To ask what the appeal is for Taylor Swift?

Maybe it's just me, but I find her music really average and I don't think she's anything special.

The Chief's Super Bowl win seems overshadowed by her and I don't understand why. I watch a lot of sports and I don't recall a team's final win ever being mostly about one of the players' spouse/partner.

AIBU to just not understand the appeal?

Personally I don't get it, and that's not in a bitchy way but more of a I don't see the huge appeal way.

Yeah she has some catchy songs but to me she's no Beyoncé or Christina Aguilera who are like power houses!

I think Taylor comes across like a 25 year old but she's actually 33 or something like that? So it's almost like she needs to mature a little bit!

In what way is she immature? This comment makes no sense to me.

Beyonce and Christina were at the height of their fame 15-20 years ago. The world moves on, tastes change, a new generation of teenagers emerges.

oramges · 12/02/2024 09:22

@DirectionToPerfection maybe she looks young? And sings young songs, I dunno she just appears young to me it's just my opinion. Sorry!

Different people can have different opinions on the sane thing. Revolutionary thought, I know.

I've always find it so bizarre when people question why a particular singer or actor is popular.. isn't it obvious it's because people like them/enjoy their music/like them as actors.
What was the hype around the Beatles or Elvis Presley.. I personally found them to be mediocre but I can acknowledge their music wasn't to my taste but I can see why people like them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ps not a fan of Taylor swift ☺️

Guavafish1 · 12/02/2024 09:25

No sure. But I suppose she a plain Jane hero.
She has a big carbon footprint.

SingingSands · 12/02/2024 09:25

"Her music is mostly meh with some standout songs and 9 year old DD agrees with me."

😂 the authority of a 9 year old

What does a 9 year old know about music?

I agree with you and I think it smacks of envy and misogyny . So for example when AC/DC were huge folks weren’t running around giving it, oh they are so attention grabbing and the other such shit.

ElaineMBenes · 12/02/2024 09:27

I agree. There are regular threads like this yet we don't see the same number discussing Harry Styles or other male pop stars.

WaltzingWaters · 12/02/2024 09:28

I’m not really a TS fan and don’t understand the massive appeal either. But then again, I’m a huge Coldplay fan and they sure get a lot of hate, yet sell out arenas in seconds. So each to their own!

Crikeyalmighty · 12/02/2024 09:31

Formulaic average drivel - nursery rhymes for adults - terrible lyrics too . Ed Sheeran the same.

Passthepickle · 12/02/2024 09:31

Couldn’t be less my thing but she writes music, can sing, can dance and has a kind but not pushover vibe while looking flawless and leggy at all times. So beautiful, talented and hardworking with a strong friendship group and respect for her fans. I think I can see the appeal.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 12/02/2024 09:32

I think the UK press are making more of her at the Super Bowl because we don't have the same interest in the actual game.

beguilingeyes · 12/02/2024 09:32

I'm 62 and I like her very much. There's a lot more depth to her music than the hit singles. Listen to 'Ronan' or watch the video and I defy you to not be moved.

She's smart and talented, write all her own songs, and some for other people and the re-recording of her first six albums to get the rights back is a work of genius, IMO,

If you don't like her, that's your prerogative, but why do threads need to be started about it? I don't like Take That or the 1975 but that's fine.

the older i get, the more i admire women like this

Would i have been a fan as a teenager? Hell no. But as a middle aged woman, i can totally appreciate her talent for song writing and performing

Sorry that's not genius- it's as old as the hills - and I work in music - extremely average stuff but well produced and marketed - I actually preferred Britney!

That's what many 34 year old women are like these days

30 is the new 20 and all that

Im 45 going on 34

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 12/02/2024 09:09

Eeee, I know, pop stars these days aren't what they used to be. I don't understand what the young people see in them, honestly!

Not like the pop stars we used to have - when I was young, the pop stars sang proper songs, there was a proportionate response in the media to their fame, they were only exactly as famous as my assessment of their talent deemed them to deserve and things were ust generally BETTER. But now, for some reason, when I see a famous, young, beautiful, female pop star getting a lot of attention, I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

I remember a lot of songs by pop stars through the decades and many were not as proper or clean as people want to make them out to be.

I've always find it so bizarre when people question why a particular singer or actor is popular.. isn't it obvious it's because people like them/enjoy their music/like them as actors.

Agree, it reads as music snobbery to me.

Mumtime2 · 12/02/2024 09:39

I prefer Taylor Swift and her pop music on the radio compared to some other female pop stars.
Her dress style & make-up is bare able.
Miley Cyrus makes me cringe.
Perhaps the media can amp up the bs and coverage which I don't see since I don't subject myself to it.
Good on her I like one of her current songs.

dangerrabbit · 12/02/2024 09:41

My daughters are fans so I'm a bit bored by the majority of her music which plays constantly in this house tbh. But I appreciate how she has made all her money from music alone which shows the wide ranging appeal of her music and good business sense, she seems a positive, empowering figure and a good role model for young girls. And she has some bangers

Justfinking · 12/02/2024 09:45

Agree. I think Beyonce is overrated also.

BusySittingDown · 12/02/2024 09:49

I swear to God that there is one of these threads every other week!

People enjoy different things and have different tastes, shock horror!

I see a frenzy over TS over social media and in the media but I do not know a single Swifty, other than myself, IRL.

I think she's incredible. Catchy songs, great songwriter, very savvy businesswoman and I just find her so likeable.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/02/2024 09:51

But OP why do you need to 'get it'?
You don't like her music, ok - don't listen to it. Other people, who aren't you, do like it.
I'm 44, love TS - I think her lyrics are incredible. She writes her own songs, plays her own instruments & is a fantastic role model.
My DD is 9 & loves her too.

I don't like lots of other popular music artists; but I accept other people do & I dont try to come across as being superior because of it.

Perhaps you'd like to tell which musicians YOU think are amazing & worthy of your patronage??

Funnywonder · 12/02/2024 09:57

Always tread very carefully if you want to say anything negative about Taylor Swift. The fans swoop in out of nowhere. They are defensive. Angry. Quote lots of song lyrics at you. I've never seen anything quite like it in relation to any other pop star. I'm pretty sure most people don't like a lot of artists I like. But I don't care. Not even a little bit🤷🏻‍♀️

Crikeyalmighty · 12/02/2024 09:58

If I can just say about the 'writes all her own stuff' - she may indeed do so, but I'm very cynical after working in it for 20 odd years- I know several artists heavily marketed that way- and they don't- because I know the guy who writes for them

AdrianaLaCerva · 12/02/2024 09:58

I agree too. People just seem to love having a go at her. The lack of faux naive threads questioning the hype around the likes of Harry Styles is very striking. Now, why would people have a problem with the hype around TS but not HS…..it’s a puzzler 🙄

MilitantMommyBFArmy4Life · 12/02/2024 09:59

There are SO many other singers that you could question, as others say. Who aren't good role models and are genuinely talentless.

The criticism of Taylor is ridiculous. Some people are really angry at her and are now viciously attacking g her appearance (another reason to delete X, all round garbage)

She seems perfectly nice and has a few good songs.

Is she a pop legend? No. But how many singers these days are? Basically none of the mainstream singers can be put against musicians from the past.
