To ask what the appeal is for Taylor Swift?

Maybe it's just me, but I find her music really average and I don't think she's anything special.

The Chief's Super Bowl win seems overshadowed by her and I don't understand why. I watch a lot of sports and I don't recall a team's final win ever being mostly about one of the players' spouse/partner.

AIBU to just not understand the appeal?

I mean she's no harm but do find her overrated

I don't think she ever was with Matty Healy.

Actually, you're probably correct. There were never any pictures of them kissing or anything like that.

seafoamgreenhair · 12/02/2024 20:45

What else could you ask for as a pop artist?

Originality. Art. Charisma.

Sundaysunda · 12/02/2024 20:47

I did used to find her songs quite annoying but have liked a few recently. In saying that though I don’t get what the sudden hype is. There definitely didn’t used to be this mass hysteria over her and she’s been around for years 🤔 I don’t know if it’s just the tiktok generation or what. Sometimes I think it’s like the way men support a football team. You have to question whether they do actually even really like the thing they’re claiming to like, it’s as if sometimes they’re just there for the hype 😂

Americano75 · 12/02/2024 20:52

I like a good few of her songs and I'm middle aged. I also think she's a great role model for my own daughters. Courtney Love, who did heroin whilst pregnant and had her child removed multiple times? Not so much.

Growlybear83 · 12/02/2024 20:57

I've actually never heard her 😆😆. I listen to music that I like quite a lot, but I really dislike most pop type music.

TheTwirlyPoos · 12/02/2024 21:03

Im starting to think that the 'obsessive swiftie' trope has been created by the CONSTANT questions about why people like her.

It's genuinely a bit silly.

NashvilleQueen · 12/02/2024 21:05

She's hounded by press wherever she goes and recently a persistent stalker was sent to prison. No wonder she flies on a private jet.

People can like whatever music they choose but it is truly ridiculous to say she lacks talent. She's been famous for getting on 20 years and has evolved through her writing over that time. You don't get the awards, the chart hits and the recognition from fellow artists by being average.

She really stirs up the ire of the 'you won't have heard of my favourite band' crowd on here. There's loads of music I don't like but I wouldn't be so confident that my opinion is superior to anyone else's.

StarvingMarvin222 · 12/02/2024 21:06

She's in the category of people I dislike

To me there's just something "off" about her.
I just can't put my finger on it.

TheTwirlyPoos · 12/02/2024 21:06

Honestly reading this thread the people that are coming off as 'crazy' are the people who seem desparate to have a pop at her for absolutely no reason. It's totally bizarre.

I have never seen this said about a man. Mostly just Taylor Swift and Meghan Markle!!!

Hoplolly · 12/02/2024 19:17

Jesus. Who would want Courtney Love as a role model. And she's hardly a music legend either.

why do people even need musicians to be role models??

So drippy.

people can be a fan of a musician without wanting to emulate them.

Because lots of teens like them and then emulate them, so if it’s someone your kid really likes it’s better it’s someone like Taylor, than someone like Kanye, love or Richards.

sure, that's how life works...

But... That Is how life works?

AngeloMysterioso · 12/02/2024 21:37

I like her.
I’m tired of people who don’t like her or are ambivalent about her asking people who do like her to explain themselves.
Beyoncé fans don’t have to deal with this snobby crap.

When I was 15 I was a massive fan of The Velvet Underground and The Doors. And yet I never tried heroin. Imagine that! Shock

That isn't really true, she has been the object of devoted and at times obsessional fandom since the start of her career. Some people loathe her, I remember in 2016 or so the whole 'snake' thing when she was accused of lying about a conversation that she had had with Kanye West, then it transpired that, surprise surprise, Kim and Kanye were the ones who had lied. There was the whole 'squad goals' thing and also Hiddleswift, and then there were the two lockdown albums. Her popularity/notoriety has been consistent throughout her entire career.

alwaysmovingforwards · 12/02/2024 22:19

Her and her team have created the Taylor Swift brand. Plus she's a very hard worker.

I like Taylor more than I like Beyonce, but this actually isn't true. A lot of people complain that Bey is overhyped. I like them both as people (or rather, their public image, I don't know them personally obvs) but prefer Taylor's music.

LovelyTheresa · 12/02/2024 22:28

The more I think about it, the more the OP annoys me. Both for the obvious moaning bandwagon jumping and for the grammatical error: it should be 'what is the appeal OF Taylor Swift', not 'FOR Taylor Swift. Perhaps part of her appeal is that she can use prepositions correctly.
