I received a friend request on Facebook just now. This is definitely someone catfishing me. He comes from Austin, Texas but has pigeon English. He is a Marine Engineer living in Sweden. He does a very dangerous job. He is a nice looking man, he has sent me a photo. He tragically lost his wife 5 years ago due to medical negligence. Am I wrong in stringing him alone?

You’re literally proving @Lassiata point.

I can’t stand the scammers from any country but there’s no need for comments like this.

If you lack the cultural education to know there is so much more about Nigeria just say so. No need to insinuate it’s merely a haven of fraud.

Really tired of this.

"70% of scams originate from Nigeria & Ghana" is not the same as "70% of Nigerians & Ghanaians are scammer".

Mind you, if your grasp on basic logic is that weak, I've got a beautiful house in England to sell you for a tenth of its value. Cash only because I'm being hunted by a terrifying gang and need to disappear. Was thinking of relocating to Ghana. Bank transfer acceptable.

SabrinaThwaite · 26/02/2024 00:45

Next time I get the loft insulation one I’m going to act all shifty and then ask if it’s Doris at no 12 complaining about the smell again, because she’s lying, nothing gets through that amount of polythene and duct tape.

IGNORE BLOCK AND REPORT this weirdo. DON'T GIVE ANYYTHING TO HIM AT ALL. DO NOT REPLY in any shape or form. The so-called ''nice looking man'' is either an AI generated image or he's nicked the photo of a genuine man off the internet somewhere.

It's amazing just how many have dead wives, loads of kids, are dirt poor, work in oil rigs/gas/energy/military/navy/pilots, all from Sweden, India, Africa and have moved to Texas, have absolutely appalling spelling and grammar, can barely ''speak'' English, are desperately lonely, want you to become their new wife and mother of their kids, they can ONLY message you on WhatsApp, Google+ or Telegraph ''as my highly dangerous job in top secret military only allows me to use those sites''. So if that's the case, how comes they're on FB/Twitter/Instagram?!

Then the next thing you know they want you to send or set up for them passports, want you to send money, bank details, want sexual photos of you and want to send them to you.

On Instagram my Profile photo was a hard boiled egg complete with shell as I swap them each month and I had within about 1/2 hour of posting the egg I received a private message from some blokey in Africa saying he likes my photo. ''u look loike a veri gorjus glamrus laidee i luv ur jet blak wavi hare un deep brown eyez wot model agunsy u cume from u have a purfic smile my family wuld b greatly honoured 2 have u as my wif and muthur of my cildrun cume to africa, i will mari u' IT'S AN EGG!

Please, qualitychat, don't waste your time with these freaks, they're all scammers who really don't give a toss for you.

Totally misses the point of OP’s post

I get two frequently:

  1. They've installed a trojan on my computer and can see I'm looking at porn websites and have caught me on camera but if I send them bitcoin they'll make an agreement with me to erase it all- a very polite email telling me not to worry, rest assured he will destroy the original copy if I do this 😆
  2. Some guy in China tells me I have inherited millions from a relative in China whom I didnt know I had and if we agree it keep it secret between us and I send him money for legal fees he'll transfer my massive inheritance forth with (I have the most British name ever so not sure why they cant target people who are actually likely to have relatives native to China).
  3. The usual ones claiming to be from McAffee, EE, Royal Mail, Fedex etc but sent from email addresses like: [email protected]

The third ones remind me of this:

Lol...love "the rest".

They only need a minuscule percentage of the population to believe this stuff for it to be a success, and unfortunately they exist.

Thank you so much for making me laugh out loud. I really needed cheering up.
Somebody should write a book about these wonderful stories.

I've had an instagram follow request from Martin Kemp, Owen Wilson and Robbie Williams this week, which is strange because I don't follow any of the 'real' celeb accounts. Out of interest I accepted Robbie and he instantly responded with 'my dear fan, you are quite the lovely, which of my works would you say is your big fan?' so it's definitely the real RW. When I declined to answer, he followed up with ??? after which I blocked him.

I'd be interested to know what financial help Robbie Williams needs. If you're reading Rob, lend me a tenner til payday and I'll tell which of your works is my big fan.

Robbie would be much more "send me £50 and then you can send me a pic of your tits"

Obv I am old and ugly as I never get propositioned (although Prince Harry wants to be my Facebook friend apparently ). My car tax is frequently overdue -(which is worrying as I don’t drive) One guy wanted to come and quote me for a loft extension as they were installing one further down the street, which was clever as every house in the street has flat rooves. My national insurance number is constantly being compromised in Wales, and there must be a warehouse full to the brim with parcels that can’t be delivered until I pay a tenner. But I am still waiting for a Swedish oil rigger in a Stetson to sweep me off my feet.

Now Prince Harry would be a clever one. Always going on about lack of cash. You just know there would be plenty willing to help him escape the clutches of his scheming wife...

I'll meet you in Ghana. Or anywhere far away really. Our idyllic new life will help me forget my time in the Green Berets. Now I might be a bit financially embarrassed.....

CampsieGlamper · 26/02/2024 08:35

There is a book out by a former Nigerian conman called "How to scam white women" or words to that effect. This makes it clearly racist and given that a lot of the cons against women on the US are supposedly justified as "reparations" the stink of racism against white people and misogyny is strong.

shreknjumps · 26/02/2024 08:52

"I mention my elder son who is in cybersecurity and fraud, attached to Interpol (true, except for the Interpol part, and does travel all over the world for work), and that he will, of course, be checking him out."

Have you told your Son this? He won't be impressed. It's cybersecurity 101 to not engage whatsoever, never mind giving them actual personal information about family members.

anon20 · 26/02/2024 09:12

I've had a few of these on OD. I normally block within a message or 2 as you can tell straight away...just like to catch them out. I speak another language....then one guy proceeds to tell me he is from that country...then messages me in Spanish which wasn't the right country..Google translate no doubt. It was hilarious when I pointed it out and he denied it 🤦😂

anon20 · 26/02/2024 09:14

But I think I'm going to string the next one along just for my amusement and see how far it goes 😂

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 26/02/2024 09:41

When they ring up about the “car accident I’ve recently been in”,I say that yes I was in an accident, in a slow spooky voice , but that I had died , and was speaking from the grave - THEY hang up on me ! 😂

Newsenmum · 26/02/2024 09:44

NamelessNancy · 25/02/2024 20:26

Its deliberate for them to be obvious though. They want to be quickly spotted by people they have a very low chance of scamming. Means they don't waste their time and can move on through the numbers to find those who might be vulnerable.

That's why engaging with them and wasting their time like the OP is actually a pretty good thing to do. Whilst she's stringing them along they are not preying on someone who might actually give them cash.

Yeah it’s actually pretty sick but they know it’s ridiculous, they’re looking for the very vulnerable.

Lelophants · 26/02/2024 09:50

My poor mum who’s nearly 70 and a widow got a guy telling her he’d seen her naked sex tape and he needs money to destroy it. 😂 Luckily she is savvy enough to know it was a scam, but she still worried for a minute!

Newsenmum · 26/02/2024 09:54

shreknjumps · 24/02/2024 01:37

And this thread shows exactly how these scams end up working 😒. Never reply, for fucks sake.

I wonder why I bother with my actual job at times

How is it working?

Facing40andfrazzled · 26/02/2024 10:04

I had Keanu Reeves and George Clooney vying for me … I played along for a few days then told them I found out my friend was messaging them as well but not to worry about our love as I had dealt with her and not to worry because the foundations had been poured so the body was untraceable…

Tamrastarr · 26/02/2024 10:31

Wife is always dead, kids are always in boarding school. I like to get the sex of the child wrong now and again, they rarely notice, but that's probably because they are working so hard as a military surgeon, and the child is away a lot.

I had one who used the pic of a very handsome, gay, older model. When I pointed out that his (REAL) profile said he was gay, he got extremely offended with me!! LOL

Barney60 · 26/02/2024 11:35

Also had an Austin contact me but he used Paul Hollywoods photo😜

Maerchentante · 26/02/2024 12:01

About 20 years ago, my maternal grandmother was told that there was an inheritance case for which she would have to pay x amount of Euro, so the lawyers could fight her case.

She told me when she said that she didn't have that money, could I lend her some. I left her a total of €200 and went shopping for her. Of course, that triggered calls for more money which I declined.

The funny thing was, that there were really some inheritance issues from when my aunt and then two years later her husband died.
They had had a will where they left a lot to my sister and which also stated that my grandmother should get her debts to my aunt forgiven. These were for repairs to the house and stuff like that. Though by the time they died not much in money or possessions was left
One of my uncles decided that he had invested so much time (haha) that he deserved to get everything left. We didn't fight it as a) there wasn't much and b) we simply did not have the money to.

Cue my other uncle preying on his mother telling her the "inheritance" scam sob story, which she believed because poor Chris would never lie (again haha).
He ended up scamming her of thousands, he had form for that.
Took me five years, but I got my money back and then cut all contact.

From what I heard my uncle was eventually convicted for scamming people and spent some time inside. Wouldn't surprise me if he is back to his old ways.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/02/2024 12:24

All those posters who leap on to say 'this is clearly a SCAM, I've had it, don't send him any money!' are annoying me. Do they not read the OP properly? This is clearly a poster who knows EXACTLY what she's doing and she's not 'falling for a scam'. Tch.

I'm just over 70, wonder if my past is like your DM's? Being young in the early 1970s was a lot of funBlush
So perhaps she had good cause to pause for a minute, worryingWink Probably best not to ask her, though...

Is that Artie, or Arty? 😉
