To call my baby Joan?

What do you think?

I’m 5 months pregnant and having a girl.
Ive just watched “maid of Orleans” video by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark and had a brainwave. Joan as in Joan of Arc.

Classic, moving story/heroine, devout catholic. The name Joan has suddenly taken on new meaning for me!

Joan of Arc was also always my favourite bit in Bill & Teds excellent adventure ❤️

Or am I just suffering from baby brain? Is it awful?

It’s a beautiful name. And reckon definitely due a comeback.

a friend recently called her daughter Jean which I also thought was lovely

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/02/2024 23:45

I find Joan a bit plain. I love Joanna though.

No, no, no! I'd take Joan over Jean any day of the week! Shock

It's absolutely awful. Disgustingly boring name.

Thats uncalled for grow up and be an adult the only disgusting thing i can read is your comment.
My mother is called joan.
Its alot better than what some parents call their kids going by your username you got your head in the clouds star gazing.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/02/2024 23:47

I think it’s a nice name.

Berlinlover · 15/02/2024 23:47

It’s a very dull and boring name.

PickAChew · 15/02/2024 23:57

It's a lovely name.

I gave Ds1 an old fashioned and rarely used middle name and Ds2 a first name that was definitely not top 50. Both adults. DS1's middle name is quite well used, now, and ds2's name is now shouted at every primary school gate.

Panjandrum123 · 15/02/2024 23:58

Your choice OP but not a name I’d pick, close family member had this name and hated it. But it’s your daughter, if you like it go for it.

Tatonka · 15/02/2024 23:58

Unless you plan to give birth to an 80yo, YABU

JubileeJumps · 15/02/2024 23:58

We have a Joanie locally. She’s 7. I love it.

madeinmanc · 15/02/2024 23:59

Her name was "Jeanne" not "Joan" so YABVU.

🙄

In English it was Joan.

Hysteria30 · 16/02/2024 00:05

I think it’s lovely. sometimes a name just feels right! reminds me of the only fools final episode and Rodney calls his baby Joan after his mum and it just seemed so lovely

Rewis · 16/02/2024 00:06

Problem with baby names is that when asked everyone has an opinion. But then you meet an adult with a name you don't analyse the name. Would I name my kid Jim? Probably not. But when I meet a Jim, do I think to my self "wow, what a horrid name. Poor thing. Shockingly disgusting for parents to do that"? Nope. I just think "that person is called Jim".

Is Joan my absolutely favourite name in the whole world? No. But neither are most of the names. It is totally fine, normal name. So I'd say, go for it!

RogueFemale · 16/02/2024 00:06

I don't like it, not a pretty name, just rather dull and plain.

Herewegoagain84 · 16/02/2024 00:06

Groan. That’s all I think of.

Notthatcatagain · 16/02/2024 00:13

Well it seems that hardly anyone likes it. Excellent, your Joan will be the only one in her class, brownie pack, ballet class, sports group. Its a pretty name so go for it. (Can you tell that my mum chose the most popular name of the year when I was born)

user1477391263 · 16/02/2024 00:13

I like it and it’s coming back. Why would kids tease her about it? Some adults will associate it with their grandparents, kids will not make the connection. Anyway, Joan is coming back, I’ve heard of a few recently.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2024 00:16

Super name!

I know two little Joans under age five. There are others thinking along the same lines as you, OP.

Phoeebee · 16/02/2024 00:16

Awful

Winnipeggy · 16/02/2024 00:17

I really don't like it but conversely I LOVE Joni and was on my list for a girl

VampireWeekday · 16/02/2024 00:18

Lovely name. These names are really making a come back and anyway when she's an adult there won't be loads of older Joans around, the association will have gone.

Irene, Agnes, Ada, Ivy....all these names are back in. My favourite girls name right now is Alice, which I think has a similar vibe.
