Before I start, I know it’s none of my business but I’m nosy so can’t help it !!

I know a couple who are both teachers and they just seem to have endless cash & I can’t work out where they get it from ! They’ve got a nice 4 bed house that they kitted out with brand new furniture the moment they moved in, she drives a brand new Range Rover and he’s just bought a Porsche, every school holiday they go away - proper 5* luxury breaks, they both have Rolexes, she’s got a massive engagement ring etc.

Do teachers get paid the sort of salaries that give you this lifestyle ?! I feel like I’m in the wrong job !

Obviously teachers don't usually have Porsches, Rolexes etc so they either have a private income, have won the lottery, or are being bankrolled.

Why not go around and ask to see a few bank statements? Smile

ichundich · 19/02/2024 19:11

Maybe they've inherited, maybe they have a few properties with rental income, maybe they tutor privately, maybe they are criminals., maybe they buy everything on hired purchase.

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2024 19:11

Where about in the country do you live? One or two inheritances, careful with spending and that life is achievable on a combined income. The cars could be leased.

Comedycook · 19/02/2024 19:12

Inheritance
Lottery win
Shit loads of credit

?

RM2013 · 19/02/2024 19:13

Teachers don’t earn massive salaries. They could have savings, inheritances or just have loads on finance/credit

Robbiesraft · 19/02/2024 19:13

Massive debt? Lottery? Inheritance? Proceeds of crime? One of them wrote a one-hit-wonder song in their youth and are living off the royalties? I'd ask them directly.

Notimeforaname · 19/02/2024 19:14

Inheritance, big win, extra work, credit cards.. could be anything. It's a waste of your time being jealous of people.

GreyhpundGirl · 19/02/2024 19:15

People have money for all sorts of reasons that aren't to do with their jobs. I'm a teacher and have a decent salary but aren't living the life of luxury. If you have a senior leadership role, you'll earn a lot more than the average classroom teacher though.

Volatileisla · 19/02/2024 19:15

Is he a science teacher called mr white?

TinySaltLick · 19/02/2024 19:17

Could be geography teachers? Due to a loop hole in school funding they are paid 3x the national average so probably 100k+ each

Is he a science teacher called mr white?

🤣🤣🤣 my thoughts exactly!

Netball01 · 19/02/2024 19:18

@Volatileisla ha no they’re both PE teachers !

we live in the south east, so houses are pretty expensive here.

I know the siblings on both sides and they don’t have anywhere near the same lifestyle so I’m not convinced it’s inheritance

Is this a teacher bashing thread.l? Yes. A household with two experienced professionals teachers could easily have £120k coming in.

NotFastButFurious · 19/02/2024 19:19

Teaching pay grades are available online, at senior levels they are not as badly paid as they’d lead you to believe!

confusedlots · 19/02/2024 19:20

It usually comes from family. I have friends who both work, but not in high earning jobs. His parents owned a couple of big 4 bedroom houses which they rented out. When my friends married they 'sold' one of the houses to them, but for much much less than it was worth. They also seem to change their cars every few years and sell their 'old' cars to them for much less than they're worth.

When one of the friends was at university in a different part of the country, the parents bought a flat for them to live in. So they paid no rent at university and now they own a flat mortgage free which they rent out and get a rental income from.

None of that would have been possible without parents with a lot of money/investments

Doseofreality · 19/02/2024 19:21

Clearly got a sideline selling Ket and Prime Energy Drinks to students during break times.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 19/02/2024 19:22

Credit cards maxed out, secret big win somewhere, money gifted or inherited who the hell knows. Why don't you ask them?

Hatty65 · 19/02/2024 19:24

Teacher pay grades are online.

If you're interested I'm a Head of Department with 30 years teaching experience behind me. I earn £51,000 and can't afford a Porsche or a 5* holiday.

They are either massively in debt, or someone else has funded this for them.

innerdesign · 19/02/2024 19:26

No kids? Two professional salaries, working for 10/15 years in the job and no mat leave/childcare costs, plus cars on PCP and a big mortgage means you could theoretically have this lifestyle. No judgement as we're in this position (although two much more basic cars!). We both bought property in our mid 20s which we then sold for a profit when we moved in together.

Perhaps their siblings are less flash but have as much money.

DD is a teacher. DS is an academic so not earning big bucks. They are however trustafarians but keep it dark.

The couple described sound foolish and flash and it doesn't ring true. We do know a couple where he is a teacher and she is a best selling author. They don't flash rolexes or drive flash cars. They might have bought one of their dc a very special cello.

Private school teachers can be on very good wages

Badgerandfox227 · 19/02/2024 19:34

Only fans?

BabaBarrio · 19/02/2024 19:34

My sister is a SAHM married to a maths teacher.

They live like that because he has a £50m trust fund that gives him a monthly income of at least £10k on top of his wages. They can’t help splashing the cash.

They are so humble about how they have chosen to live modestly amongst ‘regular people’ in a ‘bog standard’ million pound home. They keep their holiday homes on the downlow- when they go to their mountain home (they own the mountain), they are “on a camping trip” 😂

I love my sister and am happy for her, but it cracks me up how she tries to blend in and pretend she isn’t rich.

Milkandnosugarplease · 19/02/2024 19:38

Family inheritance is my guess. Death of grandparents enabled our RS teacher to buy a house in very nice area with no mortgage.
