Before I start, I know it’s none of my business but I’m nosy so can’t help it !!

I know a couple who are both teachers and they just seem to have endless cash & I can’t work out where they get it from ! They’ve got a nice 4 bed house that they kitted out with brand new furniture the moment they moved in, she drives a brand new Range Rover and he’s just bought a Porsche, every school holiday they go away - proper 5* luxury breaks, they both have Rolexes, she’s got a massive engagement ring etc.

Do teachers get paid the sort of salaries that give you this lifestyle ?! I feel like I’m in the wrong job !

My sister is a SAHM married to a maths teacher.

They live like that because he has a £50m trust fund that gives him a monthly income of at least £10k on top of his wages. They can’t help splashing the cash.

They are so humble about how they have chosen to live modestly amongst ‘regular people’ in a ‘bog standard’ million pound home. They keep their holiday homes on the downlow- when they go to their mountain home (they own the mountain), they are “on a camping trip” 😂

I love my sister and am happy for her, but it cracks me up how she tries to blend in and pretend she isn’t rich.

Your BIL has a £50m trust fund? 😯does he have an unmarried brother? Asking for a friend!

Only child.

PrueRamsay · 19/02/2024 19:48

Could be anything.

Lottery win, inheritance, big gambling win, side hustle, any number of things as well as they might be in senior roles.

If you know so much about them, why don’t you just ask them?

DarkDarkNight · 19/02/2024 19:53

Well if you’re ruling out family money/inheritance due to knowing the siblings then a secret lottery win (it wouldn’t need to be millions), SLT roles, cars on lease and credit cards maxed out, lots of private tutoring?

MILTOBE · 19/02/2024 19:55

That must be the worst investment ever! The interest on £50m should be at least a couple of million a year.

They are trying to triple it so their DC each get the same. They don’t spend anything near all the interest. That’s part of the “we are so humble and modest” brag.

Zanatdy · 19/02/2024 19:57

I used to think the same of a couple I know, then I found out her sister was married to a millionaire and has funded everything (their house / car etc).

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 19/02/2024 20:01

This could be DH & me (except we have DC) but we both have private incomes (trust funds). We don’t tell people irl though cos they get weird about it so it’s easier to just let them think it’s all on credit.

Only fans?!

Invisimamma · 19/02/2024 20:04

In Scotland classroom teachers whove been in the job 5yrs or more are earning about £48k.

That's plenty to afford a very nice lifestyle especially in areas where housing costs are low and you're both earning that amount.

AutumnCrow · 19/02/2024 20:13

Controversial opinion here, but maybe, just maybe, none of us fucking know.

OMGitsnotgood · 19/02/2024 20:19

We have friends who are teachers and given that their pay scales are public knowledge, I know they both earned less than we did, yet had a far more luxurious lifestyle. Fast forward a couple of decades... we were able to pay off our mortgage while they were still paying off theirs, and we found out their parents had paid their childcare and for work on their house. Ie paying their inheritance up front. You never really know what's behind other peoples financial arrangements

Dixiechickonhols · 19/02/2024 20:26

Could still be inherited eg godmother leaving to godchild and other siblings have not inherited. Lottery/premium bonds win.
Working as online PT/influencer.

RusticRon · 19/02/2024 20:34

Senior teaching staff? They get paid quite well

MadamVastra · 19/02/2024 20:53

I don't even believe this post is real

Overloadimplode · 19/02/2024 20:58

You can look up their salaries online and it not enough for a Porsche so the money is coming from elsewhere.

shielder · 19/02/2024 21:04

Maybe they are headteachers

BIossomtoes · 19/02/2024 21:07

I have a friend who won the lottery. Her lifestyle is obviously completely out of alignment with her part time job. I expect people wonder about her too because very people have been told about the huge sum she has invested.

Rewis · 19/02/2024 21:09

I have a friend (and her husband) who lives in a newbuild nice neighbourhood, new audi, just bought a holiday property by the sea and are building a new house. She's a researcher working on grant and he works in a shop part time. Id love to know where they got their money from. I know their parents and ehioe they're financially fine they are not wealthy enough to give all this to all their children. Also no family death mentioned.

But inheritance from a great aunt or parents making damn good investments when they were born and now cashing in.

Tatonka · 19/02/2024 21:13

Drug lords

Mumsfishnets · 19/02/2024 21:14

Inheritance? Just because the other siblings aren't buying range rovers doesn't mean they haven't got money invested away for their future.

Maybe they've made good investments. Got lucky with a house they've sold? Won the lottery? Run a successful tutoring business?

They'll be loads of people you know who have more money than you'd expect and they'll be lots with less than you think living on credit. Holidays and rolexes don't always mean lots in the bank and enormous pensions.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/02/2024 21:14

TBF my in-laws lived like paupers and dh and his sisters remember being hungry as children. When FIL died nearly 20 years ago, there was a million in the bank. I appreciate it's not a vast fortune but the house was like Tome Riddle's mum's!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 19/02/2024 21:15

Heavily in debt?

Jeannne92 · 19/02/2024 21:17

Are they class teachers or management? Have these always been their careers?

I would assume they have benefitted from investing in property over time (e.g. buy to let) or have inherited some money. Or possibly have a lucrative side hustle.
