Each to their own I guess 🤢

Generational wealth - humble, unassuming, never mention their wealth (almost embarrassed by it).

As well they might be since they didn't earn it @SecretSquare

God I hate this old money good; new money bad thing that gets trotted out.

SomeCatFromJapan · 18/02/2024 21:46

@whirlingdevonish Yep. Are they bollox embarrassed by their inherited wealth, it's just the ultimate humblebrag.

It's my experience though.

I have two friends whose parents are multi millionaires. You'd never know. They never mention it...I only know because we've been friends since we were tiny and know what their parent's house sold for.

The new money people we've had the unfortunate to live next to (thankfully both moved) would literally drop in about their money at every opportunity. "Oh I got this at (the local jeweller), as their best customer"..."they wanted (X) to give me a small mortgage for my property, I said are you having a laugh? I've got millions in the bank". Etc etc etc. Became a running joke about how they'd shoehorn how rich they were into the most mundane of conversations.

But why would friends talk about their mam and dad's financial situation? It's

whirlingdevonish · 18/02/2024 21:54

@SecretSquare maybe they're unused to their wealth and don't know how to handle it. Generational wealth is just that - has had decades or more for it to settle. New, earned wealth often is quite a thing. You start with nothing (perhaps), and by dint of intelligence and hard work you wake up one day and realise you are rich.
Generational wealth is often taken for granted.

Anyway, my experience is that obnoxious people come from all backgrounds and levels of wealth, just as lovely people do.

SecretSquare · 18/02/2024 18:08

It's not worth less.

However the wealthy people I know very much fall in to two camps.

Generational wealth - humble, unassuming, never mention their wealth (almost embarrassed by it).

New money - takes every bloody opportunity to tell anyone who'll listen about how much money they have. We've been very unfortunate to have two separate neighbours like this (different houses!) and it's always been a standing joke about how they could manage to squeeze something in about how rich they are even when taking the bin out. It's tedious and embarrassing.

Exactly! Thanks for taking the pain to explain. I gave up !

The few people making it their life mission to defend OPs cringe post, it seems almost like a set up! Quite obvious !! How embarrassing for you, OP!

PegasusReturns · 19/02/2024 00:11

It's my experience though

it’s not mine. My DC are at schools where I’d estimate the old:new money is about 80:20. The ratio of range rovers/G wagons/Porsches to the “beaten up Volvo” at pick up is approx 200 to precisely none and the ladies bursary lunch is wall to wall Chanel/Gucci/Dior, resplendent with gold logos and chains.

You still haven't explained why you've mocked the OP for not being able to afford Chanel?

Do you agree it makes you appear to be a total dick?

VoleChomper · 19/02/2024 01:29

and what is a 'cringe post'? Such an illiterate phrase.

whirlingdevonish · 19/02/2024 10:26

@VoleChomper I believe it is when the poster doesn't know that cringe is a verb or a noun, and instead uses it as an adjective.

Where did I mock?I just asked a simple question, I still think a Chanel bag would have looked way better! It’s possible that it’s outside OPs price range. Why not admit it? why is it stinging you so much !! lol ! 😂

The amount of obsession you are showing about OP’s cringe post about a tacky cheap bag is making YOU appear to be a dick. You are really embarrassing yourself!

Now that you can’t beat my arguement with a proper answer, You and your other IDs are even grammar policing now! 😂 Get a life!

Allfur · 19/02/2024 11:29

I don't know what a chanel bag looks like, is it better, more superior? It's all a bit baffling

Allfur · 19/02/2024 11:30

All the name calling is a bit much

It's okay, I've seen your other thread. Explains a lot about why you're behaving this way. If this brings you a bit of distraction who am I to complain Smile

Fucking hell. What argument? You’ve taking a few cheap and predictable shots. That’s it. You’ve hardly delivered a controversial thesis that requires the combined might of the world’s foremost minds to comprehend and/or dispute.

I do enjoy the irony of you thinking that because we’re not in support of attacking OP that we’re fangirling her, yet arguing for the superiority of old money versus new based on tired stereotypes that don’t reflect actual reality. If we’re relying on stereotypes to provide the truth though, you do realise that old money considers you to not just be socially inferior, but not particularly useful either (unlike new money, which can provide a helpful cash injection. See the Dollar Princesses).

howdisappointingwasthat · 19/02/2024 11:47

Where is the bench thread

pokebowls · 19/02/2024 11:49

@User5512 The amount of obsession you are showing about OP’s cringe post about a tacky cheap bag is making YOU appear to be a dick. You are really embarrassing yourself!

The only person embarrassing themselves is you by calling an £800 cheap when most of the posters on MN couldn't imagine spending a quarter of that on a bag. Shame on you. Do anything to try to out sneer other people but end up with egg on your face

PegasusReturns · 19/02/2024 14:44

@howdisappointingwasthat it wasn’t really a bench thread so much as a comment.

a poster was looking to spend some cash on a bag as a treat, possibly an inheritance. She posted in S&B and my recollection is budget was about £1k. It must have been at least a decade ago.

she got some helpful suggestions alongside much faux worthy handwringing “why would you spend so much on a bag”

Accusations of profligacy abounded and eventually a poster surpassed all others by suggesting the OP bought a bench.

bag threads always bring out the worst judgey posters and bench woman sort of became a byword for that sort of nonsense.

Add don't eat communal bombay mix at bars in Singapore to your list 🤢🤮

That sounds like the voice of an unpleasant experience!

New money. 🙄

As if it's 'better' to inherit money than it is to earn it.

Or marry it!

NoOrdinaryMorning · 19/02/2024 17:00

Looks fake to me but I'm no designer bag connoisseur!

RaraRachael · 17/02/2024 12:51

It's a grey bag..................

Would have no idea it was Gucci if you hadn't said so.

It's purple...Grin
