To ask what the appeal is for Taylor Swift?

Maybe it's just me, but I find her music really average and I don't think she's anything special.

The Chief's Super Bowl win seems overshadowed by her and I don't understand why. I watch a lot of sports and I don't recall a team's final win ever being mostly about one of the players' spouse/partner.

AIBU to just not understand the appeal?

Tell me this doesn’t resonate with a good proportion of mumsnet:

Storm coming, good husband
Bad omen
Dragged my feet right down the aisle
At the house lonely, good money
I'd pay if you'd just know me
Seemed like the right thing at the time
You know there's many different ways that you can kill the one you love
The slowest way is never loving them enough
Do you really want to know where I was April 29th?
Do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life?

TheGoogleMum · 12/02/2024 17:14

I don't dislike her but am not wowed by her. Not sure why so many are obsessed! Although she seems like a good person to have as a role model so that's good at least

Gowlett · 12/02/2024 17:15

Bucakwoo, loads of interesting stuff there! Thanks.
Yeah, she’s a global powerhouse no doubt. And the commercial possibilities / money is endless! But she’s not owned to the degree that so many female pop stars have been. At least it seems be herself in the driving seat, mostly.

Regarding Travis Kelce, I mean it’s dynamite for his career being with her. Of course! But I think they are a good match. His temper, is that just on the pitch though? It’s sport. Haven’t heard of him doing anything untoward otherwise. That said, I never even heard of him before Taylor Swift…

You said none of the men come close to being as bad as she is. That’s an appallingly false statement. Kanye west?? The Rolling Stones and their drugs? The lost prophet paedo? I mean cmon.

I meant none compare in terms of her level of fame and the money she's currently raking in. Again I don't judge her for being a capitalist although find it amusing it's so at odds with her relatable persona; just find it interesting that lots seem to think she's just an innocent country turned pop singer who happened to have fallen into this level of fame through purely hard graft and no questionable actions.

Oh and as a mother of two obsessed Swifties- I'm delighted they follow someone who is truly a great role model. You don't see her falling around drunk, she does a lot for charity, works incredibly hard, takes care of her family and shows incredible kindness to those she meets. She doesn't objectify herself or thrust about simulating sex. It's a refreshing change and a breath of fresh air.

She doesn't need to either as the music sells itself.

Female artists who use their bodies/sex to sell records/streams are usually lacking musically.

I don’t think she pretends to be anything but a capitalist, she’s not pretending. I for one don’t take issue with that, I’m one.i live in a capitalist society,

for me, she comes across as relatable in the lyrics of her songs, she’s not parading naked, doing drugs, pissed up, objectifying her partners, shagging kids who are barely legal , rude to her fans, shagging rhe groupies, obnoxious to staff, lazy or amy other multitude of sins her male counterparts often stand guilty of. And some of the female ones.

good for her. And she seems to habe a sense of humour with it. I am not her demographic, but I do,like a few of her songs, and I’d defend any woman who achieves success, whatever that success looks like, rather than try to drag her down.

MamaAlwaysknowsbest · 12/02/2024 17:58

I do not know a single song of hers. But just like any other pop stars. Madonna, Michael Jackson. Popularity because people do not have what else to like in life or invest their energy in

I am a fan of classical music

And that's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinions on the aspects of her life she puts out into the public domain. I do hate the narrative though that any criticism of women is seen as unacceptable and dragging them down, eurgh.

fairydust11 · 12/02/2024 18:10

Op I completely agree. She seems very beige & bland and her music the same.
I genuinely don’t get it she has no edge to her music or personality.
Courtney Love & the likes she isn’t.
She seems like a nice person though.

You know one can be a fan of classical music and pop music.

angelikacpickles · 12/02/2024 18:34

She's a strong, successful, attractive woman who makes catchy pop songs. I'm not a huge fan but my DD is and I can see why.

Phonedown · 12/02/2024 19:13

Courtney Love and the likes she isn't

What does this mean?

Mumma2024 · 12/02/2024 19:16

I love her music and song writing, have done since 2007. I have tickets for eras in June. I still don't understand the supercool thing or general frenzy she causes by existing

Hoplolly · 12/02/2024 19:17

Jesus. Who would want Courtney Love as a role model. And she's hardly a music legend either.

I’d be with you if you presented a balanced view of positive and negatives, but you didn’t, far from it. You listed only negatives and as many as you could. And so yes your post falls into the “eurgh “ category of dragging women down. I couldn’t have titled the category better myself.

Phonedown · 12/02/2024 19:31

There's room at the table for women to make music of every genre. Go and support the artists you love. Talking Taylor Swift down will not raise the artists you love.

As a child I was obsessed with Kylie and Jason. As a young teen I was obsessed with grunge, Hole, Nirvana, Sound Garden. As an adult I listen to almost every genre. There is no need to denigrate any type of music or artist. Comparing Courtney Love to TS is weird. It feels like there is a narrative that only damaged people can have talent. Which is obviously nonsense.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/02/2024 19:33

@oldestboy - personally no- I will take Carole kings as below - but yep it is each to their own

Too Late - Carole king

Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'
And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no, no
(No, no, no, no)
It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy and I feel like a fool
And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no
There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you
But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no, no
It's too late, baby
It's too late now, darling
It's too late

She’s a disciplined and talented artist, a fabulous writer. Musically her songs are great: she has integrity.

I have no idea why she’s with Kelce. He seems horrible.

I know, I absolutely can't stand her. She is a deadbeat mother and a mess of a person.

In what way does he seem 'horrible'? I am very relieved that she is no longer with Matty Healy, that seemed like a severe error of judgement (although there is no way she would have settled with him and risked having Denise as a mother in law!)

Uricon2 · 12/02/2024 19:49

People like what they like and there are always going to be much more innately talented people who don't have enough grit (or sharp enough teeth and nails) to reach stardom.

Choosing people who did actually "make it", does (IMO) TS have the vocal ability of Ella Fitzgerald or the song writing talent of Kate Bush? No, but she is globally famous without them. It was ever thus. Elvis (who did have a great voice) would not have got so nearly so far without the lovely profile of his youth, or his hips, or the charisma.

That. Is. Popular. Music.

Hoplolly · 12/02/2024 20:00

I don't think she ever was with Matty Healy.

Mapletreelane · 12/02/2024 20:02

I think she's really relatable. She seems relatively normal, articulate, fairly intelligent, attractive has a lot of female albeit uberfamous friends. Her songs are catchy, her sense of style is not pornographic. She's not cutting edge, but she does seem to be herself and doesn't pretend to be something she's not. She.is also in control.of her destiny. She is more than the sum of her parts.

It's the girl next door appeal. Her fans can imagine themselves being her friend and hanging out.

TinySaltLick · 12/02/2024 20:06

Good grief some of the posts here - she is undeniably a truly talented songwriter and a great performer.

What else could you ask for as a pop artist?

Seems a great role model - hard working, a mostly relatable person who hasn't succumbed to the excesses associated with celebrity

mnlkjpo24 · 12/02/2024 20:09

I also don't get why she was particularly mentioned during Superbowl news coverage.

However, I rather like TS and she has been producing music for a long time. I've listened to her since I was a young girl and have always found most of her songs comforting/relatable.

I also like that she isn't naked in her music videos or public appearances like most female music artists these days (and some male 🤦🏼‍♀️).
