To not pick up dog poo...

... when in a quiet forest, but to flick it with a stick into dense undergrowth instead?

I don't see any issue with this, but I've got a feeling lots will disagree with me, so I wanted to get some other opinions.

9 million dogs in the UK in 2019, 13 million in 2022 (source: Statista). More dogs comes with more shit everywhere, sadly.

So do more people

Papyrophile · 14/02/2024 21:50

It is my understanding (I could be misinformed) that the UK's civil servants wrote most of the basic EU's food, farming and hygiene guidance back in the 1980s. Their practices and standards are based on where we were 30 or 40 years ago. I would not eat pork from Denmark or Danish bacon, because their food hygiene and animal husbandry rules are so slack.

Ah that’s ok then. Just kick it into the woods.

@Prunesqualler

I was asking for clarification on the post made by @Minymile at 20:01.

Apologies.
Thought you were making a general query to all so I answered.

Papyrophile · 14/02/2024 21:51

Whoops, might have mixed up my posts.

@Theminer
Most recent reports from the uk are not recent ( it was a quick look though)

Here, however, is one from 2022
Scientist noting it’s not possible to remove the oestrogen in current treatment plants
See attached 4 para down second page
Hope you’ve got good eyesight

Thanks, I think that was the one of the ones I just scanned.

I’ve realised it was the soya/oestrogen link I was thinking of, not oestrogen in the water.

Basically

oOmoonhaOo · 14/02/2024 21:48

Because no one’s going to see it, or stand in it and it will degrade a lot quicker.

The point is why not stretch the same effort to clear up dog shit in a forest as you'd do on a pavement outside a school? Might burn some calories off that lazy arse of theirs picking it up off in the forest. It's like saying it's ok to speed in a country lane but not in a built up area.

oOmoonhaOo · 14/02/2024 21:47

Is that why they get hung on trees.. maximise the light?

And there was me thinking it was bloody mice eating them 🤣🤣🤣🤣😳

Because is not having the same impact 🙄
and I’m certainly not lazy, and don’t need to burn off any more calories.

Hormone use in dairy cattle was banned in the EU (so including the UK) in 1988.

Sorry, haven't read the full thread. Has there been any real research into this? Comparing real options. I live in the countryside and 'stick and flick'. I'm perfectly willing to change this though, with evidence. Be sure, no child is going to walk into my flicked poo because of the location, I'm really confident of that and don't need posters coming along to say they might because they won't.

The environmental issue needs weighing up though. My dog eats ordinary supermarket dog food. Would their poo do less harm just waisting away in the bushes or being put, in a bag, in a bin. Adding up the damage it might do to the environment just left, v the damage of the bag and the collection truck and disposal.
Anyone know?

Also, most country lanes are national speed limit… which is often impossible or down right dangerous to reach. Whereas built up areas are usually 20-40.

Sign of someone who doesn’t venture away from built up areas much?

The main issue with this thread… townies worried about people stepping in dog shit halfway down a steep slope, covered in wooded debris in the middle of fecking nowhere!

Of course it has the same impact. The same health risk remains whether it's in a forest or outside a school. Bit like speeding in a country lane vs speeding in a built up area. Same risk exists but different setting.

No it fucking doesn’t. In both cases 🙄

Kendodd · 14/02/2024 22:02

And with regards cow pats or anything else. Irrelevant, that's not were talking about, we're talking about the best way to deal with dog poo. I think 'stick and flick' (live in countryside) but willing to rethink (with evidence).

Laughable last sentence.

Pick up your dog shit you lazy arse. As I say, you exercise this caution in a built up area, why not in a forest? It comes down to laziness in my eyes. No one watching. Ah fuck it, can't be bothered.

Are you telling me that a child is just as likely to step in shit in the forest, away from a path in debris as they are outside a school?!

Are you also saying that doing 60 on a county lane poses the same risk as doing 60 though a village?

Theminer · 14/02/2024 22:05

@Kendodd buying actually biodegradable/compostable poo bags rather than the plastic ones labelled as biodegradable (but actually aren’t under a lot of circumstances) helps.

Yeah. If you have kids, you'd know kids like to crawl around under trees, make dens in trees, etc.

Where I live, rural high ground and touristy, the lakes have all had algae bloom recently. Lakes which supply water to big cities. Think about that.
