I am being catfished right now!

I received a friend request on Facebook just now. This is definitely someone catfishing me. He comes from Austin, Texas but has pigeon English. He is a Marine Engineer living in Sweden. He does a very dangerous job. He is a nice looking man, he has sent me a photo. He tragically lost his wife 5 years ago due to medical negligence. Am I wrong in stringing him alone?

@Slanabhaile Oh I totally agree that the problem isn't the people sending these messages and making these calls, it's the gangs that use violence and slavery. But engaging with one doesn't do anything other than make them have to work longer to meet their targets for the day.

(I used to get lots of scam calls about "the accident I had recently". I used to get very excited, "OH YES! My god it was awful!" They would ask me for my version of what had happened and I'd say, "You do mean the one with the flaming haystack and runaway giraffe, don't you?" Strangely they would usually hang up after that).

I get loads of them every day and they are all Nigerian.

Do a reverse image search on the profile photo and you'll find it's a Turkish doctor or similar.

San Antonio is the military base- base camp for all the USA military in training and close to Austin. Ask him about San Antonio

He completely avoided my questions and said "that's nice". If someone was genuine they would be delighted that you knew their home town.

Trouble is I think they mostly get rather boring. They don't speak good enough English so it's a very one sided conversation with them saying 'You're beautiful I love you I want to marry you'. They don't even keep their story straight as to how many kids/what gender kids they have or notice if you totally change your story, mostly as I assume it's several people but also because their English is poor.

One of the guys did actually call me on Google hangouts - I had some missed calls and I assumed it was all a front to say they had tried but they had a bad connection but then he actually called, I was embarrassed for him - he spent 2 minutes saying 'I love you I love you' and making kissing sounds and was very obviously not from the United States. I asked him about his accent but he didn't even understand the question.

I'm not sure how it's supposed to work, I can only assume maybe it works if you find a lonely woman who also has very poor English and doesn't know Anglo accents, but I'm then not sure how they get money out of anyone because they're going to have a hard time explaining that. 😑

His son is in Boarding School ha ha. He only has a few weeks left to work in Sweden.

I had this. I turned it round and said I'd love to meet him, could he just send me his bank card details front and back? Then said I couldn't wait to marry as I was poor and needed the stability. Never heard from him again. Rude!

That's copied and pasted. He speak German, Swedish, English and whatever language he really speaks. I have just sent him a message in German.
