Before I start, I know it’s none of my business but I’m nosy so can’t help it !!

I know a couple who are both teachers and they just seem to have endless cash & I can’t work out where they get it from ! They’ve got a nice 4 bed house that they kitted out with brand new furniture the moment they moved in, she drives a brand new Range Rover and he’s just bought a Porsche, every school holiday they go away - proper 5* luxury breaks, they both have Rolexes, she’s got a massive engagement ring etc.

Do teachers get paid the sort of salaries that give you this lifestyle ?! I feel like I’m in the wrong job !

This could be describing a couple I know. One of them received two back to back inheritances.

decionsdecisions62 · 20/02/2024 05:10

They have a sugar daddy. They are bank robbers. Hookers? Why would we know?

In the South East it could easily be property inheritance well invested. Small good decisions made early on can snowball.

Inherit a modest house in an unfashionable area. You could sell it and use the resulting money as a deposit on a house in a more fashionable area. Or you could hang on to it, get a rental income. At the time you don't know which is going to be the 'right' decision.

Could be geography teachers? Due to a loop hole in school funding they are paid 3x the national average so probably 100k+ each

This is hilarious, please tell me more. My DH is a headteacher so earning more than a classroom teacher, but sadly massively short of 100k. I'd very much appreciate him losing all the responsibility he has to go back to being a classroom geography teacher again.

Or then again, this could be complete nonsense

TheSnowyOwl · 20/02/2024 08:06

We have a few teachers and a TA at our school with a Porsche.

Drug dealers no other logical explanation 🧐

The teacher that lived next door to us did something before his teaching days straight out of uni that provides him with royalty payments for a v long time. Pretty obscure and you would never know his name either. They’re both teachers, never splashes the cash but obv v v comfortable.

Could be many things. Inheritance, loans, invested at the right time, credit, lottery, etc.

I don't think it does any good to waste time wondering where other people get their money from. If they are comfortable then great. I wish we all were.

I have a friend who is a teacher and her DH is on a similar income. They have an impressive lifestyle.
As it happens though he is very astute and invests wisely and well in stocks and shares. Maybe it's this? Some people are just very good with money. Sadly I'm not one of them!

Dixiechickonhols · 20/02/2024 09:21

I honestly wouldn’t pry. I’ve got a relative who was orphaned as a toddler. She calls new family mum & dad, brothers etc. She looks like them. She will have inherited a very sizeable amount (both parents were professionals with a nice house, pensions, death in service) plus the claim from the accident that killed everyone. It’s not something that’s common knowledge.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 20/02/2024 09:24

You know teachers don't earn that. Salary bands are clearly advertised like many occupations.

Their money could have come from any number of sources like most people.

AndyPandyismyhero · 20/02/2024 09:31

If they are both PE teachers, is it possible they could have successful careers in a sport and are / have been sponsored financially? I know one ht locally is a successful ( competes at international level) sportsman in a lesser known sport. He is still sponsored to a reasonable amount which allows him a lifestyle he wouldn't have on his salary alone. It is also something which tends to happen during school holidays so you wouldn't necessarily be aware as it rarely impacts his work. My ht has a husband who is a national champion in another sport. Again, it is fairly niche but still brings in some sponsorship money.

Is he a science teacher called mr white?

He didn't flash his cash tho!

AliceA2021 · 20/02/2024 09:52

2 SLT easily 120k household or more. Leased cars, inheritance, marking A level papers, private tuition in evenings or weekends. PE teachers often have responsibility points since easy subject to teach at least years 7 - 9 and core 10-11.

Or private income adding to pot. Do they have children?

bonzaitree · 20/02/2024 09:53

Have you watched breaking bad OP? They chemistry teachers by any chance? 😂

Are they? I know a geography teacher, HoD and they’re on 40k. Either you’re misinformed or they’re being done…

Theresplendentemmaforbes · 20/02/2024 10:12

How old are they? If they're 40+ and in fairly senior positions then I can see how they could have this lifestyle without any mysterious source of income or debt.

I know a few couples in their early/mid 40s who met partners in late teens/early twenties and bought in mid-20s because of two incomes & 100% mortgages. They bought at the right time and place (gentrification) and are now living in houses worth in excess of £800k and mortgage free/v small mortgages. If both or one is in a senior role they could be earning in excess of £100k and if there is a small/no mortgage and no kids then that's a lot of cash they have available each month.

I also know a teacher who currently has a porsche. Cars are his passion, he can't afford to buy a super car but he can afford to lease one (single, no kids, small flat) so each year he leases a new supercar.

zingally · 20/02/2024 10:15

No kids makes a big difference.

They could be bringing in anything from 60 to 90K between then quite happily, depending on their roles in school. Which in the right part of the country is a very tidy income.

Teachers are able to borrow up to 5X their income on a mortgage, so they could be mortgaged very highly. The cars are probably on finance, and the furniture could be as well.

They might have had good inheritances. Maybe they have some side hustles?

Robbiesraft · 19/02/2024 19:13

Massive debt? Lottery? Inheritance? Proceeds of crime? One of them wrote a one-hit-wonder song in their youth and are living off the royalties? I'd ask them directly.

This.

My friend was in Press Gang and still gets random royalty cheques.

Threewordseightletters · 20/02/2024 10:26

The entry level Rolex Oyster is under 6000 new. If it's something you really want, it's affordable on a professional income with no kids. Many people have engagement rings which cost 3-6k

sunglassesonthetable · 20/02/2024 10:49

Tutoring!

Cash in hand. £40 per hour. Can't remember if that was per child or not, and they did it in pairs.

There are some teachers near me rolling in it. In fairness they graft all during term time after school.

But a couple of hours x 5 x term time. It adds up.
