To be angry that Scarlet Blake is being called a woman.

Scarlet Blake has been found guilty of murder. He also tortured and killed a cat.

He is not a woman.

This shouldn't be reported as a woman's crime.

How many people think that crime stats should be recorded by sex, not gender?

By sex (obviously) but might be useful to have some record of 'gender identity'. Obviously that's harder to do reliably as, unlike sex, 'gender identity' isn't a simple binary but there are stats on demographics such a religion and ethnicity so there's obviously ability to collect and analyse extra information.

There is also the additional issue that 'gender' is fluid and can be changed. It is an unreliable variable because it can only reflect the the gender someone identified as at the time of conviction. They could have been a different gender when they committed the crime and that would not be recorded. And none of it is verifiable.

It would be useful to have the information, but I think it could also be meaningless in a way too.

Froodwithatowel · 25/02/2024 13:45

You'd think even if male people with TQ+ identities didn't know what it felt like to be a woman they'd have the basic empathy and interest in other people's needs, feelings, inclusion, privacy and dignity that they value so highly for themselves. And would have the capacity to care about women's voices and needs and look for compromises that worked for all.

WomaninBoots · 25/02/2024 13:56

Decent, honest people don't take things that were never meant for them.

A male person "identifying" as a woman and using OUR spaces and OUR sporting categories for a self-focussed reason, even if that reason is genuinely a bit tragic, is not a decent and honest person.

So people who start handwringing about their "simply lovely" transwomen pal being "sooooo lovely and unassuming and not dangerous at all"... well you're just wrong. He goes in the women's loo? No sorry, your "lovely" friends is a fucking selfish twunt.

WomaninBoots · 25/02/2024 13:58

You might imply that I don't think the reasons are genuinely even a little bit tragic very often.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/02/2024 15:33

You would, wouldn't you. But I think many of them are pathologically lacking in empathy.

Froodwithatowel · 25/02/2024 16:06

And yet the hair flipping, failure to map read, suddenly losing the ability to put out bins (your wife has to then do it) and crying a lot and eating chocolate once a month has been got down pat.

I thought compassion, empathy and thoughtfulness for others were feminine gender things. It's odd how it works.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/02/2024 16:07

Yes, exactly Frood.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2024 19:30

Similar may apply to religion - there, looking at changes may be illuminating in various ways.

He is a he, not a they he is a man - lucky you if you can't see why it matters.

Even @Pinkfrlls can't bring him/her/they self to actually call "Scarlet" she. I guess even he/she/they feel a tiny bit of cognitive dissonance about "correct" pronouns

Crankywiddershins · 26/02/2024 11:04

I wouldn't be surprised if the cat identity is plan b in case plan a (women's prison) fails. Makes it easier to get moved to psychiatric wing.

Scarlet will be sentenced at 2.15 today. Victim statements and prosectution submissions were made this morning.

Prosectuion argue it was a sexually motivated killing.

'Ms Morgan KC said: "The overall depravity of the defendant's conduct means the court can place it in a [higher category].
"If the court was against us, we would respectively submit that the sexual motivation and gratification are a significant aggravating feature.
"We submit that the language then that the court may wish to focus on is whether the seriousness of the murder can be construed as particularly high."'

'It is the prosecution's case the murder was a 'murder involving sexual conduct', this is due to evidence about Blake using strangulation on herself and on others for 'sexual gratification'.
"The acts were linked to the inherent link of death," she said. "This is linked to the defendant's broader interest in violence, harm and death.
"The sexual gratification drawn from discussing such events with others. The defendant in her own words described the events of the killing being hot.
"The defendant derived obvious sexual gratification throughout the course of the cat-killing video.
"She subsequently described those events as sexual pleasure in relaying the events with Evie Brockman.
"All that evidence clearly establishes a sexual motivation for the killing. Plainly after the event, the defendant gains sexual gratification from the murder."'

Defence argues it was a 'straightforward' murder.

'"The court has to be satisfied that one or the other or both took place. But none of those actions, on the face of it, are sexual.
"It's a simple, straightforward - if I can put it that way - killing."'

'Straightforward' killing? I feel for the family and friends of Jorge, I really do. The fiasco that Wang is creating, and the do-gooders who seek to defend Wang, must be adding to their grief.

No mention of him being a man in today's Oxford Mail live reporting.

Its a complete disgrace.

ArabellaScott · 26/02/2024 14:35

Judge is referencing it, though.

'"You adopted the persona of a cat. You talked about the difficulties to have had of transitioning since childhood to live as a woman and your troubled relationship with your parents.
"All of this was part of an elaborate attempt to rationalise what you have done and shift responsibility to others.
"It is not the fault of a society that didn't accept you, it was not the fault of your parents.
"The decision to kill was entirely yours."'

That's good. Just infuriating how the mangling of language might lead people to think this was a female crime.

Louise Tickle has written to Kath Viner of the Guardian to complain about their article. It's an excellent read.

I wonder when the cat’s family realised why their cat had disappeared. Presumably someone had to inform them, when the videos and trophies were found.

ManwholikesBeer · 26/02/2024 15:19

I think you have a fair point , I also think its an unimportant issue in this particular conversation. When the real point is the heinous murder a young man and the torture and mutalation of a living creature just for Jollies, I will be interested to see if this meat sack will be sent to a male or female prison, I am a libitarian I have no real phillisophical problem with poeple being what they want to be or for that matter how they identify, I also think if you avail your self of those freedoms. You have a duty to understand you have a to follow the law and an eqaul duty to be mindfull of poeple who are biologicly female or male thats just simple decency we all make concessions in life.

ArabellaScott · 26/02/2024 15:20

It's male violence. It's a lie that this man is a woman. It matters.
