My husband thinks breastfeeding women should be more classy

He thinks if you are feeding, do not do it in the centre of a food court , try to go to the edges. Choose your seat around the fringe. Preferably near a potted plant. Choose to be discreet. Do not make a spectacle of yourself ( in Parliament),
In a restaurant, don't sit in the middle.
Women should show more discretion and decorum.

Normally a nice man? Who only holds this one, singular, misogynistic thought?
Doubt it.

DrSeuss · 21/02/2024 12:50

What are his thoughts on top shelf magazines or Page 3? Can they be read openly?

PermanentTemporary · 21/02/2024 12:52

Oh dear.

Everyone has blind spots. Maybe he's just stuck on being so disgusted by all politicians that he can't switch to seeing them as human. I've noticed this with dp and I lately, we are generally quite cheerful but when we discuss politics we become nonstop moaners and the air turns blue. We would never normally talk about people like that.

Maybe take some sort of positive political action? Deliver leaflets hand in hand? Join a committee?

Is this the tip of the husband-turning-into-a-middle-aged-dickwad-iceberg, OP?

This is a distinct possibility. Just turned 53yo, and is a grumpy pain in the arse. Also swears from morning to night and spends most of his days gaming. He does help with our young son ( pick up and drop offs) and the gardening if I complain for about an hour( otherwise I do it all). Cooks occasionally and shops with a list I give him . Gah , he;s not sounding great is he. He does have redeeming points.

CryptoFascist · 21/02/2024 12:53

when he breastfeeds he can choose to do all that.

queenMab99 · 21/02/2024 12:53

Your husband should have more class, and keep his dated opinions to himself.
You should have more class, than to broadcast the fact that you are married to a narrow minded plonker

gamerchick · 21/02/2024 12:49

Right. I'm thinking kink. Especially after the one last night that went on for pages.

Of course people happily oblige 🙄

I didn't see that thread, and MN can assure that I am a long time member.

Does he make this face when he sees a breastfeeding mother

This , sadly , may be true. I didn't mean to though. It just creeps up on you.

Your husband can get in the bin. What a tool.

Dreamy. Not sure why you think any of us should care what your shit bloke thinks or says?
Do you not want better from life? A thick, swearing gamer 😍😍😍

Who gives a flying fuck what your husband thinks 🤔

Beat me to it.

ZebraPensAreLife · 21/02/2024 12:58

I agree with him that the UK Parliament needs more decorum.

Not because of breastfeeding mothers, though.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 21/02/2024 12:24

I absolutely agree, natural it is but it gives me the absolute heave and my elderly mum gets embarrassed. It’s such a special part of bonding it does seem weird to me woman aren’t more discreet. I appreciate me and DM and your DH are in the minority though.

Why would she be embarrassed? My dad is 74 and worked in a place where women breast fed
He would just offer a hot drink and biscuits, and a private room only if they preferred or tell them to sit wherever they were comfy

OK. Sorry for bothering you. I was a bit shocked and was asking for opinions.

Why does it give you the heave and your mum needs to get over it - her being elderly is irrelevant, breastfeeding is not a new phenomenon.

Xenoi24 · 21/02/2024 13:00

He does help with our young son ( pick up and drop offs)

Are you saying that's all he does with your young son??

And he does nothing around the house - except gardening after youve been forced to nag him.

Spends time gaming instead of doing the above.

You have bigger issues than his ridiculous opinions on breast feeding.

fivestarreview · 21/02/2024 13:01

Another typical mumsnet thread. No nuance in any replies.

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 21/02/2024 13:02

In some cases there seems to be a defiance in stance/position and location of breastfeeding in public. Kind of see where your DH is coming from tbh. I say that as a breastfeeding mother

AdoraBell · 21/02/2024 13:02

I always felt uncomfortable breast feeding in public, but, your DH can take his attitude and fuck right off.

He is unreasonable. As he thinks women can be more classy he could also think that men can be more educated about breast feeding.

From the sounds of it, you have more problems on your plate than your husband's daft opinions on breastfeeding OP.

Xenoi24 · 21/02/2024 13:04

It’s such a special part of bonding it does seem weird to me woman aren’t more discreet.

It might be a special part of bonding but it's also a very ordinary, repetitive, practical, functional thing ... That needs done.

So no point in putting it in airy fairy land .... And women all over the world do it constantly and don't have to be "discrete".

Ah the UK.

Tits on page 3 of the leading tabloid newspapers .. fine.

Tits in titty bars for stag do's and guys nights out - fine.

Tits being used for their main purpose ..."fucking hell, put those away or be more discrete ... Have some decorum and class!!!!"

ThankGoditsChristmas · 21/02/2024 13:04

I mean in fairness there is nothing wrong with a bit of discretion. I was a breastfeeding mum and would always try to find a quiet spot so I wasn't the centre of attention. Saying that, with the right clothing, breastfeeding can be very discreet and I wouldn't have left my child hungry because there was nowhere discreet to feed. The worst was having to breastfeed on a flight with a stranger (male) next to me, my arms were basically touching his whilst I breastfeed my son!
