To call my baby Joan?

What do you think?

I’m 5 months pregnant and having a girl.
Ive just watched “maid of Orleans” video by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark and had a brainwave. Joan as in Joan of Arc.

Classic, moving story/heroine, devout catholic. The name Joan has suddenly taken on new meaning for me!

Joan of Arc was also always my favourite bit in Bill & Teds excellent adventure ❤️

Or am I just suffering from baby brain? Is it awful?

Joan is my middle name and it was my Nana's name. I like it.

Ελλe · 16/02/2024 16:42

I like it.

Joanie is one of my top girl names I thinks it’s adorable! And even better that it has a special meaning to you IMO

Ελλe · 16/02/2024 16:43

and to be honest there will always be someone that doesn’t like your name choice, you should do what you like

Hernameisdeborah · 16/02/2024 19:28

I think Joan is lovely. Names go in and out of fashion all the time. When I was young, names like George, Arthur and Harry were considered very old fashioned but there are lots of them now.

pomers · 16/02/2024 20:11

Love it, beautiful name

Rewis · 16/02/2024 21:03

WeeOrcadian · 16/02/2024 12:43

No. The last Joan I knew was 89. Don't do that to your child.

Well, names come back in 100 year cycles. Death and birth announcements have the same names so this just supports it is due to a comeback.

SmokedPaprikaPuffs · 16/02/2024 21:09

I'd go for June instead. There's no logic to it but some old lady names are in , like Elsie and Violet but I don't think Joan has made a comeback. June is more in, possibly due to the handmaids tale.

mangobananasmooothie · 16/02/2024 21:49

Just awful.
So many beautiful names to choose from and you want to go for Joan. Joni would be marginally better.

Moanie Joanie... I want to like Joan but I just can't

This was my first thought too.

I like it and it’s coming back. Why would kids tease her about it? Some adults will associate it with their grandparents, kids will not make the connection. Anyway, Joan is coming back, I’ve heard of a few recently.

My DD has an old fashioned first name that everyone has heard of but in a school of 2500, there isn't another one. There were 47 girls born in the UK the same year with her name.

Whereas I am of the Susan/Sarah/Jane/Tracey era and there are at least 5 of us at every gathering.

FUPAgirl · 18/02/2024 11:34

What about Joni? It's similar but with a modern twist.

OnGoldenPond · 18/02/2024 17:57

How about Jeanne (the actual French name of Joan of Arc)?

CecilyP · 18/02/2024 18:25

Astrak · 16/02/2024 13:02

Ghastly. Dreadfully old-fashioned. But your baby, your choice.

But loads of ghastly, dreadfully old-fashioned names have come back into fashion - Ada, Ruby, Elsie, Mabel - names I never thought I’d here again!

Joan is slightly less old fashioned - many still around in their 80s, but possibly due for a comeback. OP could be ahead of the curve with this choice!

TheFifthTellytubby · 20/02/2024 11:37

Tessisme · 16/02/2024 12:14

Not sure why the OP would go for Jeanne as an alternative. It sounds absolutely nothing like Joan.

Maybe because she wants to name her daughter after someone whose name it actually was?

ladygindiva · 15/02/2024 21:43

Why not? Joanie is cute. And if Joan is a little " old lady" ish that's highly trendy at the mo, and you can use Jo, JoJo, Joanie, Joey etc as nicknames. I really like it!

My cat is called Joan. She is called Joanie, JoJo, Joanie Joan, Joanie Girl, and just Joan. It suits her.

brislereg · 07/10/2024 15:59

What about Jean?

I don't actually mind Joan and I think Joanie, Joni and Joanna are all nice too.

Butteredtoast55 · 07/10/2024 16:02

One of the nicest children I ever taught was called Joanie and absolutely nobody picked on her or thought the name ridiculous. Go for it.

Beezknees · 07/10/2024 16:16

Guys this thread is from February and OP was 5 months pregnant then. She'll have already had the baby and named it. Check thread dates!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/10/2024 22:03

Terrible.Joan the Moan.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 08/10/2024 09:27

Moany Joan. If you are having to think about whether it's a good name or not then it's probably not!!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/10/2024 09:31

I’m afraid I always think of it as a ‘plain’ name. Probably influenced by the line in IIRC Shakespeare - ‘…while greasy Joan doth keel the pot.’

BTW ‘Joan’ of Arc wasn’t actually Joan anyway - unless I’m misremembering she was ‘Jeanne’ d’Arc.

You need to get in touch with Andy McCluskey, he's been getting it wrong for 43 years.

Surely that wasn't 43 years ago 😱
