To call my baby Joan?

What do you think?

I’m 5 months pregnant and having a girl.
Ive just watched “maid of Orleans” video by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark and had a brainwave. Joan as in Joan of Arc.

Classic, moving story/heroine, devout catholic. The name Joan has suddenly taken on new meaning for me!

Joan of Arc was also always my favourite bit in Bill & Teds excellent adventure ❤️

Or am I just suffering from baby brain? Is it awful?

Very dated

bridgetreilly · 16/02/2024 01:26

Definitely do it!

WandaWonder · 16/02/2024 01:29

I think there is enough younger people around that to them it would be a name like any other

And not think of Joan Collins

Lwrenn · 16/02/2024 02:10

Love it!

Names can't be pleasing everyone.

My kids have old names and we live in an area where there is mostly newer and American names. Lots of Peyton/Sawyer/Jayden's and my kids haven't ever been bullied for their older names.

Some of the most popular MN names Persephone eg, are names I'd never use, they're lovely but not my jam, my kids names won't ever being used by Persephone's mum and dad either because they're very typical, old working class names. My DC are named after people who've inspired me or are family names.

oakleaffy · 16/02/2024 02:16

Herewegoagain84 · 16/02/2024 00:06

Groan. That’s all I think of.

This made me snort with laughter!
It reminds me of Moan.

StarTwirl · 16/02/2024 02:22

Oh dear

Joan has always been a name associated with the dullest most boring women living a life of drudgery amounting to nothing

Sorry to all the Joan's out there but it's not an inspirational name at all

PurBal · 16/02/2024 02:25

Absolutely adore it. A very dear friend was called Joan and she was the life and soul of the party. She was strong and courageous. Couldn’t choose a better name.

Flottie · 16/02/2024 02:53

It’s pretty bad imo but at least it’s an actual name…

Tomatina · 16/02/2024 02:53

It's been out of fashion for ages, which of course means it's overdue for a revival. Whether you like it or not is as subjective as with every other name.

asdunno · 16/02/2024 03:20

Love it, pretty but not too popular

ChristmasCwtch · 16/02/2024 03:27

Awful. Joan, moan.

Such a drab name.

tutttutt · 16/02/2024 07:34

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 15/02/2024 22:36

Joan is a right good name.

The opposers probably fall into two camps: the Octavia and Imogen people; or the Kylee and Kim folk.

Go for it. If the scan turns out to be wrong consider John. Both Joan and John are due for decades of strong revival.

I'm in neither of your camps. But I don't like Joan. I don't like Mona, Morag or Warren either. They are greyish-brown names. Names that conjure up images of wallflowers that no one notices 😔

Maxus · 16/02/2024 08:05

I love it. When I was a child Jack was considered an old name and look what happened? No one would say it's an old man name now. Also Elsie has made a comeback. Go for it.

Maireas · 16/02/2024 08:08

You'll be ahead of the curve!
I never thought I'd be teaching classes with kids called Elsie, Stan, Alfie and Mabel, yet here we are!
I associate it with the wonderful Joan Baez.

Tessisme · 16/02/2024 08:46

Joan has always been a name associated with the dullest most boring women living a life of drudgery amounting to nothing

Oh I dunno - Joan Armatrading, Joan Baez, Joan Collins, Joan Jett to name but a few😊😊

OrlandointheWilderness · 16/02/2024 08:49

Love it.

x2boys · 16/02/2024 08:51

Names come in and out of fashion ,I sounds old fashioned now but ,when I was at school.I had a friend who had a very old fashioned name ," Grace" ,this was the 80,s now here's loads of Graces.

Notsoslim · 16/02/2024 08:54

Allican · 15/02/2024 21:43

I love it and think it’s probably coming back. Joanie is really cute too.

Joanie is lovely. Had a school mate called Joni but I think pronounced the same.

2chocolateoranges · 16/02/2024 08:55

It’s a no from me it’s bland and boring aswell as so old fashioned.

dh wanted to give our daughter it as a middle name as remrberance of his mum, it was a huge no from me.

Windymillering · 16/02/2024 08:57

FaiIureToLunch · 15/02/2024 21:45

Is it honestly the best you can come up with?

that’s all you have to think about.

What a horrible comment
And you have no idea what the Oap has to think about

Windymillering · 16/02/2024 08:58

I think it’s lovely. Classic but unusual now

and all the versions you or she could choose like Joanie and JoJo are perfect for variety and working out what suits her

nimski · 16/02/2024 09:01

I know a 7yo called Joan. Not my cup of tea but she's not teased as far as I know! I assumed it was a family name.

Writerscompanion · 16/02/2024 09:10

I love it but then I've got a daughter with one of the 'old-fashioned' names frequently mentioned here. Joan's classic, with an interesting history, and when names are re-used much later, people won't be thinking of the older generation who had them. It makes me think of Joan from Mad Men.

Redlarge · 16/02/2024 09:12

Its lovely
