For being angry at our neighbours parking?

Hi all!

We live in a terraced house on an estate that has designated parking for those without driveways. Infront and to the left of our house is where our neighbour parks his van as that is his space. However recently he has taken to parking his second car and encouraging his visitors to park infront of it and therefore directly over our pathway. I have asked nicely a few times and its still happening. To me that is clearly an obstruction? We have to go onto our neighbours property to get around. I have had to carry my wheelchair bound friend OVER the gravel on new years eve because his friends had parked there. What route do I need to take with this??

Cheers!

If you have a managing agent, contact them. They probably won't do much more than send a letter to everyone asking them to park nicely, but it may be useful. This looks like it is blocking the emergency services to attend your property (if no pavement between your path and the road) , so maybe you could look into that angle. Also look into blocking the area beyond your path with something heavy, maybe large plant pots. Inconvenience your neighbour by continually asking them to move. Good luck, it must be infuriating.

GoingRoundInOvals · 19/02/2024 11:28

It's all about the kerb. Is it a dropped kerb in front of your path?

or any yellow lines etc?

if not, then technically it's a free road and he can park whenever he wants (even though it'll make you gnash your teeth and your blood pressure rise!

best thing would be a conversation with him

SwingTheMonkey · 19/02/2024 11:45

YANBU. I used to live on a new estate that had a driveway for 1.5(!) cars and a couple of visitor spaces out the front. My next door neigh used to leave his driveway clear and park in the visitors space for no apparent reason, therefore reducing the space for visitors to park on a very crowded estate. Used to drive me absolutely mad. There was however, absolutely nothing I could do. He had the right to park there, however cunty it may be.
It looks, from the photo, like this is similar. An absolute shitbag move but technically nothing you can do about it. Hopefully another poster will have a suggestion but I feel your pain!

Scampuss · 19/02/2024 11:48

Knock on the door every single time you need to go in or out, and do that frequently. Invite all your friends with buggies, or who are wheelchair users, over for an afternoon and have them coming at 10 minute intervals.

GasPanic · 19/02/2024 12:11

Isn't there a white bar that the council can paint which prohibits parking in that area ?

If you need wheelchair access to the path then maybe it is best to contact the council and get one painted ?

goldleg · 19/02/2024 12:28

Is that a road or path in front of your garden and who did garden?

Can you send better photo?

If path they are selfish as parking obstruction.

We have loads of selfish Parkers around here.

Incapable of buying a house with enough space for all their shitty work vans which are an eyesore.

MaggieFS · 19/02/2024 12:32

So the white van is parked in a dead end space and the white BMW is blocking it in, but he's saying it's ok because it's his van being blocked?

Is the road way public property or a private estate (even if LA or HA owned?). You probably need to get whomever it is to paint a white H line.

MadeOfAllWork · 19/02/2024 12:34

Is there a pavement or does your path go directly onto the road?

lanthanum · 19/02/2024 12:34

Painting a white H line (or even a wheelchair symbol) might be enough to make the point that access is needed to the path. I guess they didn't paint one originally because with marked bays, the assumption might be that the only parking would be in the bays.

useitorlose · 19/02/2024 12:35

Are all 5 of those bins yours? <<misses point of thread>>

Hiya,

It is not a road. We are on an estate and this is the area in front of his car parking space. There are no yellow lines and no dropped kerb as it isn't a public road or a pavement. It is also not a parking space unlike the part behind where his van is, which is his demised space for his property.

Our house is freehold but the land is still under some sort of leasehold as we pay estate management fees. But they are washing their hands of this...

Haha, no so the three on the left belong to us. The three on the right belong to our neighbour. The layout is stupid because we own all of the gravelled section on the left and half of the gravelled section on the right (in line with where our houses join)

So our property boundaries are to the front of that path and the wooden sleepers. To the left where the white van is is his demised parking space and then next to that is our other neighbours parking space. Infront of those spaces is a free area to enable people to come and go, it isn't a public road nor is it marked as a pavement but it allows access to the properties and the parking spaces. He has essentially doubled the length of his space and blocked the access to our property.

RareStork · 19/02/2024 14:38

I will also point out there are two communal spaces which he never uses and everyone else parks on the road, not in front of someones property. If he wanted to block someone in then he could park infront of his own front door but that would be infuriating to him i'm sure...

Whether it's officially allowed or not, it's cheeky as fuck.

Yes thats his van in his demised parking space. I'm quite sure the van is dead as it hasn't moved in weeks.

It's a private estate under a management company. They said they can't help.

I put my bin out for collection one day as the binmen won't take it off the gravel and he told me I was blocking in his cars by putting my bin out...

CheesecakeandCrackers · 19/02/2024 14:43

Hmm I'm not sure you can do much. Antisocial though it is they aren't blocking anyone in, it seems an odd layout though. Do you need regular wheelchair access as if so I'd be knocking each and every time to get the car moved but I suspect the owner won't care.

RatatouillePie · 19/02/2024 14:44

It's quite obvious he is parking like a tw*t and preventing you being able to get off your path.

I would put up a sign on your gravel section saying "No Parking. Please do not obstruct the pathway". If that doesn't work I would put notices on the cars that park there telling them not to park there.

Is there any option of turning the LH gravel bit into your parking space?? Is the pathway just yours, or do you share it with a neighbour?

If he keeps letting people park there, then I would perhaps get a friend to also park there and block him in his own space. If he knocks on your door to ask for the car to be moved, just say you have no idea who it belongs to and probably someone who thought it was a parking place as others keep parking there too.

RareStork · 19/02/2024 14:46

No but we are TTC and if we succeed, i'll have a pram so i'm also thinking ahead 😂 I know if I deal with it at the time i'll get even more stressed! We also have elderly relatives who like to visit and they aren't great on their feet so climbing across the gravel and sleepers isn't exactly a walk in the park...

When they park right up close to the path and backed up to the van we actually have to walk onto our neighbours property to get out.

OP posts:
bumtrumpet · 19/02/2024 14:46

It's obnoxious, but I'm not sure that anything can be done officially if it's not a dropped kerb. Keep knocking and asking him to move each time you need to get a wheelchair past - hopefully that'll shame him into not parking there.

Helloo,

I have a no parking sign there now and he still ignores it!
I've also left notes on his and his visitors cars and they get ignored too. He really doesn't care..

Everything from our bins on the left to halfway across the gravel on the right is ours, so we could do whatever we want with it provided we leave the drainage covers in place. I'm not sure it would work as a car parking space, never thought about it. We have a demised parking space across the road which seems absolutely ridiculous!

OP posts:
MaggieFS · 19/02/2024 14:52

What an arsehole.

Perhaps have this moved over to the legal board to see if anyone has any suggestions on what you might be able to do? Have you tried talking to the police non-emergency number as to whether it's some sort of harassment?

HappiestSleeping · 19/02/2024 14:54

I don't think there is anything you can do here. I would be tempted to accidentally bash the car as I take my bins in and out though.

RareStork · 19/02/2024 14:55

And to make matters worse, our other neighbour has fenced over everyone's rear shared access and stuck a hot tub in front so there's no way out of the back!

OP posts:
GabriellaMontez · 19/02/2024 14:57

I would pursue the management company. Find something to make them responsible for such as an accessible entrance. Make a real nuisance.

Or buy a trailer and park it half across your gap.

He's obviously very rude so it's probably going to take quite an extreme solution.
