To call my baby Joan?

What do you think?

I’m 5 months pregnant and having a girl.
Ive just watched “maid of Orleans” video by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark and had a brainwave. Joan as in Joan of Arc.

Classic, moving story/heroine, devout catholic. The name Joan has suddenly taken on new meaning for me!

Joan of Arc was also always my favourite bit in Bill & Teds excellent adventure ❤️

Or am I just suffering from baby brain? Is it awful?

It’s great! I think it’s already making a comeback. I know a little Joni as well.

Joan is a right good name.

The opposers probably fall into two camps: the Octavia and Imogen people; or the Kylee and Kim folk.

Go for it. If the scan turns out to be wrong consider John. Both Joan and John are due for decades of strong revival.

John is a great name too

BobbyBiscuits · 15/02/2024 22:48

@SweetBirdsong Haha, a bit harsh but I know what you mean, Mona is quite sad isn't it. I like Jean as a middle name. Like Billie Jean or something. It reminds me of Bowie, and jeans (the clothes) lol. It was also my nan's name. (Not that I knew her well).
Each to their own I guess. I used to like some batshit kids names so it's a good job I didn't get pregnant in my 20s, lol.

Ladybird69 · 15/02/2024 22:49

Love it. My mother’s godmother name was Joanie and I had Joan as my middle name. Wished I’d used it as one of my own children’s names. She was a kind beautiful soul so would have been nice to have carried it on,but shit of exh said no and threw all of his toys out of the pram! Also had auntie Evelyn called Evie. She was a sweetheart to.

Woodenwonder · 15/02/2024 22:51

It's very cute indeed.

AnOldCynic · 15/02/2024 22:52

Joanie and Chachi. Go for it.

Pippa12 · 15/02/2024 22:57

My young niece just called her new baby Joan, it’s gone down really well and she suits it. Lovely name!

Things is folk will have an opinion whatever you say your going to call your baby. Figure it out and then say your chosen name with confidence, do not give people the impression you want their opinion.

Joan is going to be very cool again soon I'm pretty sure of it. There's a really trendy NYC ad/branding agency called Joan https://joancreative.com/

I'm pretty good at spotting trends and I have a feeling Joan (along with names like Mary and Jane and others of that vintage) are going to be the next wave of Avas/Olivias/Ivys etc.

These things come in generational waves, I think you're just slightly ahead of most people in your tastes!

I love some of the older names but not Joan. As someone said about Dorothy, think of her as a teen or an adult. There are nicer names, but it's not as bad as the trend for surnames as first names.

I know two teenage Dorothy's and they both love the name - sometimes shorten it, but not always. Dorothy Parker, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Lamour etc didn't struggle as adults. My DC's class is full of 'old lady' names, so for this generation it will be totally normal. It's a natural cycle of names coming back around.

OP if you like Joan, go with it.

YouveGotAFastCar · 15/02/2024 23:19

It’s my MiLs name, so it’s a hard no here.

Shes in her early 70s and thinks it’s dated even as her name.

Joni/e is cute.

JMSA · 15/02/2024 23:19

The teenage girl years are hard enough, without being called Joan the Moan.
I guess it's cute for a little one though, especially if Joanie/Joni.

I'm sorry, I'm really trying. But it's a frumpy, middle-aged name.

CountryShepherd · 15/02/2024 23:20

It's my DD second name, after her grandma who died before she was born. I love it. She's got a proper old lady name as her first name too!

PhoenixStarbeamer · 15/02/2024 23:22

It's absolutely awful. Disgustingly boring name.

Thinkcarefully123 · 15/02/2024 23:26

I have a difficult name. I wish my DPs had considered things more. Please remember this is an actual person you are naming, not just a newborn who won't have any problems. When little one is at school/ becomes a teenager/ goes to uni/ gets a job. Something cute to you can become a big problem in that person's life and it really isn't fair.

BIossomtoes · 15/02/2024 22:13

Those old fashioned names are so much nicer than some of the made up bollocks ones some people saddle their kids with.

Absolutely

Mavis Joan? Grin

Harsh. And completely wrong.

DramaAlpaca · 15/02/2024 23:36

No. I want to like it, it's short, classic and strong, all of which I like in a name. But it's just so flat and dull sounding.

conviviality · 15/02/2024 23:38

Love it and I know 2 Joanie’s who are primary age

TerriPie · 15/02/2024 23:40

Great name and one I suspect will be topping the charts on the next few years due to the way older sounding names come back after 4 generations

positivesliceofpie · 15/02/2024 23:40

I like it its a normal name.
Most names now are just stupid you really dont hear old names or just normal names.
Always some trendy funky silly names.

seeingdots · 15/02/2024 23:42

Definitely due a revival!

Ophy83 · 15/02/2024 23:42

"Joan" of Arc's name was Jeanne not Joan

UrsulaBelle · 15/02/2024 23:43

I quite like it, but prefer Jean. It’s softer, somehow. Jeannie and Joanie/Joni are nice too.

CryptoFascist · 15/02/2024 23:43

it's a cool name, I like it a lot.
