I’m 50+ and only just really appreciating Fleetwood Mac!

The dynamics of the band, the turmoil, the bloody fantastic songwriting that was so personal but made them such an awesome group!

Growing up I didn’t really know about Fleetwood Mac until the mid 80’s, and I think the fact that they had different lead singers within the band, involved in their various hits, during the 80’s I suppose this confused me and when listening on the radio, thought I was listening to a different band when they had a hit!

Just wanted to show my appreciation to them in a AIBU thread, just because 😆

I watched a documentary a while ago about them and tbh was totally floored! I missed out on them during my youth and subsequent grunge rock 90’s+ moment! I was never really into them back then….

How bloody awesome were/are they!

Also incredibly sad about Christine McVie ❤️

I came to them late too (same age as OP) - but in my late 40s. Despite owning Tango ITN in the 80s. Truly love them and didn’t know much about them before. Would love to have seen them live.

So sad about Christine McVie too - took a little trip to see her old house down in Wickhambreaux a few months ago.

Also check out Bread and Creedence Clearwater Revival for bands you might have missed

I'm the same as you, OP. Am in my late 40s and they were not on my radar growing up despite my parents owning Rumours, and obviously a lot of their songs made their way into my head without me being aware it was them. I think I was put off by a) that Reynolds Girls (?) song Id Rather Jack (!) and b/ Mick's appearance on the Brits that time , both of which made me feel they were past their time.

But in the last few years I've got really into their music, bought the albums, watched live shows etc. I was at a sixth form Battle of the Bands last week and two of the young bands did Fleetwood Mac songs, one murdered The Chain and one Go Your Own Way.

Oh yes, I remember Mick and Sam Fox getting slated and that song! 😆

@beguilingeyes you've got good taste!!

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2024 11:27

I know many artists and sound guys who had 'a thing' with Stevie- she was a bit of a goer!! lol

AmaryllisChorus · 22/02/2024 11:40

Watch this version of The Chain, live, sung when they were breaking up. The way they stare at each other... Stevie Nicks howls like a wild animal and Buckingham looks like he might explode. I've never heard a better version of it.

WestwardHo1 · 22/02/2024 11:42

I am a similar age and my parents were total squares so I didn't hear FM as a kid. But just recently I have been obsessed with them. I just love the way Mick's drumming drives some of the songs.

WestwardHo1 · 22/02/2024 11:51

Am also in total awe of Stevie Nicks' hair. We pay £££s NOT to have frizz like that and yet she completely rocks it

TruJay · 22/02/2024 11:54

Oh I love Fleetwood Mac, my uncle gave me his old Walkman and some cds and Tango in the night was amongst them. I was 7 and have listened to and loved them ever since.

Edited

That performance always gives me goospimples. The sheer emotion is just ..wow.

The end is quite funny tho. To me it's a showdown from LB to Mick with Mick looking everywhere but forward, steadfastly refusing to make any eye contact with LB.

Is this when LB found out about Stevie and Mick?

There's some real pain and fury there.

Strokethefurrywall · 22/02/2024 12:33

I saw them live at Earls Court in late 90s/early 2000s and oh my god they were incredible. Still one of the greatest gigs I've ever been to.

They sounded exactly like the live album recording and it was 2 hours of just brilliant showmanship. Stevie Nicks has my ♥️♥️♥️

FairyWren7 · 22/02/2024 12:57

Isn’t that funny. I’ve been obsessed with the song Landslide for the last few weeks.

Always loved Rumours. Fantastic album, parents played it loads when I was little. Everywhere is one of those videos that I remember from childhood. I’d have loved to have seen them live.

NotSorry · 22/02/2024 13:15

Love Fleetwood Mac - like a PP was lucky enough to see them live in 2019. Also have seen Stevie live a few times. Check out the albums earlier than Rumours, some wonderful songs on those too. Agree about the Eagles and Bread too. OP YANBU

OMG, the dramzs... Just a brilliant group.

Any documentary on them is brilliant. Have you seen this?

I'd rather Jack than Fleetwood Mac 🤣🤣 I still remember that now! I was the same, my dad listened to them so they were NOT cool!

It wasn't really until my 20s that I got back into Tango in the Night etc. I love Stevie Nicks voice and of course all my favourite songs are the ones she wrote/sings.

Silver Springs is amazing. It has that anger of a lover scorned while also being so vulnerable. Love it!

What about Peter Green!?
No mention of the genius who penned Man Of The World.

Mentioned upthread no?

Rhythmisadancer · 22/02/2024 14:32

similar age here, I had a young dad who was into punk and more bluesy rock and I was more into indie. When he had a girlfriend sort of half way between our ages FM were her thing, and felt a bit square to me - but since watching Daisy and the 6 w teenage DD I have found myself mysteriously drawn to Fleetwood Mac, and really getting into them after all this time! Can anyone say what / where this good documentary can be found?

Saladcreamdreams · 22/02/2024 14:34

I love wafting around my kitchen to Gypsy , LOVE Fleetwood Mac ❤

MyNameIsBatty · 22/02/2024 14:36

I was born in the 80s but inherited the love for the Mac from parents who used to play their albums in the car when i was a child. I was lucky enough to see Stevie Nicks supporting Tom Petty in Hyde Park and then Fleetwood Mac at Wembley a few years ago, so good! I also like Stevie Nicks solo work.

greengreengrass25 · 22/02/2024 14:38

Absolutely love them

Dc also appreciate them especially Rumours album

Wibblebits · 22/02/2024 14:39

I suggest you try the band Toto. Absolutely amazing soo much talent in their songwriting and performances. Whenever I discover a new band i get their whole discography and listen to everything. The songs that make bands famous are rarely their best work and you find some hidden gems that you can never stop listening to! If you like horror and Stevie nicks try the TV show American horror story.

Similar age and feel the same way about Supertramp.

Love "take the long way home"

Only heard recently on Johnny Walker

Wibblebits · 22/02/2024 14:42

Yeah Stevie nicks solo albums are also absolutely amazing definitely worth a listen for any Fleetwood Mac fan. She's soo talented

BigFluffyHoodie · 22/02/2024 14:43

Edge Of Seventeen... love it

LouisCatorze · 22/02/2024 14:44

'Tusk' was a particularly great album. I've only recently discovered 'Landslide' which has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever.
