To ask what the appeal is for Taylor Swift?

lingo1234 · 12/02/2024 08:39

Maybe it's just me, but I find her music really average and I don't think she's anything special.

The Chief's Super Bowl win seems overshadowed by her and I don't understand why. I watch a lot of sports and I don't recall a team's final win ever being mostly about one of the players' spouse/partner.

AIBU to just not understand the appeal?

I have a young adult ds who is not into pop music and he can see why she is popular.

I'm sure people are being disingenuous when they say they haven't a clue why she is.

GingerIsBest · 13/02/2024 13:21

@TheTwirlyPoos I know, it always makes me laugh when people post that kind of thing. I'm completely indifferent to most sports, but I can totally understand WHY they are popular. Ditto, I couldn't give a flying monkey's about loads of bands, but I completely get why other people are excited at the opportunity to go to a concert or whatever.

Not being goady but interested to know if you have any examples of women who are fully feminist role models?

ASongOfRiceAndPeas · 14/02/2024 00:46

GingerIsBest · 13/02/2024 11:13

I don't get the "she can't be a feminist role model unless she is actively engaging and promoting every single facet of feminism". That's such bollocks. I am a feminist but 1. I simply can't engage with every feminist issue and 2. sometimes my feminism looks different to someone else's feminism.

This weird black/white thinking is why I think we have such huge issues with politics these days - for some reason there's this view that if you support a political party or a political leader that person must 100% have the same views as you on EVERYTHING. And it's just not practical. I married a man who I chose in part because we broadly have similar political, moral, ethical views... and we STILL don't agree on every single thing.

And the point is that of course TS isn't this perfect feminist, perfect role model, perfect artist etc. But overall she's pretty good and for some reason she takes a lot more heat than any man in a similar position.

No one said she has to subscribe to every facet of feminism. Hell, even I’m not any kind of active feminist (though I obviously have beliefs) but there are certain types of feminism that actively exclude and/or ignore women who don’t look like them.

haha, yes, that's true. But it's certainly not unique to TS. Spend 5 minutes on the feminism board here and you'll see the same. Ditto, the black mums netters board where feminists there are constantly frustrated by the issue.

No one is suggesting TS is the perfect feminist, but holding her to a higher standard than everyone else is ridiculous.

I consider myself a feminist. I'm interested in a whole bunch of things. But I'm not deluded - I think education for women in states that limit this is a huge problem. But I won't lie, I'm not spending a lot of time doing anything about it, researching it, talking to people about it. I sometimes feel bad about that because I really do think it's a huge issue and instead I'm spending my time agitating about inbuilt sexism and misogyny in middle class English schools. But at the end of the day, most of us are just doing the best we can in the world in which we live.

Phonedown · 14/02/2024 14:27

What does Taylor Swift do with her feminism that excludes people who do not look like her?

If you got a leg up to get into the industry you have to have a talent to keep it going. TS seems to be doing OK.

Then you have the Kardashians, no discernible talent but have worked at putting themselves out there and most of the world seems to have bought into it all, even in some cases where its evident its false. Eg Kylie global make up brand to make yourself look prettier yet she has sucked, plucked and pampered herself into an entirely different look from her youth. Likewise Kendall equally facially reorganised to become a top model without this neither if them would be where they are today. To be fair to them they have made the most of themselves and capitalised on it.

Personally speaking my vote would be with the talented Miss Taylor.

I absolutely can't stand the Kardashians! I would far far rather have Taylor, at least she does something instead of pout and preen all day long.

I can't even name one of her songs although they're played constantly on commercial radios. When the presenter says the next song is hers, I inevitably find it bland and insipid. No melody, no interesting lyrics...
When I asked one of my friends what she sees in her, she told me she fought very hard to get full control of her songs from unscrupulous record companies, and that she's a champion for women's rights in a very male dominated industry.
I totally respect that, who wouldn't, but that doesn't explain the enjoyment people get from listening to her music. Said friend wanted to go and see one of her concerts at the O2 but said she couldn't justify the £600 + cost of one ticket.

Yaddayaddayadda12345 · 13/02/2024 08:50

I stated she is a selective feminist but I didn't state she needed to become any other sort of feminist, at any point.
Someone asked me how she could become another sort of feminist, and I clarified that she didn't need to become any other sort of feminist, but that she really shouldn't be promoting herself as a feminist role model, because she isn't (she is a talented musician).
If anyone doesn't understand this then I am not sure how much simpler to make it.

This made me laugh. You have no idea what you mean by a ‘selective feminist’ do you?! No examples to support your assertion?! Your refusal to answer is hilarious. I am embarrassed for you!

I'm glad I grew up in the era of Madness.
Someone who has balls and stands up for people.
Seriously I'd be ashamed if one of my kids came along and said she was there idol
The point of being a teenager is pushing boundaries and well being a teenager. And they have Taylor and Ed Sheeran both boring as fuck with no personality

Treehuggingmutherfunkin · 25/02/2024 06:59

I do like her music, wouldn't go to a concert but if it comes on the radio I will sing along..

Is it necessary to idolise artists? Can't you just listen to stuff and enjoy it for what it is?

Plus, from the selection we have now, be grateful it's nice old Ed and Taylor because there are many worse people you're kid could look up to.

Not the "point of being a teenager at all"

Sd352 · 25/02/2024 09:16

The idea that Taylor Swift’s target audience is entirely teenagers is strange to me. I am exactly her age and having been in the States from ages 18-25, I have followed her career throughout. A lot of her current fans were not even born when she was already a top-selling artist. She is lyrically clever, writes her own songs and, most importantly, is an astute businesswoman. She can’t be all things to everyone but the appeal is not difficult to see if you try to look even a little bit.

catwithflowers · 25/02/2024 09:30

@StarvingMarvin222 "Seriously I'd be ashamed if one of my kids came along and said she was there idol"

That's a bit of an overreaction. I would be ashamed if my teen was cruel to an animal or stole an old lady's handbag. I wouldn't be ashamed of them loving Taylor Swift! 🫤

In the current environment of our teens being surrounded by awful influences and the toxicity of social media, it makes me relieved to have some positive influences.

Liking taylor swift inducing shame says more about you than the person liking TS

You can like Taylor Swift and still push boundaries in other ways that aren't music related. There are plenty of protests to join, religions to lose your mind to, dangerous hobbies to pursue, dodgy social media personalities to obsess over. I'm not a Taylor Swift fan myself, but maybe if I'd had girls instead of boys (her fans are overwhelmingly female) they might have rebelled against my preference for heavy metal/rock etc and loved her just to piss me off😆

She's not playing the O2 (capacity 20,000) she's playing eight or nine nights at Wembley Stadium (capacity 90,000) and they're all sold out. Tickets start at around £100 which is what you'll pay for standing in any of this years Hyde Park concerts..Kylie, Shania Twain etc.
If you don't like her fair enough, but why the disdain for those of us that do.

Hoplolly · 25/02/2024 16:02

I'm going to see her at Wembley @Cel77 Tickets cost £100 not £600.

Mumma2024 · 25/02/2024 16:03

Our tickets were also £100

No melody? I mean, you are perfectly entitled not to enjoy her songs, or to consider them bland and insipid, but they definitely have melodies!
