TO THINK THERE'S A LOCH NESS MONSTER

I really believe there's something undiscovered in the 23 mile pitch black Loch, Too many people have seen SOMETHING. Over 1000 sightings. Okay dome could be the mind, tricks of the light, logs, seals etc but surely not all. No it can't be a plesiosaur as the loch is only 10,000 years old and they died out millions of years ago. Sonar and DNA proved there isn't one but doesn't it connect to the sea? So it could come and go and not be in there permanently. Adrian Shine who has camped there 40 years and Jeremy Wade both think it's a huge Greenland shark. Giant eel 20ft long? The most dna found was from eels.

Took the dc there a couple of years ago. The information centre is absolutely fascinating.. There is feel of mystery and hope there.. Sadly didn't see anything but I do believe there is something there...

It's the tourist boards' job to make it all mysterious and plausible though - that's how they make all their money!

When I was aged about 7yrs old, I had two ambitions. One was to see the 1999 eclipse (I did, baby in tow), the second was to go to Loch Ness. Haven't made it yet!

There's obviously a funny old thing going on in that Loch. I did a school project on it when I was 11 🤔

Some sonar boats have traced the whole Loch and found unexplained things. I will get up there one day, just because it was on my 7yr old bucket list!

I saw the eclipse too. True. some sonar scans have shown anomalies that are just dismissed as large shoals of fish or tricks with the light but who knows.

For me, too many people have seen something.

I’ve actually caught a glimpse of her.

Loopytiles · 21/02/2024 18:39

Spent lots of time there and love it, but the ‘sightings’ are down to human psychology, social dynamics and economics!

Loopytiles · 21/02/2024 18:40

number of people experiencing things, or saying they have, isn’t evidence.

Squirrelsnut · 21/02/2024 18:42

I agree with a pp, we need some mystery in the world. Imagine if they captured Nessie. Awful.

TheBeesBollox · 21/02/2024 18:42

Cushionsandcaramel · 21/02/2024 18:34

Of course Nessie exists!

Along with haggises that roam the Scottish hills.

I think the plural is just haggis.
Either way, lovely to see them back in the hills. Part of the rewilding program in the Highlands.

sprigatito · 21/02/2024 18:26

I hope there is, and I hope we never find out for sure! Life needs a little mystery here and there.

Never thought of it this way but you are absolutely right and worded it so well.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 21/02/2024 18:35

Sorry but a lot of rubbish!

Am not being rude but would you go swimming in the middle of the loch?

We're going to need more details, and preferably a diagram!

Windy23 · 21/02/2024 18:44

I've been many times, never seen anything. Would like to believe but I'm dubious.

I saw an interesting TV programme a couple of weeks ago about a boat that crashed on Loch Ness while trying to break a speed record or something. Similar to Donald Campbell's crash on Coniston Water. They came to the conclusion that wake from another boat caused it. Most people hadn't believed that was possible because there were no other boats in the vicinity. Turns out the unusual topography of Loch Ness (long, narrow, deep, steep sides) allows wake from boats to travel for miles without dissipating. They said that was probably the explanation for a lot of Nessie sightings as the wake looks like humps.

Loopytiles · 21/02/2024 18:44

No, it’s damn cold, deep and dark so (sadly) is presumably unsafe for wild swimming!

have swum in the shallow bits as a DC: bloody freezing!

BreakfastAtMimis · 21/02/2024 18:28

Yeah I thought so too...when I was 10 years old!

Me too
We drove the entire (mostly) length Loch Ness , and I was convinced we see it. .... we didn't.

Robotik · 21/02/2024 18:45

I think humans are stupid to think we know everything that exists. There must be hundreds if not thousands of things in the world that we humans don’t know about. And just because you’ve not seen it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

blackbird77 · 21/02/2024 18:47

Me and an ex boyfriend were on a romantic weekend away in Loch Ness about a decade ago and we did one of those evening boat tours. I 100% locked eyes with it. I know what I saw! Nobody believed me. Hope to be vindicated someday.

Tempnamechng · 21/02/2024 18:48

I like to think there is something in there. I love local myths and mysteries.

Meh 20meters deep or 200 meters deep you’re fucked either way…. As for dark, why do you need to see? Unless you’re worried about Nessie sneaking up on you? 🤣🤣🤣

thebillcollector · 21/02/2024 18:50

From an aerial view of the topography, Scotland is pretty much cut in half by Lock Ness and Loch Lochy. The land lies very low at that point.

I've always wondered if there's a deep underground water system running underneath this transect of Scotland that has an outlet to the North Sea, deep on the ocean bed, way, way beyond Moray Firth and Tarbat Ness lighthouse, and that large deep sea creatures may come and go occasionally via this underground water system when seeking refuge.

The land certainly looks like it's been carved out by some big geological event.

Any geologists out there that can shed any light?

SherrieElmer · 21/02/2024 18:50

Not sure I would use the term unreasonable to describe you. Gullible, more like.

Pootle40 · 21/02/2024 18:50

I'm Scottish. Sorry it's a hoax.

Friedchickenrocks · 21/02/2024 18:51

In the 1880's a ship sank and they sent a diver down. He came up as white as a sheet and never entered water again. He said he'd seen an enormous creature, like a frog, with big eyes, on a ledge near the boat. He said it was the scariest thing he'd ever seen. Experts have said maybe it was a giant salamander. Some experts think Nessie is a salamander.

Maybe she was away hunting wild haggis/haggises/haggi

I've been a couple of times, it's absolutely stunning and I want to believe (X-Files music) but didn't see anything. My son says he did when we were on the water, but he was 7 and high on ice-cream and fresh from the visitor centre!

I absolutely love all the lore around it and other similar 'mysteries' like the Bermuda Triangle, spontaneous human combustion, Borley Rectory, Bigfoot, Yetis etc. and slightly more plausible stuff like big cat sightings. But I have yet to see anything to make me a believer. Sometimes I want to...sometimes, like when I'm walking alone in the dark, I really don't! But I never say never...love the weirdness!

'By the Silver Water of lake Champlain' is a beautiful and heartbreaking short story about a lake monster. Thoroughly recommend. Nessie is the G.O.A.T but most big lakes have their own legends too.
