I’m 50+ and only just really appreciating Fleetwood Mac!

The dynamics of the band, the turmoil, the bloody fantastic songwriting that was so personal but made them such an awesome group!

Growing up I didn’t really know about Fleetwood Mac until the mid 80’s, and I think the fact that they had different lead singers within the band, involved in their various hits, during the 80’s I suppose this confused me and when listening on the radio, thought I was listening to a different band when they had a hit!

Just wanted to show my appreciation to them in a AIBU thread, just because 😆

I watched a documentary a while ago about them and tbh was totally floored! I missed out on them during my youth and subsequent grunge rock 90’s+ moment! I was never really into them back then….

How bloody awesome were/are they!

Also incredibly sad about Christine McVie ❤️

Similar age and feel the same way about Supertramp.

There's a tribute band called 'Rumours of Fleetwood Mac' who tour all over the world every year and are fantastic! Mick Fleetwood endorses them with a voice over at the beginning.

I would love to have watched the real Fleetwood Mac but these are they next best thing, I'd highly recommend. They cover the early Peter Green stuff to all the classics.

Towards the end, wow! Emotional.

I'm 34 so they aren't really my 'generation' music but they are my favourite ever band. I was lucky enough to watch them live at Wembley in 2019. Stevie Nicks is just my absolute idol.

PinkPondQueen · 22/02/2024 07:13

One of the best bands ever. If you haven't already seen it watch The Dance filmed in 1997 - I think the songs recorded at this gig are even better than the original versions, particularly 'Go Your Own Way'. 'I'm So Afraid' is also mindblowing. Lindsey Buckingham has to be one of the most talented guitarists i've ever seen, he's a joy to watch!

Isn’t it just, but also Mick living his best life on the drums and being terribly grateful it’s not directed at him! 🤣

Truly one of the best bands of all time.
When I watched this I 100% knew that my dna frequency is in 'Dreams'.

Fleetwood Mac are amazing, the music accompanies anything and there are so many breathtaking songs. However, I'm sorry but I watched the video and it's a right load of old bollocks.

SilverSimca · 22/02/2024 07:41

I'm the same as you, OP. Am in my late 40s and they were not on my radar growing up despite my parents owning Rumours, and obviously a lot of their songs made their way into my head without me being aware it was them. I think I was put off by a) that Reynolds Girls (?) song Id Rather Jack (!) and b/ Mick's appearance on the Brits that time , both of which made me feel they were past their time.

But in the last few years I've got really into their music, bought the albums, watched live shows etc. I was at a sixth form Battle of the Bands last week and two of the young bands did Fleetwood Mac songs, one murdered The Chain and one Go Your Own Way.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 22/02/2024 07:47

Lindsey Buckingham is amazing, he doesn't get enough credit. I saw someone on YouTube trying to play Never Going Back Again and explaining how difficult the guitar part is, LB makes it look so easy. It always blows my mind when someone can play and sing at the same time.

Maireas · 22/02/2024 07:49

They are brilliant. " Rumours" was the album of my university days, back in the early 80s.
Unrivalled.
My adult DC love them as well!

Bemyclementine · 22/02/2024 08:45

I stayed up far too late listening to Fleetwood Mac songs on YouTube!

mrandmrsrobinson · 22/02/2024 09:08

Try listening to The Eagles OP. Some really good harmonious stuff

Bemyclementine · 22/02/2024 10:04

@mrandmrsrobinson love the Eagles too, also as a result of my parents influence.

this performance where they’re off their tits and so full of fury and anger. Amazing.

Absolutely love this! The raw emotion when they’re singing to each other!

Fabulous band - and I work in the business. How they wrote and performed those great songs whilst having very dysfunctional relationships with each other- god only knows- same goes for Abba

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2024 10:19

Have to be honest though Tango in the night is in my opinion better album!!

Rumours is odd that it opens with the weakest track on the album

HemlockSoup · 22/02/2024 10:27

I think Gypsy is my favourite song of theirs. Or Landslide.

It’s funny to see Fleetwood Mac being fashionable in 2024. In the 80s, when they were having some big hits, they were obviously popular but they were also the furthest possible thing from cool.

beguilingeyes · 22/02/2024 10:29

Rumours is pretty much a perfect album, for me. I think I bought it when it came out #oldperson. Had a little cry when Christine died, hers was my favourite voice.
I saw a singer a while ago announce that she was going to play an Eva Cassidy song and did Songbird. I was fewmin.
Why isn't the Buckingham/Nicks album available on CD?
The 70s was amazing for music. Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor. Steely Dan are beyond amazing.
I remember a few people at work when Graceland came out and they thought it was the first record that Paul Simon had ever made :/

mondaytosunday · 22/02/2024 10:30

Well... I do like their music but their performance was one of the worst concerts I ever went to!

RampantIvy · 22/02/2024 10:33

Thedogscollar · 22/02/2024 00:23

One of the best and most talented bands ever to walk this earth.

Yes, I agree.
I have always been a fan.

I have an everlasting memory of clearing up after a NYE party one snowy new year's day while Rumours blasted out all over the house. Happy days.

BBC4 did a whole evening devoted to them a while back. I had a nostalgic evening watching it.

jay55 · 22/02/2024 10:35

I went to see Stevie Nicks a couple of years ago, she was incredible and as it was in a new arena, my seat didn't exist and I got moved from the nosebleeds to floor seats. Was amazing.
