Random man moved my beach bag and towel from my sun lounger and chucked them on another one behind

I'm on holidays.
I arrived at the little beach early for a swim.
There are free sun loungers there for everyone to use, plenty were free.

I put my bag and towel (scrunched up)on a free sun lounger at the front, closest to the water, lay there for a bit and then went for a swim. The water is very close by.
While I was in the water, I saw a young woman, a middle aged woman and a middle aged man arrive by my sun lounger.
The 2 women lay down on two empty sun loungers next to mine.
The man hovered around for a bit, he was standing there beside my sun lounger, looked around and then chucked my bag and towel on to a different sun lounger behind mine. He made to put his stuff on my sun lounger.
I saw it all.
I got out of the water went up to him and gave him a piece of my mind. Loudly. People started looking. He denied it but I told him I was watching him.
He looked embarrassed.
The younger woman said something, don't know what but it wasn't 'sorry', and I told her not to make excuses for him.
They all looked mortified.
A girl on her own nearby looked over approvingly.

Well I am menopausal and one of the things I now delight in is that I have less tolerance of being impinged upon and treated like i don't matter. After decades of being a people pleaser.

So I say well done OP. It's obvious when people reserve loungers. Most normal people would look around to see if there was anyone in the vicinity who might be the owner of said sun lounger.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2024 09:36

Why would someone leave their bag and fuck off?

Sunbed baggers. They spoil normal usage. Hotels sometimes have notices that staff will move baggage that's been unattended for too long.

shielder · 17/02/2024 09:36

@EchoFallz so on holiday you get a sunbed, you then go for a swim & move your stuff to the floor so someone else can use the bed & then what?

EchoFallz · 17/02/2024 09:38

I don’t go to holidays when I have to wrestle for sunbeds. Those kind of hotels are not for me.

I've only seen this with towels not bags but luckily the hotels I go to are nice so you don't need to put your towel on the floor to go for a swim 🤷🏻‍♀️

Isthisexpected · 17/02/2024 09:38

At the beach swimming? Yanbu

SimianAway · 17/02/2024 09:38

I had this at a spa, but I was the Russian gentleman in the situation! All the poolside loungers were occupied (by people actually lying on them), bar six loungers in a row. No bags or personal items on them, just wet spa towels.

I hung around for a minute or two, and asked the people swimming lengths in the pool if it was their towels/loungers and everyone said no. So I carefully hung up one of the towels on a hook and lay down on one of the loungers and started reading my book.

About 20 minutes later the group of six people came back from having lunch and had a massive go at me! Accused me of stealing the towel too, until I showed them where I'd hung it up. I stood my ground and they did back down, but it made for an awkward trip around the thermal experiences as whenever I crossed their paths they were glaring daggers.

So you are giving examples of what you would do in a situation you've never been in. Brilliant! No one was buying the "I put my towel on the floor" crap 🤣🤣🤣

EchoFallz · 17/02/2024 09:40

Gosh, no, I would not share a pool with other people

SweetDreamsAreMadeOf · 17/02/2024 09:40

Well done on standing up for yourself OP, I'd have done the same.

Mumsnet has a high contingent of wallflowers who daren't open their own front doors, so some of the responses are to be expected.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 17/02/2024 09:41

SimianAway

you werent the Russian man at all, completely different, they had gone to lunch and you checked if the stuff belonged to anyone, there also wasn’t a bag on the bed

i am sorry they yelled at you, must have been very unpleasant

Growlybear83 · 17/02/2024 09:41

I think the man was very wrong to remove your belongings from the sun bed, although he wasn't to know that you were close by, rather than just reserving the sun bed while you were off having breakfast or lunch, but it was also wrong of you to behave like a fishwife when you got out of the water.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 17/02/2024 09:42

Two wrongs never make a right, correct!

Having read the tile I wrongly assumed the culprits were loud-mouthed yobs.

However, you going in guns blazing resulted in the aftermath

They should not have removed them but you should have asked politely and take it from there.

If it was us that had stuff removed - we dont like public arguments, we may have asked or not. But if we did, we'd be polite

EchoFallz · 17/02/2024 07:29

I’m on his side

Why?? What is someone on their own supposed to do then?
Do you expect them to stay glued to their sunbed for the whole day to avoid cf's pinching their spot?
It's challenging on your own.

shielder · 17/02/2024 09:35

Probably with his wife and child. Not nice to do that in front of them even if he was wrong.

Why not?

Because no one would like to have their partner or parent shouted at over such a trivial thing.

Because it's uncouth.

Could be achieved in a better way.

Two wrongs don't make a right. ...

shielder · 17/02/2024 09:43

Gosh, no, I would not share a pool with other people

And yet you have nothing better to do then write inane replies on a MN thread! I hope you find some peace in your life 🙏

JMSA · 17/02/2024 09:44

YANBU. He was an entitled idiot, and good on you for not letting him away with it.

Mutually beneficial all round.Grin

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/02/2024 09:44

Surely if you were this chap and it's early on, lots of lingers free and the one you have your eye on has what looks like one person's belongings on it ... my first thought would be "this person is probably in the sea and it's just them so I'll leave this bed and we can get three of the many that are still empty "? Surely?

If I was OP I'd naturally leave my belongings on a front row lounger so I can keep an eye on my stuff while in the sea.

Very, very different to twats who blatantly reserve several beds by a pool and when you try to find a bed they are all taken but no one is in the pool ...

He was unreasonable for insisting on nicking that bed when he had the pick of others (as pp have pointed out just what do you suggest, you take your belongings in the sea with you?!!).

OP your response was perhaps a bit disproportionate

shielder · 17/02/2024 09:45

Because no one would like to have their partner or parent shouted at over such a trivial thing.

Because it's uncouth.

My partner wouldn't move other peoples bags, it's uncouth.

Did everyone clap and cheer?

You could have been calmly assertive without showing yourself up by screaming in his face - unless of course he refused until it got to that point.

Emotionalsupportviper · 17/02/2024 09:47

Jennyjojo5 · 17/02/2024 07:30

Why! She was just swimming 🤷‍♀️ should people remove their belongings when they pop to the loo? To go buy an ice cream?

Exactly - it's not like she'd got up early, "bagsied" a lounger and then gone back to bed for a few hours.

You sound awful. Was there any need to be so aggressive

Yeh. Glad I’m not on holiday at that resort
