Before I start, I know it’s none of my business but I’m nosy so can’t help it !!

I know a couple who are both teachers and they just seem to have endless cash & I can’t work out where they get it from ! They’ve got a nice 4 bed house that they kitted out with brand new furniture the moment they moved in, she drives a brand new Range Rover and he’s just bought a Porsche, every school holiday they go away - proper 5* luxury breaks, they both have Rolexes, she’s got a massive engagement ring etc.

Do teachers get paid the sort of salaries that give you this lifestyle ?! I feel like I’m in the wrong job !

I went to school with a girl who got her mortgage on her house fresh out of uni at 21. She was mortgage free by 40. Maybe they did this.

Hollowgast · 19/02/2024 21:20

They've got a French Bulldog too, haven't they?

anxioussister · 19/02/2024 21:20

My best friend is teacher, her husband is an artist who probably makes similar money. His grandfather was a very successful banker and she had some sort of wealthy aunt character with no children who a) bought them a house when they first married and then b) left everything to them when she died ten years later.

you never know where it comes from. Always nice when people who don’t have to work do worthwhile jobs with their time.

MamaAlwaysknowsbest · 19/02/2024 21:24

Teachers do have good lives, no matter what 😀

pecanpie101 · 19/02/2024 21:24

Only fans
Crime
Living with lots of debt
Investiments/crypto
Inheritance
Good with money when they were younger

Could be any of those. When you find out, less us know OP Smile

Cas112 · 19/02/2024 21:27

I know someone who does alot of private tuition on the side and she earns a wedge

Maybe they both do that

Spirallingdownwards · 19/02/2024 21:27

I know a teacher who sold an invention of his for £7m and then gave up his old job and teaches for fun because he enjoys it and no longer has to do his previous more stressful (for him) job.

Cas112 · 19/02/2024 21:28

Also if you think they are doing something illegal just say that op instead of skirting around it 🙄😂

Bryonny84 · 19/02/2024 21:38

Drug dealing? Seriously though, I had a friend who had a fairly ordinary job but had a nice house/car, Louis Vitton luggage, designer clothes, fabulous holidays. She took me out for a birthday lunch and all of her credit cards were refused and I had to pay. She was completely skint, all a front. Maybe they are all fur coat and no knickers?

BronwenTheBrave · 19/02/2024 21:41

They don’t eat smashed avocado on rye bread regularly? At £5 per day you could buy a Rolex every year.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/02/2024 21:43

DD once had a supply maths teacher. It was Les McKeown from the Bay City Rollers! I believe he was teaching because he'd spent all the money though :)

Netball01 · 19/02/2024 21:56

@BronwenTheBrave add another zero to that figure and you might get close to a Rolex !

They’re PE teachers so pretty sure their money isn’t coming from tutoring. As
i said I’m just being nosy really as I’ll never find out but your suggestions have entertained me 😂

Of course they do, that’s why there are queues of people clamouring to become teachers and why there are absolutely no teaching vacancies in schools.

Lightnose · 19/02/2024 22:03

Whenever I see a Rolex I assume it's a fake they brought home from their holiday in Turkey 🤣

moomoomoo27 · 19/02/2024 22:05

I have a friend who's a teacher and her parents explained to her how to invest in the stock market and gave her a bit of money to start in her uni days. She now earns more from the dividends than she does from her teaching job & doesn't pay tax on that part.

This is on old teaching salaries so not the 30k they start on now.

Residentevil · 19/02/2024 22:06

One of them is secretly the head of an ocg?

whatsupluckyducky · 19/02/2024 22:10

They could both be tutoring at night/weekends. £40/hr per student and sometimes they tutor a few in one session

embryoniclove · 19/02/2024 22:41

Teacher here, who for the record is not driving round in a Porsche.

Are they both main scale teachers or do they have responsibility? If they are middle/senior leadership then they could have a decent enough combined salary.

If they're child free and both sold property to move in together then that could explain, in part, their 4 bed house. Or they could be on an interest only mortgage.

They could also both do exam marking or other side incomes during the summer, which give an extra few grand each a year.

They could work in a school which offers a range of benefits - rare, but some academy trusts can offer their own pay scales. I know of one MAT which allows employees to get brand new cars on salary sacrifice arrangements and no deposit, and employee discounts on shopping/holidays.

Maybe they've both opted out of their pension contributions for a while? (It's a terrible financial idea but in the short term would free up a fair chunk of money even when it's considered tax would be paid on that which wasn't paid in)

Yes, I know it won't explain everything, but all or a few of the above, combined with putting a few things on credit from time to time, might explain it.

GreyhpundGirl · 19/02/2024 19:15

People have money for all sorts of reasons that aren't to do with their jobs. I'm a teacher and have a decent salary but aren't living the life of luxury. If you have a senior leadership role, you'll earn a lot more than the average classroom teacher though.

A lot more? I'm SLT and I get 2 grand more than a teacher on ups3..

TeenLifeMum · 20/02/2024 00:30

How new is the Porsche? My friend bought one for 28k - it was the smaller 4x4 one. There’s a variety of prices below the 100k + options. My friend is a teacher and paid of her mortgage at 45… because her dad gifted her £300k. They live in a big house but frugally due to private education for dc.

OhcantthInkofaname · 20/02/2024 00:35

Maybe they have an Only Fans account.

WandaWonder · 20/02/2024 01:45

TomWambsgansSwans · 19/02/2024 19:08

Obviously teachers don't usually have Porsches, Rolexes etc so they either have a private income, have won the lottery, or are being bankrolled.

Why not go around and ask to see a few bank statements? Smile

Good question

WandaWonder · 20/02/2024 01:46

Netball01 · 19/02/2024 19:18

@Volatileisla ha no they’re both PE teachers !

we live in the south east, so houses are pretty expensive here.

I know the siblings on both sides and they don’t have anywhere near the same lifestyle so I’m not convinced it’s inheritance

It's done just to give something to others to talk about

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 20/02/2024 03:44

@Lightnose it's easy to tell a fake from the real thing
