and sore backs!

FeetLikeFlippers · 25/02/2024 19:16

A Miele washing machine. It’s 14 years old and still works like new. I was lucky enough to inherit some money when I moved 14 years ago so I invested in good quality appliances (in the sales obviously, I’m not stupid!) that would last rather than cheap ones that would need replacing sooner. Definitely the way to go if you can afford the initial layout - you’ll save money in the long run and you’ll have appliances that actually work properly and make your life easier every day.

I love this thread
One of the things I always envy in other people's houses but doesn't seem to be mentioned on here is an American style fridge freezer with ice dispenser. I drink so much more water when it has ice in it but somehow the faff of opening the freezer, getting the ice cubes out & putting them back in the freezer is just too much hassle.
There's just no where in our kitchen (well, entire downstairs) to fit one in and re-modelling the entire house seems a bit excessive.
