Airbnb host, was I wrong?

I had a guest stay at my airbnb. He was a bit difficult but one area of contention. Was I wrong?
He WhatsApp'd messaged me (which I hate as he should be using airbnb platform unless it's an emergency but anyway) to say there are not enough mugs and glasses as there are 6 of them. The apartment does sleep 6, in 3 double beds. I asked him what was there and he replied only 5 wine glasses and 4 mugs. I apologised and said some must have been broken and I will get some to him asap in the morning. (He messaged at midnight)
I went out and bought replacements, rung the door bell a few times, there was no answer, so I used my key to put in the missing mugs and glasses.
I then get phone calls and messages later that night furious that I entered my airbnb apartment when he was not in to replace the missing items.
Things like this have happened in the past and guests have never had an issue.
Was I wrong?

Everybody going on about what if he was in the shower or having sex. There were 6 of them are they all in the shower. She popped by and put the items in the property. Would take seconds to put them inside the front door and leave. This would not have bothered me at all. What a fuss about nothing. He asked for more and she provided.

If I asked someone to deliver something for me then yeah fine, she's doing them a favour.

A favour??? You mean providing things that should have been in the property in the first place! That's not a favour! It's putting right their mistake!!

But presumably if there had been just one or two people staying, she'd still have let herself in...

Islandgirl68 · 26/02/2024 23:13

If there were only one or 2 people, there would not have been a shortage, no message to owner and no need for owner to pop by with items.

It's not a fuss about nothing it's a clear breach of Airbnb rules, how is whether you would be bothered at all relevant?

Would your valid concern about something be invalidated by the fact that a random person wasn't concerned? That would be nonsense

WandaWonder · 27/02/2024 10:08

If it sleeps 6 or any number have enough for that amount of people

It is just basic common-sense really

It's a breach of the airbnb rules! It's really as simple as that!

And yet poster after poster keeps repeating that they wouldn't mind or the man is making too much fuss, it couldn't be simpler to understand

But the guest in question DID mind, so the fact that it was against the rules is highly relevant!

puzzledout · 27/02/2024 13:46

@shoppingshamed but that's totally irrelevant, because they hadn't paid to or stayed at the house!

And OP is an airbnb host and doesn't even know the rules, lots of people have said the OP is wrong

So

  1. She broke her own rules
  2. She upset her guests
  3. They had the right to be upset, because of no 1!

Hope that helps.

Exactly, it's simple to understand that the man was right and the OP was wrong

Islandgirl68 · 27/02/2024 15:14

It is a fuss, he asked for items, she delivered. All sorted, I am sure she did not enter and have a nosey in all the rooms. She probably was in literally seconds.

QuestionableMouse · 27/02/2024 15:25

I personally wouldn't have cared about you coming in to drop stuff off as long as you didn't linger.

Still irrelevant, she broke Airbnb rules, you can make up whatever spurious justification you like but it won't change the facts

The OP acknowledged long ago that shed been wrong to enter without agreement, it's baffling to me that posters are somehow unable to understand Airbnb ts and cs

Guide grief I understand t&Cs, he is lucky he didn't have the owner my kids had in Italy the women was in and out daily, when they were not in. It would not have bothered me if she popped things in the door that would take seconds, if we had requested them.

He shouldn't have had to request the items!

Italian woman is irrelevant.

Islandgirl68 · 28/02/2024 10:55

Yes you are right, they should have had enough stuff, but the owner has rectified and learnt that she needs more stuff and will make sure that it is properly stocked. The Italian women is relevant. People have been banging on about t&Cs, popping things in the door for a few seconds compared to letting yourself in daily is a comparison and is relevant as also airbnb.

Ts&cs don't only apply to certain or arbitrary amounts of time though. It's a blanket 'no access without prior agreement' principle, whether it's someone coming in every day or as a one-off.
An Airbnb I stayed in had a cleaner who came in daily. We were told this in advance, and also told what time she could be expected. We also had a minor issue with the house and contacted the host. They asked if they could pop in that afternoon to sort it; we said we'd be out but yes, please do come in. The key is knowing about it/agreeing to it.
This isn't 'banging on' Hmm, it's really basic stuff.

Islandgirl68 · 28/02/2024 20:38

Yes I know, it is not rocket science I know that is the way it works. The op has learnt a lesson and taken on board what people are saying. She thought she was doing as they requested and dropping off the items. It has been a learning curve for them and they have learnt from their mistake.

MarkWithaC · 29/02/2024 09:15

So if you know how it works why did you try to make out that someone popping in was not the same as someone coming in and out regularly? Hmm

Islandgirl68 · 29/02/2024 17:32

Because it is not the same. Someone opening the door chucking in the items that were requested and leaving is not the same as someone coming in daily and having a good walk around the property checking what you are up too.

Both* are against the t&cs! Both* break the rules.

What don't you understand, it's a rule that's been broken and the guests are unhappy. You might not have been, but they were abd the rules state it's not allowed.

Thank you! I came on wondering how to explain this any more clearly, but you've done a good job.
