I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

sweary response seems a tad over the top on a domestic thing. But how the other half lives/poor planet - and yep I do wonder how many days you might "need" in britain. I have slept for weeks through southern europe virtually african nights with little real problem. Son is going to suffer when he leaves home I think.

We have Air con units in the whole house, including the kitchen, it makes everyone less grumpy in the house, as we can all sleep. Also we have a solar roof so not doing the planet any harm.

Not sure if you are judging or jealous.

@Newchapterbeckons love this idea of getting your whole new wardrobe for the season in one go. (Sorry not a clue how to use quote function on MN!) Can see how you could avoid getting individual items that don't really work with anything else. Do you do a big online shop or go into stores to try on? Not sure my budget would stretch but love the principle.

willWillSmithsmith · 25/02/2024 12:41

I can’t afford to buy any expensive, but worth it, items at the moment but top of my wish list is the iRobot that hoovers and washes the floor.

Good underwear and socks next or M&S
Heated Steering wheel as mentioned (2017 BMW)
Good skin care, prescribed by a proper skin care expert
Quality cotton tops/t shirts
Ninja Airfryer
Wool (high quality) blankets (beds and for lying on the sofa)
Good boots; never cheap, but I’m talking Dune or that level, nothing over the top.
A dehumidifier, the Meaco Arête
Dyson hairdryer

My ethos is….. but cheap buy twice.

forgotmyusername1 · 25/02/2024 12:55

Solar panels and a battery

Went from paying £250 a month for gas and elec to £100 and still ending up £800 in credit at this point so have taken direct debit down to £25

ChampagneLassie · 25/02/2024 12:55

Monceler jacket. Recent new purchase. Although I have quite a high end wardrobe most of it I buy 2nd hand off eBay and vinted for fraction of price. But I love it. It’s chic and so warm and practical. And it also doesn’t feel hot when you’re indoors.

I'd love one when we do our kitchen refurbishment. DH is against it...I just need to try to persuade him that not only do we need one but that it's his idea...

Honestly it’s great!
Cups of tea in seconds, hot water bottles instantly, when u need water for boiling rice, pasta etc it’s already done!
You can also get ones that do boiling water and sparking water x

Better to be a bit sweary as the other poster was than judgemental

With a fractured molar tooth, not bothering with a root canal and going straight to an extraction + dental implant.

Spenny but worth it for the crisps and nuts I can continue to eat without having to endure a nasty and costly root canal procedure nor worry about a failed root canal.

Hot tap and showering area outside for our large, double coated dog. Just bought a power head with a shampoo/conditioner dispenser for the hosepipe. Game changer.
Air fryer - abused on that I shove everything into it. I can make one scone if I fancy it, or chuck dumpling mixture into it 😁

I've been thinking about having this done - can I ask you what you do about insulating the pipes when the weather is really cold? This is what's put me off until now.

My house. I absolutely love it and it makes every aspect of my day to day life happier. Love my little garden, the tiny kitchen, the views from the windows and the blackbirds splashing in the bird bath. Every month on the day when my rent used to go out I do a little dance and count my blessings.

My favourite post so far. Congratulations SomersetTart. I particularly like the thought of your bird bath and splashing therein. 😀
Am working my way gradually through the thread. Very bad for the bank balance as I keep googling the purchases that catch my eye.

Appliance insurance is an absolute rip off.

It's worked well here. They have done speedy and free repairs and I got a free dishwasher replacement when it wasn't repairable. I don't have alot of disposable income so it works better to pay £3-4 a month to know I won't have a situation where I have to suddenly find a lump sum amount to repair or replace an appliance. As per the thread title I'm happy to spend this to make my life easier

SiobhanSharpe · 25/02/2024 13:49

My Miele washer/dryer, it cost £1,000 in 2008 but it's still going strong over 15 years on. The washer is really good, gets grubby trainer socks sparkling clean . The dryer , like all washer/dryers has a lower capacity than stand alone tumble dryers but it has a fantastic 'smoothing' facility which has reduced ironing to almost nothing, for me. (And they cost over 2-1/2 grand now).
My new 'French style' three door fridge freezer, it has a huge capacity but is much less bulky looking than American style FFs and has a filtered, chilled water and ice cube/crushed ice dispenser, all used daily. We love it.

A heated steering wheel!!! What kind of car do you have? I get terribly cold hands when I drive.

We have a heated steering wheel in our ford focus - lovely!

toomuchfaff · 25/02/2024 14:01

We got a set of John Lewis high thread count soft and silky duvet set and sheet as a wedding present (well we got £100 voucher and bought these in the sale and still had to put £80 toward it), it's amazing, i want another but the duvet set is £220 alone...

butterfly0404 · 25/02/2024 14:01

I've just upgraded my 5 year-old Ninja Air Fryer from the dual lid 15 in 1 to a Ninja Speedi and a set of Ninja Stay Sharp knives and scissors - absolutely brilliant.

Also have a 120 bottle tall larder Bosch wine fridge , it's not made any more but I'd be devastated if it breaks down.

Mine’s a Ford. Heated seats, steering wheel and windscreen. Bliss.

Expensive but worth it was my wool duvet.

Also my Macbook, iPad and iPhone. If I’m not using one, it’s the other.

FinaleyDee · 25/02/2024 14:19

When my ex moved out I treated myself to a dishwasher and a Dyson hairdryer to make life easier as a single parent. The time they have given me back were well worth the expense!

Cleaner. And I will say it over and over again.

She is so wonderful. I don't think she has any idea of the help she is. When my son was in hospital she did a special thing in his bedroom with his favourite characters without even me knowing, just to cheer him up. She is a wonderful woman, and I would give up a lot before her.

Ninja duo airfryer

Expensive cat food, eldest has gone from a suddenly, scrawny and lethargic cat to healthly again, and full of kitten energy.

@egowise which cat food is this please? My two have plenty of energy and look healthy but I have an ongoing issue with digestion for one of them (aged 10) and she can't have the usual injection and tablets for IBD, so four years and 17 different foods later the vet and I are still baffled as to what might help. Always up for possible suggestions!

I tried a few, but settled on untamed. Most of the online good cat foods offer cheap trials! I found a full prawn in my cats tin this morning 😆

Totally agree. had one in my old house had it 7 years no issues or it breaking moved into rental while build new house. ficking hate the kettle constantly having to fill it ( I know it's a 1st world problem but drives me mad ) and have had to replace kettle 3 times. last one cost 100e and lately been making a weird noise so am like is this one going now 😫 new house having a boiling tap no questions. considering an incinerator but have heard mixed reports on them
