My husband still thinks everything is because of Covid

Sorry, I didn't know how to word the title.

His attitude is making me want a divorce. Ever since Covid he's adopted views which I completely disagree with and I think he's verging on conspiracy theory.

I just mentioned to him this evening that Chris Hoy has cancer.

Instantly he said "that's because of the Covid vaccine."

WHAT???

I'm actually so angry because he genuinely believes he's right and I'm wrong.

Everything that goes wrong is because of the vaccine.

Wwyd in this situation?

There is a lasting impact from covid so that wouldn't bother me.

But absolutely if it's the vaccines at fault for everything I'd be tempted to laugh in his face and LOVE the above posters idea of blaming everything on the 1918 flu epidemic Grin

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 08:29

Yeah I couldn't be married to a conspiracy theorist, shows a distinct lack of critical thinking.

It's fundamentally important to you that your partner agree with official narratives?

As I've pointed out to another poster: read about the replication and you will realise that researchers often can't replicate the results of previously published studies, which casts doubt on the reliability and validity of scientific findings and the peer review process. "The Science" (tee em) is not some great God like you seem to think it is!

Heronwatcher · 17/02/2024 08:44

@Woman355 if you’re prepared to stick with him for the time being, could you just ask him to not mention it at all? Sounds a bit controlling but at least you’d miss the pinch point of annoyance. I agree that you can’t change how he thinks but you can change him annoying you about it.

That’s one of the things I can’t understand with conspiracy theorists- why the need to keep segwaying it into every single blinking conversation? By all means tell someone once but most go onto a massive rant every time you see them- even when it’s quite obvious that the other person is not going to come round and/ or is just plain bored!

Arbor · 17/02/2024 08:46

@Lea3

Look up the replication crisis. It challenges the reliability of scientific findings, as many studies (perhaps most) now fail to be replicated by other researchers. This calls into question the trustworthiness of scientific methods and findings, and highlights issues like publication bias and oversimplified models of complex phenomena.

Okay, but this is related more to the actual research itself rather than the peer review process. I don't believe it necessarily follows that research papers can be dismissed as "garbage," either. Are you an academic?

WingsofRain · 17/02/2024 08:47

That would be an absolute red line for me, I’d be leaving as soon as I could.

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 08:48

It is important to me that my partner believes in science, the scientific method, reasoning and logic... Yes. Look, you do you but people will (Rightly) judge. Conspiracy theories are one of the greatest threats to our society.

The entire process which decides whether the research itself is valid is now corrupt, and the majority which are investigated now can't be replicated.

To me it follows that yes, the entire industry is now garbage.

BatchIt · 17/02/2024 08:56

I was at dinner last weekend with a group and a friend’s DH started banging on about people were only taken into hospital during covid so “they” could dispense end of life drugs and kill off as many as possible. I am friends with a fair few doctors. The table went totally silent and I felt so sorry for his wife because she appears normal………

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:04

@Lea3 hey, if science is corrupt (according to you, I presume you've not actually got any higher education) then what do you propose as an alternative?

Lea3 · 17/02/2024 09:08

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 08:48

The phrase 'I believe in science' is flawed because science isn't about belief; it's a methodology rooted in evidence and experimentation. Do you do scientific research or experimentation?

When people claim to 'believe in science,' they're essentially expressing faith in the credibility of scientific research findings. However, as I've said already, this belief overlooks the replication crisis, which has exposed significant flaws in much of scientific research.

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:10

No I don't do scientific research or experimentation, I don't need to. I trust in those who do. What do you do, per chance?

Nightblindness · 17/02/2024 09:19

I just mentioned to him this evening that Chris Hoy has cancer.

Instantly he said "that's because of the Covid vaccine."

Urgh. My husband said the same when I told him Steve Wright had died. I said 'are you kidding? Have you seen how unhealthy he looked?' and luckily he backed down with the vaccine conspiracy shit right away. But I know he still believes it. I came seriously close to wanting to divorce him during Covid, and told him so, so at least now he has the sense not to spout his nonsense at me, but I understand the frustration and disappointment you must feel knowing you are married to someone with these views.

Lea3 · 17/02/2024 09:22

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:10

No I don't do scientific research or experimentation, I don't need to. I trust in those who do. What do you do, per chance?

So, you're just putting faith in and "believing in them" (even despite evidence to the contrary). Isn't that the opposite of your cherished "science," which you claim is grounded in logic and reason?

I find your argument lacking. As someone who claims to be devoted to logic and rationality, I expected more than ad hominem attacks.

Why should someone's occupation determine the validity of their argument? Surely an argument should stand on its own merits, regardless of who presents it. Are only members of the academic caste able to use rational thought?

And I won't share personal information on an Internet forum, let alone to address your irrational argument. Stop asking for personal information about me.

OceanicBoundlessness · 17/02/2024 09:24

There are three cancer facilities that are mothballed. Professor Karol Sikora, an oncologist wants to see them reopened.
Perhaps your dh could chanel his energy into some positive activity and see if he could help with some campaigning. Write to his MP etc..

Just reading this thread's used up my patience for the day, @Woman355! Can't imagine living with it 😬

On the bright side, he won't be boring you with Covid vaccines for much longer. Pretty soon he'll have added the World Economic Forum, electro-magnetic radiation, E numbers and Bill Gates to his repertoire of terror. It'll be a bit more varied.

Instead of divorcing him, you'll be able to put him in a shed lined with chicken wire (Faraday cage) and a computer (wired connection). Feed him adequately, and you won't see him for years.

Actually this country is not a country of free speech. Hate speech is not allowed. You can get into trouble for saying certain things and too fucking right.

Sweetheart, you are full of hatred even from the way you wrote that. Are you ok? And have you been in trouble with the authorities for hate speech?

Bollocks. "The majority" are just fine. Would you prefer we return to the Dark Ages and pop potatoes in our socks when we have a cold?

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:33

@LLea3 so no alternative then? I'll leave you with this... Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

ParanoidJo · 17/02/2024 09:40

I’ve noticed that people are quick to brand other people’s differences of opinions relating to Covid as conspiracy theories. Doing so slowly and imperceptibly erodes the chance for debate. We’re too quick not to listen to / interrogate / investigate / reflect on differences of opinion, I think.

imagine a dinner table where everyone thought the same as you? Or a talk show. Or a Black Mirror episode!

Lea3 · 17/02/2024 09:41

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:33

@LLea3 so no alternative then? I'll leave you with this... Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Given the academic credentials you've suggested you have and evaluate others by, I would have thought that at some stage you'd have learned about the false dilemma fallacy?

Scepticism is justified and doesn't necessarily require an immediate alternative to be valid.

YoureALizardHarry11 · 16/02/2024 21:20

Study after study shows that conspiracy theorists, by and large, lack intelligence and are under educated with no analytical skills. That also plays out in real life as I’ve never met one I thought was remotely intelligent. You can tell by the way they type/talk as well as the way they repeat the same sound bites with no originality. Give it a rest. Yes, it would annoy me and I’d divorce 😂

I wouldn't call my friend who keeps going on about how the upper middle classes want us all to be serfs unintelligent and uneducated, because she isn't. What she does do is spend a lot of time on sites like X and social media generally, and from experience I know that you get sucked into the bubble chamber of conspiracy theories and they all start sounding completely plausible. It's one reason why I don't log onto X any more - I didn't like the angry obsessed person I was becoming.

All I can do with her is shut it down when she starts.

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:48

Scientists are skeptics. Where do you get your 'knowledge' from?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/02/2024 09:52

Genocide by vaccine to stop people dying of covid. The least efficient method of killing millions of people ever invented.

Lea3 · 17/02/2024 10:01

Perfect28 · 17/02/2024 09:48

Scientists are skeptics. Where do you get your 'knowledge' from?

You seem to be implying that because scientists are also sceptics, it therefore follows that I should believe them.

However, the statement "You are a fellow sceptic, and therefore I blindly believe you" would be nonsensical. Scepticism requires critical thinking and scrutiny of information, rather than blind acceptance based on shared beliefs or affiliations.

You've already made it clear that your own beliefs are based on faith and appeals to authority (hence your demands for my credentials), but I don't work that way.
