To call my baby Joan?

What do you think?

I’m 5 months pregnant and having a girl.
Ive just watched “maid of Orleans” video by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark and had a brainwave. Joan as in Joan of Arc.

Classic, moving story/heroine, devout catholic. The name Joan has suddenly taken on new meaning for me!

Joan of Arc was also always my favourite bit in Bill & Teds excellent adventure ❤️

Or am I just suffering from baby brain? Is it awful?

I like it, Joanie reminds me of Happy Dayz. But Joan will always remind of OFAH and the glow in the dark headstone.

Macramepotholder · 15/02/2024 21:50

Love it! Also love Jean.

FabFebHalfTerm · 15/02/2024 21:51

@SecondChancesAtLife I'm sorry, but I don't like it, to me it's not old enough to be 'coming back'.

but all that matters is that YOU live it, you probably wouldn't like my choices!!

best wishes xx

crumbledog · 15/02/2024 21:51

Joan (my mums name) and for that reason is a bit of and older persons name, but is has nice sound, that I’m sure will make a come back. Don’t like Joanie or Joey derivatives of it.

Pintally · 15/02/2024 21:52

I know someone with a young daughter called Dorothy. I know an older Dorothy who hates her name with a passion.

I’m not particularly into this trend of revitalising old names for the sake of it. They went out of fashion for a very good reason….. might seem “cutesy” on a baby (though it usually isn’t) but these kids have to grow into adults and use these names….

elizzza · 15/02/2024 21:52

It’s lovely. There’s a Joan at my son’s preschool, along with a Nora and Penny and Edith - there’s definitely a fashion for that generation of names.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/02/2024 21:53

Yes it's awful. Just reminds me of an old lady....Joan who likes to moan!

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 15/02/2024 21:54

I know a Joanie but I prefer Joan.

Joanne might have a comeback?

Porageeater · 15/02/2024 21:54

You never see the ‘comeback’ names coming. Until suddenly there are lots of little Gladys and Gertrude’s running about.

Minfilia · 15/02/2024 21:54

It’s not great. Personally I would rather have something less controversial.

EndofDaze · 15/02/2024 21:56

Love the name because it reminds me of someone dear to me who is no longer with us. Cute if you nickname “Joanie”. Think it’s due a come back. X

SweetBirdsong · 15/02/2024 21:57

😬 I'm gonna say ...

NO.

garlictwist · 15/02/2024 21:57

YABU.

grapestar · 15/02/2024 21:58

Retro

SomeCatFromJapan · 15/02/2024 21:59

I love it. I think it's due a revival so you should get in there first.

SirenSays · 15/02/2024 21:59

I only know two Joans, both hate their names. And I'd worry about bullying. Here they'd be Granny in primary and moan in secondary.

theduchessofspork · 15/02/2024 22:00

Moany Joanie

I think it’s awful and it’s probably your hormones but I do know a couple of little Joanies, so some people like it

Joanna is much nicer though

Sofafor2for1 · 15/02/2024 22:01

It's a fine traditional name. My niece has it as her middle name. If you like it then go for it!

Universalsnail · 15/02/2024 22:02

I would if you like it. I don't know why people are moaning about it. It's far better then many of the names people call their kids now that aren't even names 😂 but I'm a fan of old names. Would have called my kid Dorothy if OH had agreed

Katieflake · 15/02/2024 22:02

yes I like it. Really like Joni too

CheerioDarling · 15/02/2024 22:02

I like it; really like it actually.

25 years ago Ruby was unheard of in anyone under pension age, and 15 years ago so was Ivy. Margot too, she was the snobby one on The Good Life, not a cute name for a little girl. Things change and there are room for more Joans in the world.

wonderstuff · 15/02/2024 22:03

I love it. Really strong.

Furrydogmum · 15/02/2024 22:03

For me Joan is up there with Eileen, Irene and Mavis as nope not even If you paid me.

LlynTegid · 15/02/2024 22:04

A name I think to be remembered as part of history, not one to use today.

As for OMD, their lead singer gave us Atomic Kitten, and so I urge everyone to never listen to their music again as a result.

vincettenoir · 15/02/2024 22:05

I like Joan, Joni and Jean.
