To call my baby Joan?

What do you think?

I’m 5 months pregnant and having a girl.
Ive just watched “maid of Orleans” video by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark and had a brainwave. Joan as in Joan of Arc.

Classic, moving story/heroine, devout catholic. The name Joan has suddenly taken on new meaning for me!

Joan of Arc was also always my favourite bit in Bill & Teds excellent adventure ❤️

Or am I just suffering from baby brain? Is it awful?

I knew a Joan she died a few years ago sophisticated spitfire of a lady, great underused name

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 15/02/2024 22:27

It’s great. And what excellent taste in music you have 😉

BobbyBiscuits · 15/02/2024 22:28

I kind of think it reminds of "moan' like it sounds a bit sad and miserable. I prefer Jean. But if you like it go for it. Joan or Arc is quite cool to be named after I guess. If she ends up disliking it she can call herself Jo for short. Have you thought of a middle name? Maybe something a bit more exotic if you use Joan as the first name? Or could you use Joan as the middle name maybe?

LynnImnotdrivingaminimetro · 15/02/2024 22:29

Joan and joanie are both lovely.

rwalker · 15/02/2024 22:29

I absolutely love it because it’s so bloody awful

Shivermetimbers13 · 15/02/2024 22:29

Joan is a lovely name.

Fetaa · 15/02/2024 22:30

Like it. Also Joanie

Scirocco · 15/02/2024 22:31

I like it. I know a couple of young Joans/Joanies, and I really liked Joan in the US-based version of Sherlock Holmes.

QueenBean22 · 15/02/2024 22:32

If you like it go for it.

Chouquettes · 15/02/2024 22:35

It’s lovely. It’s nice in French too ‘Jeanne’

aintnospringchicken · 15/02/2024 22:35

I know a Joan in her 60s and she hated her name when she was younger and at school. She now just accepts that's what her name is .

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 15/02/2024 22:36

Joan is a right good name.

The opposers probably fall into two camps: the Octavia and Imogen people; or the Kylee and Kim folk.

Go for it. If the scan turns out to be wrong consider John. Both Joan and John are due for decades of strong revival.

tutttutt · 15/02/2024 22:24

How is Joan your dream name? 😂 I'm being facetious because of course you can live any name you want. But Joan? That's a bit like saying Warren is a dream name. Or Arnold

Because I love it! I think Joan Fontaine is super glamorous, St Joan is a female icon, and Joanie in Happy Days was cute :-) and I think it’s rare now and I like names that are less common :-)

Got no choice really has she? 😆

This too!

Prelapsarianhag · 15/02/2024 22:38

Bit dull mate. Your kid your choice. The young of the future will not have old fashioned ideas of the name.

ODFOx · 15/02/2024 22:38

Poor child would get picked on.

By whom? I have never heard 'most people with your name are older' as a playground taunt!

Cinai · 15/02/2024 22:39

I quite like it but I’d go for Joanne / Joanna. NN Jo / Joey / Annie.

Exactly. It's right up there with Mona. I also don't like Jean. Just such frumpy names IMO.

I know 2 people who have daughters called Nora and Barbara. Such cringe and frumpy names. I just feel sorry for the kids! JMO.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 15/02/2024 22:39

I like it but prefer Joni. Other children won't think it's old fashioned, my DGD has a friend called Irene and doesn't think anything of it.

Mapletreelane · 15/02/2024 22:40

What about Siobhan, which is the Irish version of Joan?

Yogatoga1 · 15/02/2024 22:40

judgedreadful · 15/02/2024 21:46

Poor child would get picked on.

Do you normally make your decisions based on what others might think of it?

bullying doesn’t work like that. Bullies will pick on a kid for absolutely anything, real or imagined. Name, ears, parents car, money, lack of money, wrong trainers, right trainers, it doesn’t matter.

more important to teach your kid to understand it’s the bullies problem and to stand up to it, than teach them to worry they aren’t good enough because their name or whatever is “wrong”

Collywobblewobbles · 15/02/2024 22:40

I love the name Joan, I think its beautiful

Davros · 15/02/2024 22:41

I don't like the Joan of Arc reference but there is (or was) Joan Fontaine, Joan Crawford...

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/02/2024 22:44

It's my Mam's name. I prefer Joannie but Joan is having definitely becoming more popular.
